There is no better way to enhance your study experience than by spending time at another university abroad. Here at Monash University we encourage you to spend a semester at Monash University in Australia or at one of our partner universities in America, the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia or New Zealand. You will have a wonderful global experience, add value to your CV, and gain credit towards your Monash degree.

I have direct experience of the benefits this experience can bring. During my career I have worked with many students who have taken up the opportunity for study abroad. In fact, in 2016 my own daughter spent a year studying in Sweden. I can guarantee that an international study experience will give you new skills, new horizons and new aspirations. At times you will be moving out of your comfort zone and dealing with quite different perspectives. But don’t let that discourage you, because those more challenging times are exactly when the best cross-cultural learning occurs.

As a sign of our commitment to students’ global engagement, we are offering the Monash Abroad Travel Scholarship of RM 8,000 to students participating in international exchange to our partner universities. As an exchange student, you will pay your regular fee to Monash University Malaysia; no additional fees are paid to the host university.

Let’s make international exchange a distinctive feature of the Monash University Malaysia student experience! Kuala Lumpur is a global hub for business, education and tourism. I am committed to embedding that cosmopolitan spirit in our world class education programs.

Monash University is one of the world’s most international universities. As you pursue your degree here, don’t forget to take up one of our global opportunities. I'm very confident that you won’t regret it.

33 What our students say

"Studying abroad is like a dream come true. I got to see the world, travel and meet people who shared different disciplines and beliefs. Not only did the experience boost my self-confidence, it also reminded me of the importance of stepping out of my comfort zone. I’m so grateful to Monash for giving me this opportunity."

CHEW SAU JUN Exchange student to University of Auckland

“My experience overseas taught me a lot and widened my perspective. By living abroad, far from your comfort zone and your parents, you will learn to make quick decisions and be independent and self- reliant. How you manage your time is also important. If you have the chance to go on an exchange, you should take it!”

FERDY JULIUS PERRY PHE (far left) Exchange student to Monash Australia and Technical University of Denmark

“This experience has not only challenged my outlook, but broadened it too. I was homesick and suffered from culture shock but I learnt to overcome it. Being surrounded by many other international students, I’ve also become more adept at cross-cultural communication. I thank both Monash Abroad and Fudan from the bottom of my heart for this precious opportunity.“

THIEN KAH FOH (back row, second from right) Exchange student to Fudan University

34 “My experience at Groningen was beyond amazing. I met many of my closest friends who were from Italy, Switzerland, Taiwan and other countries. I’ve travelled to different states in the Netherlands, UK, Germany, Austria and Dublin with my fellow exchange students and it was not about traveling to as many countries as I could, but rather the meaningful bonds that I was able to build.”

TIONG CHER MINN (front right) Exchange student to Fudan University

“As a young leader, having my ideas tested and challenged at one of the world's most prestigious universities was an invaluable learning experience . If I had the chance to do it all again, even if I had to go through the fear and anxiety of leaving my home once more, I will take it anytime.”

ENRICO LOWIRA Exchange student to King’s College London

“This was truly and unquestionably a life-changing experience. I had independence and freedom; I was thrown out of my comfort zone; I enjoyed the challenges (though they caused anxiety and stress most of the time); I enjoyed adventures and venturing into the unknown; I learnt to deal with my fears; and most of all, I got to learn more about myself.”

LIM TIEN CHIA Exchange student to Korea University

35 "My exchange to Monash Australia was the best semester of my entire student life. It's not everyday that you'd get an opportunity to go to ‘the most livable city in the world’ to study at one of the best universities in Australia. To anyone considering the exchange, I urge you to go for it while you can or you will regret it."

RYAN POH Exchange student to Monash University Australia

"Being abroad lets you immerse yourself fully in a place with culture differences, and re-evaluate different ideologies you've had about the host country, learning environment and people from all walks of life. If you have an opportunity to go abroad for an exchange semester, my advice would be to go forth and take the leap of faith!"

TEE HSIN YEE Exchange student to University of Sussex

"I am ever grateful for my parents' encouragement to go on this exchange. I made many friends from countries like Belgium, Germany, Indonesia, Taiwan, UK and the US. Given the privilege to travel, I ventured into many regions including Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Belgium, Germany, France and Iceland.”

KATHERINE (KHAW) ZE YUN Exchange student to Warwick University

36 "I had so much fun when I was in the UK. I am so glad to have met many fun, kind, and thoughtful new friends; traveled to amazing places; learned in a different ambiance; and last but not least, actually applied for the exchange program in the first place. Life surely begins at the end of your comfort zone, so go on exchange and travel the world."

MARIA SARITA WINDYASTUTI (right) Exchange student to University of Leeds

"My exchange has certainly made an impact on my life as I’ve learned to be more independent, to come out of my comfort zone, to socialize with different people from different cultures and to be appreciative of the many blessings I have. I truly recommend future students to consider going on exchange through Monash Abroad; with the right mind-set, you will have the best time of your life!"

ENG WEN KYE Exchange student to University of Warwick

"I’ve learnt so much about the culture in Europe and of course, myself. This experience opened my mind to the endless possibilities out there waiting for me to explore. My word of advice to students considering an exchange would be to grab the opportunity at hand and go for it!"

ESTHER YONG Exchange student to Bocconi University
