Queen Mab, VIII N HIS FRAGMENTARY essay "OnLove," composed during the summer of1818, I Shelley writes, "[I]fwe imagine, we would that the airy children ofour brain were born anew within another's."! When he begins work on Prometheus Unbound the following September, Shelley will develop various strategies that urge the reader of his lyrical drama to become that sympathetic "co-author" he yearns for in the earlier piece. His essay "On Love" rather plaintively suggests the heightened level of engagement with his poetry that Prometheus Unbound in fact demands ofthose ofus who enter his mental theater. And it is in the play's exuberantfinale that Shelley mostpowerfully implicates his reader, a reader who must now replace the liberated Prometheus at center stage. As Stephen C. Behrendt has recently demonstrated, Shelley's ardent desire for a responsive audience was matched by his genius for manipulating audience response. Genre, as well as style and rhetoric, provided the poet with powerful tools for attracting and then guiding particular audiences, from "a general, 'popular' audience" to the "SUNETOI, the 'ideal' readers for whomPrometheus Unbound and Epipsychidion were intended."2 In one of the few detailed explications ofthe lyrical drama's fourth act, Joanna E. Behrendt's valuable study emphasizes Shelley's acute awareness and skillful manipulation of his various (real or imagined) audiences. Without singling out Act IV for special attention, several recent commentators on Prometheus Unbound have focussed on the role ofits reader. Tilottama Rajan's sophisticated and timely "Deconstruction or Reconstruction: Reading Shelley's Prometheus Unbound," Studies in Romanticism, 23 (1984), 317-38, looks closely at certain textual "gaps" which we as readers are required to fill in as we help "produce" the meaning of the play. Alan Richardson's discussion of Prometheus Unbound inA Mental Theater: Poetic Drama and Consciousness in the Romantic Age (University Park and London: Pennsylvania State Univ. Press, 1988), 124-53, illuminates the function of the sympathetic imagination-that of both the play's characters and readers-and emphasizes the play's enactment and encouragement of "the relaxation of psychic borders" (145). '''3 Her commentreminds us how prominent and yethow neglected the question ofgenre remains in discussions ofthis act. When we confront rather than simply invoke this question, it becomes clear that Shelley, in modeling Act IV ofPrometheus Unbound on the Renaissance masque, exploits what is perhaps the most salient characteristic ofthis genre: its intermingling of spectators and performers. The masque that concludes the play pronlpts us not only to witness but also to participate in the joyous reunion of regenerated humanity and nature that comprises the drama's "involving and involved" finale (IV. 240). In its most celebrated incarnation, the courtly masque of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, this form of the drama emerged as a stylized, decorous social ritual in which play and audience interpenetrated, existed symbiotically, as it were. In the masques of Daniel, Jonson, and Campion, for example, the aristocratic audience not only joined the nlasquers in the final dance, the revels, but courtiers and even such royal personages as James's Queen Anne and their sons Henry and Charles played roles which the court poet wrote especially for them. While in the Jonsonian masque, created for the Jacobean court, the blurred boundary between audience-particularly the royal spectator(s)-andperform­ ers served to reinforce and idealize the aristocracy's authority,4 Shelley employs the masque in orderto involve his reader directly in a radically democratic vision ofhumanunity and cosmic harmony.5 Central to the play's fourth act are Panthea and lone, upgraded from subordinate, sometimes confused observers to crucial narrators and participants. Within the elaborate masque that concludes the play, these sisters correspond not only to the chorus figures ofAeschylus' Prometheus Bound, but to graceful masquers who invite us to enter the dance and "weave the mystic measure" in a world where man has beconle "Equal, unclassed, tribeless and nationless" and where a cast of liberated spirits, heavenly bodies, and responsive readers supplant the opulent trappings and royal revellers of the Jonsonian masque (IV. 77; III. iv. 195). Yet unlike the stark and "ghastly masquerade" of The Mask ofAnarchy, completed shortly before Shelley composed the fourth act of Prometheus 3. Bergeron, ed., Pageantry in the Shakespearian Theater (Athens: Univ. ofGeorgiaPress, 1985), examine not only Jonson's work but also the masques and pageants of his contemporaries and explore the masque as it functions within plays, especially those ofShakespeare. Enid Welsford's The Court Masque (New York: Russell & Russell, 1962) provides a comprehensive history of the masque from its beginnings in medieval seasonal festivals. 5. A Mask, published in 1816. In The Transcendental Masque: An Essay on Milton's Comus (Ithaca: Cornell Univ. Press, 1971), Angus Fletcher emphasizes Milton's "characteristic ambivalence toward the mystification of political authority," a mystification in which the Jonsonian masque specialized: "There is much less sense of regal or princely power in Comus than in any masque of comparable stature, and this is the result of a nascent Miltonic libertarianism, which will not permit the act, the process, the dramaturgy of masking to assimilate all individual differences into the oneness of the princely person" (18). https://digitalcommons.colby.edu/cq/vol30/iss2/3 2 Chichester: Entering the Stream of Sound: The Reader and the Masque in Shelle TEDDI LYNN CHICHESTER 87 Unbound,6 the masque in Act IV does not appropriate in order to invert a primarily aristocratic genre by casting it in "the low style" and thus-in the words of Stuart Curran-"accommodating [Shelley's] vision to the mass audi­ ence he wanted to reach."? As Shelley realized, Prometheus Unbound could never have the popular appeal of the propagandistic "Song to the Men of England" or The Mask ofAnarchy;8 and he wrote to Leigh Hunt not long after the drama's completion that it "will not sell-it is written only for the elect."g Although Shelley's "elect" is presumably superior in terms ofintellect, aesthet­ ics, and spiritual depth rather than economic and social privilege, his use of the masque parallels that of Jonson and other Renaissance court poets in that both Shelley and his precursors present "beautiful idealisms" to an elite audience, who in tum become, if only temporarily, the ideal beings they observe and intermingle with in the masque (Preface to Prometheus Unbound, p. 135).10 However, neither Jonson nor Shelley simply caters to or flatters his readers / audience, but compels them to strive for the "moral excellence" which Shelley emphasizes in his Preface to the play and which Jonson's allegorical figures represent. Stuart Curran's remark that Shelley hoped to "reach" a wide audience with The Mask ofAnarchy is suggestive, for in creating the cosmic masque of Prometheus Unbound, Shelley instead forces his reader to reach upwards to discern its "awakening tones" (IV. 190). Unlike the closed circle for whom Jonson wrote his masques, Shelley's notion ofan "elect" is a more fluid one. By empathically entering the "Chorus Hymeneal" in ActIV, 11 the responsive reader, having "lived into" the first three acts as well, can join a unique aristocracy-of the regenerated human consciousness and imagination-andthus half-create the 6.

Shelley’s Poem Ozymandias in Russian Translations Dmitry Nikolayevich Zhatkin †*and Anna Anatolyevna RyabovaÌ Abstract The article presents a comparative analysis of Russian translations of P.B.Shelley’s poem Ozymandias (1817), carried out by Ch. Vetrinsky, A.P. Barykova, K.D. Balmont, N. Minsky, V.Ya. Bryusov in 1890 – 1916. These translations fully reflect the peculiarities of the social and political, cultural and literary life in Russia of the late 19th – early 20th Centuries, namely weakening of the political system, growing of interest to the culture of Ancient Egypt, and strengthening of Neoromanticism in opposition to Naturalism in literature. In the process of the analysis, we used H. Smith’s sonnet Ozymandias, P.B. Shelley’s sonnet Ozymandias and its five Russian translations. The methods of historical poetics of A.N. Veselovsky, V.M.     Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792 – 1822) Biography: ercy Bysshe Shelley, (born Aug. 4, 1792, Field Place, near Horsham, Sussex, Eng.— died July 8, 1822, at sea off Livorno, Tuscany [Italy]), English Romantic poet whose P passionate search for personal love and social justice was gradually channeled from overt actions into poems that rank with the greatest in the English language. Shelley was the heir to rich estates acquired by his grandfather, Bysshe (pronounced “Bish”) Shelley. Timothy Shelley, the poet’s father, was a weak, conventional man who was caught between an overbearing father and a rebellious son. The young Shelley was educated at Syon House Academy (1802–04) and then at Eton (1804–10), where he resisted physical and mental bullying by indulging in imaginative escapism and literary pranks. Between the spring of 1810 and that of 1811, he published two Gothic novels and two volumes of juvenile verse. In the fall of 1810 Shelley entered University College, Oxford, where he enlisted his fellow student Thomas Jefferson Hogg as a disciple. But in March 1811, University College expelled both Shelley and Hogg for refusing to admit Shelley’s authorship of The Necessity of Atheism. Sir Walter Scott knew this perfectly well, and he wrote about it, very wittily, in 'A PostScript Which Should Have Been a Preface', the last chapter of his novel Waverley written in 1814: 'most novel readers, as my own conscience reminds me, are apt to be guilty of the sin of omission respecting the same matter of prefaces' .1 Scott refers to novel readers but poetry readers are also 'guilty of the sin of omission', maybe even more so in so far as they may wish, understandably enough, to read only poetry and not a prose introduction.     Moriah Speciale Early and First Editions of Percy Bysshe Shelley’s Works Percy Bysshe Shelley was one of the major Romantic Poets who wrote with strong social and political convictions. While he did not rise to popularity during his lifetime, his wife and editor, Mary Shelley, made sure that he would leave behind an expansive repertoire in print. The items I presented on were two early and first editions of Shelley’s poems, Queen Mab and The Masque of Anarchy, which can both be found in the 19th Century Collection of Baylor’s Armstrong Browning Library. Shelley drew much of his inspiration from the political upheavals of his day, and I chose to focus most of my presentation on the history behind his famous work, The Masque of Anarchy. Shelley wrote this political poem in 1819, while he was living in Italy after having been pushed out of England due to family and relationship drama. The poem is written in response to the infamous Peterloo Massacre, which took place in August of 1819. The massacre was the first event to merit large scale journalism across Britain and Europe, which is how Shelley was able to learn of it so quickly even though he was away in Italy. The massacre took place just after the Napoleonic wars, during a time of paranoia and some terror. After the Napoleonic wars, large majorities of people were not well due to famine and unemployment and by the time 1819 rolled around pressures and tensions were rising due to the poor economic climate. In addition, the English government instated “Corn Laws” which were tariffs on foreign grain meant to protect English grain farmers.

All tellers of tales know the lure of the marvelous. The shadow of terror and the sense of wonder lurk in folk tales and ballads, in myths, and in legends. The myth makers of civilization's infancy, the story tellers of olden times, the court minstrels, singing of heroic exploits, the old housewives in chimney corners, telling their tales of fairies, ghosts, and goblins, have all made use of the strange, the terrible, and the wonderful. Shelley, as befitted any boy gifted with a lively curiosity and a vivid imagination, was interested in the wonderful, the mysterious, and the strange. He loved to relate wonder tales to his little sisters; and he invented a fabulous tortoise inhabiting Warnham Pond, an equally fabulous snake of great age, and an old alchemist, who lived in the attic of Field Place. These flights of his versatile imagination excited the children and filled their minds with a pleasurable dread.

To elucidate Shelley‘s concept of sensibility which links his poetry to its ethical and aesthetic concerns, I combine close textual readings of Shelley‘s imagery of the senses with his intellectual and cultural inheritance from the ‗Age of Sensibility‘ which encompasses ‗moral philosophy‘ (ethics and aesthetics) and ‗natural philosophy‘ (science). Chapter I focuses on Shelley‘s notions of sensuous pleasure and sympathy.
