In response to the jew's action of striking him while shouting, 'Walk faster!', Christ replied, 'I go, but you will walk until I come again!' (Anderson, Legend: 11). By way of this curse, Christ figuratively transferred his burdensome cross to the jew. 2. As Hyam Maccoby explains, 'One of the strongest beliefs of medieval Christians was that the Second Coming of Christ could not take place until the Jews were con verted to Christianity. (Marvell's "till the conversion of the jews" means simply "till the millennium".) The Jews, therefore, had to be preserved; otherwise the Second Coming could not take place' (239). According to Michael Ragussis, British conversionist societies justified their activities by claiming to 'aid in this divine plan, and with a kind of reverse logic their establishment was viewed as a sign of the proximity of the Second Coming' (Figures: 5). 3. Roger of Wendover's Flores historiarwn and Matthew Paris's Chrmzica majora from . the early thirteenth century provide all of the details of the legend, but the transgressor in their versions is Pilate's doorkeeper, a Roman named Cartaphilus, and not a Jew (Anderson, Legend 16-21). \Vhile in certain Italian versions of this tale the accursed wanderer is a Jew (19), he is not described as Jewish in the British legend until the early seventeenth century. Shelley's Hellas and the Mask of Anarchy Are Thematically, Linguistically
63 Percy Bysshe Shelley, the Newspapers of 1819 and the Language of Poetry Catherine Boyle This essay rediscovers the link between the expatriate newspaper Gali- gnani’s Messenger and Shelley’s 1819 political poetry, particularly The Mask of Anarchy and Song, To the Men of England. It is suggested that a reading of this newspaper helps us to understand Shelley’s response to the counter-revolutionary press of his day; previous accounts have tended to solely stress Shelley’s allegiance to Leigh Hunt’s politics. As well as being a contribution to book history, this essay highlights the future of the nine - teenth-century book by exploring the ways the ongoing digitization of nine - teenth-century texts can enable new readings of familiar texts. It also covers some theoretical issues raised by these readings, namely the development of the Digital Humanities and intertextual theory. I must trespass upon the forgiveness of my readers for the display of newspaper erudition to which I have been reduced. Percy Bysshe Shelley, Preface to Hellas, 1821 1 helley’s Hellas and The Mask of Anarchy are thematically, linguistically, and compositionally related , and these resemblances can lead into a close S reading of Shelley’s 1819 political poetry. Both feature revolutions: an actual Greek revolution that had already occurred, and the putative revolution after the events of the Peterloo Massacre in 1819. Both mythologize historical events. In Hellas , the figure of the Jew Ahasuerus, doomed to wander the earth eternally, appears amidst an account of historical events. In The Mask of Anarchy Shelley inserts an apocalyptic, ungendered Shape which enacts the downfall of Anarchy. -

Beyond ‘Monk’ Lewis Samuel James Simpson MA By Research University of York English and Related Literature January 2017 Abstract “What do you think of my having written in the space of ten weeks a Romance of between three and four hundred pages Octavo?”, asks Matthew Gregory Lewis to his mother.1 Contrary to the evidence—previous letters to his mother suggest the romance was a more thoughtful and time-consuming piece—Lewis was the first to feed a myth that would follow him for the rest of his life and beyond, implying he hurriedly cobbled together The Monk (1796) and that it was the product of an impulsive, immature and crude mind to be known soon after as, ‘Monk’ Lewis. The novel would stigmatise his name: he was famously criticised by Coleridge for his blasphemy, Thomas J Mathias described The Monk as a disease, calling for its censure, and The Monthly Review, for example, insisted the novel was “unfit for general circulation”.2 All these readings distract us from the intellectual and philosophic exploration of The Monk and, as Rachael Pearson observes, “overshadow…the rest of his writing career”.3 This thesis is concerned with looking beyond this idea of ‘Monk’ Lewis in three different ways which will comprise the three chapters of this thesis. The first chapter engages with The Monk’s more intellectual, philosophic borrowings of French Libertinism and how it relates to the 1790s period in which he was writing. The second chapter looks at Lewis’s dramas after The Monk and how Lewis antagonised the feared proximities of foreign influence and traditional British theatre. -
Early Nineteenth-Century British Drama and the Greek War of Independence
Staging Transcultural Relations: Early Nineteenth-Century British Drama and the Greek War of Independence Alexander Grammatikos, Langara College Abstract Keywords This paper examines two British Romantic dramas written Nineteenth-Century British during the Greek War of Independence and its aftermath: George Drama; Greek War of Burges’s The Son of Erin or the Cause of the Greeks (1823) Independence; British Romantic and John Baldwin Buckstone’s The Maid of Athens; or, the Re- Hellenism; Philhellenism; Lord volt of the Greeks (1829). The paper discusses the plays’ portray- Byron als of transcultural interactions between Greeks and Europeans (Irish and British) and argues that the two dramas encourage audiences to see similarities between themselves and Greeks, while also critiquing British apathy toward the Greeks’ efforts to achieve liberation. Despite Burges’s and Buckstone’s shared support for the Greek war, however, an important difference between the two texts exists: while The Son of Erin maintains a relentless attack on the British government for aligning British politics with Ot- toman policies and remaining indifferent toward the Greek war, The Maid of Athens suggests that Britons who take advantage of Greeks’ subjugation misrepresent Britain’s true feelings about the Greek War of Independence. Discuss ___________________________________________________________________________ Rupert Swallow — February 2018 Word Count: 2950 Rupert Swallow 2 Shelley’s poetry contains a complex interplay, or ‘artful mastery’, of form, in several of the many senses of the word. This interplay conveys both the strength of human emotion — the ‘cry of his heart’ — and its inexpressible nature through language — its ability only to ‘seem’. Shelley uses form to express emotion directly and eloquently, if equivocally. His ability to do so rests on the recognisably Structuralist conception of poetry he espouses in A Defence of Poetry (henceforth Defence). Poetry is ‘the expression of the Imagination’1 which is defined as the mind acting upon subjects ‘so as to colour them with its own light’ (Defence, p.856).2 Moreover, poetry’s transformative power makes it a singularly apt tool for political protest, since its ability to defamiliarise its subject matter and so ‘[turn] all things to loveliness’ (Defence, p.866) implicitly questions the reader’s assumptions about societal status quos. Andersen, Karen Blixen and Beyond Kirstine Marie Kastbjerg Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor in Danish Studies Marianne Stecher Department of Scandinavian Studies Despite growing ubiquitous in both the popular and academic mind in recent years, the Gothic has, perhaps not surprisingly, yet to be examined within the notoriously realism-prone literary canon of Denmark. This dissertation fills that void by demonstrating an ongoing negotiation of Gothic conventions in select works by canonical Danish writers such as B.S. Ingemann, Hans Christian Andersen, and Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen), as well as contemporary writers such as Peter Høeg and Leonora Christina Skov. This examination does not only broaden our understanding of these culturally significant writers and the discourses they write within and against, it also adds to our understanding of the Gothic – an infamously malleable and indefinable literary mode – by redirecting attention to a central feature of the Gothic that has not received much critical attention: the emphasis on excess, spectacle, clichéd conventions, histrionic performances, its hyperbolic rhetorical style, and hyper-visual theatricality. -

So doomed he was to wonder as a symbol to the world of the Second Coming--or as a symbol of the repentant sinner, or the unrepentant heretic. He was called The Wandering Jew. His name was supposedly Ahaseurus or Malchus or Cartaphilus. The below is an extract from "The Legend of the Wandering Jew" by Joseph Gaer (Menton Book, 1961). The first written account of the Legend of the Wandering Jew was chronicled at the great monastery of St. Albans, an English abbey famous for its historians. In 1228, a number of bishops and other church dignitaries gathered at the Abbey of St. Albans to authenticate additions to its collection of relics and to discuss, among other church problems, the then highly controversial topic of the widespread traffic in relics. -

There is something so wonderful about her - she is so resolute and determined. He gives her a potion to administer to Henriquez, which will make the first woman he sees when he awakens appear as the woman of his dreams.
