As I give references in the main text and appendix to lines but not to volumes from Poems, the following list gives the volume that poems referenced appeared in: Queen Mab in volume one; Laon and Cythna (The Revolt of Islam), Prometheus Unbound, Rosalind and Helen, Athanase, and Julian and Maddalo in volume two; Mask, ‘Song: To the Men of England’, ‘Liberty’, ‘The Sensitive-Plant’, and ‘To a Sky-Lark’ in volume three. At the time of writing, the edition’s fourth volume of a projected five has lately been published; I have been unable to consult this volume for Epipsychidion or Adonais. Hellas, given the edition’s editorial principle of arranging poems in chronological order of composition, would presumably appear in the as yet unpublished fifth volume. My source for those three poems and Shelley’s essay A Defence of Poetry, therefore, was Norton. I consulted CP for the publication history of editions of Shelley’s poetry, and for textual variants, since that edition offers more detail than Poems. Similarly, however, CP has yet to be published in its entirety, which meant that I could not consult it for the poems Shelley composed in 1819: Mask and ‘Song: To the Men of England’. My source for the publication history of those poems was Poems. viii Abstract This thesis examines the nature of the relationship between Shelley and the thought, politics, and discursive practices of Owenism and Chartism. Its objects of analysis are Owenite periodicals and Chartist newspapers, which I theorise as active in the process of transmission and reception. This thesis locates the reception and transmission of Shelley’s poetry and politics within the broader context of the movements’ political and social commitments. It makes an original contribution to knowledge by demonstrating that the movements used Shelley’s poetry critically and with discrimination. It also argues that Owenite and Chartist approaches to Shelley changed as the movements developed over time in response to historical pressures. I argue that a cultural materialist approach enables us to reconsider the nature of Shelley’s influence and popularity within these movements, something that has become a critical commonplace. It also allows us to distinguish between Owenite and Chartist ‘Shelleys’. I argue that the Owenite periodicals the Crisis and the New Moral World produced a qualitatively different Shelley from the one that emerged in Chartist newspapers such as the Northern Star.

He had a significant influence on a diverse range of poets and writers. Biography Early life John Keats was born in Moorgate, London, on 31 October 1795, to Thomas and Frances Jennings Keats. There is no clear evidence of his exact birthplace.[3] Although Keats and his family seem to have marked his birthday on 29 October, baptism records give the date as the 31st.[4] He was the eldest of four surviving children; his younger siblings were George (1797–1841), Thomas (1799–1818), and Frances Mary "Fanny" (1803–1889) who eventually married Spanish author Valentín Llanos Gutiérrez.[5] Another son was lost in infancy.

No doubt, literature makes us think meticulously and question ourselves: do we believe that our visions about peaceful world are meaningless and irrelevant? Or should we let the world do what it's going to do? Is it justifiable to give everything in the hands of leaders who don't care in the least about preserving us or our world, leaders whom we don't trust and over whom we have no control? Should we accept that violence and war are inevitable? Or should we take up the noble endeavour to talk to common people, to sing and to write songs for the common people about peace? In the present paper, my humble endeavour is to underscore the power of the lyrics which prepare us to understand the deep connections between non-violence and peace. Exploring the relationship between aesthetics and politics in P.B. Shelley‘s lyric The Masque of Anarchy, the paper attempts to underline the power of poetry which can bring revolution of opinions.     Gísli Súrsson: A Drama and the Woman Question Auksė Beatričė Katarskytė Master's Thesis in Viking and Medieval Norse Studies MAS4091, 30 ECTS Department of Linguistics and Scandinavian Studies (ILN) Faculty of Humanities University of Oslo Spring 2020 Summary Gísli Súrsson: A Drama is a play by the late-Victorian author Beatrice Helen Barmby. This largely overlooked adaptation of the Old Norse Gísla saga Súrssonar is representative of the nineteenth-century British appreciation of the medieval North. In the thesis, the play is analysed in the light of the late Victorian debate of women’s rights. The main aims of this thesis are to reintroduce Beatrice Helen Barmby’s authorship and interpret the saga heroines of Gísli Súrsson: A Drama as potential conduits of progressive feminist ideas in Victorian Britain. The analysis is inspired by the new historicist method of approaching literary works through the study of the author’s background alongside contemporary social, cultural, and historical realities. The thesis consists of two major parts: the first part introduces Beatrice Helen Barmby’s biographical and literary background, her politically active family and the subtleties of the Woman Question of the late nineteenth-century Britain; the second part is an analysis of the play’s main female characters Aud and Ásgerd and the standpoints of women’s rights debate from which those characters can be interpreted, namely division of gender roles and marriage. The results of this thesis show that Gísli Súrsson: A Drama is infused with the consciousness of the women’s rights debate and that it favours the reformist side of the debate, where increased opportunities and respect for women are advocated for, but separate gender roles are maintained.

Eastern European joke from the Communist era1 The word socialism is modern, but the impulse behind it is ancient. The idea of holding property in common goes back to Ancient Greece and is found in the Bible.2 It has been harboured by some religions and it has been the call of radicals for centuries. In his 1516 book Utopia, Sir Thomas More imagined a system where everything was held in common ownership and internal trade was abolished. Unlike most other proposals for common ownership before the 1840s, More’s Utopia envisioned cities of between 60 000 and 100 000 adults. It is the first known proposal for what I call big socialism. Before the rise of Marxism, the predominant vision of common ownership was small-scale, rural and agricultural. It was often motivated by religious doctrine. In Germany in the 1520s the radical Protestant Thomas Müntzer proposed a Christian communism. From 1649 to 1650, during the English Civil War, the Diggers set up religious communes whose members worked together on the soil and shared its produce. There are other examples of socialism before the word was coined.3 This chapter is about the origins, meaning and evolution of the words socialism and communism. They are virtual synonyms, both largely referring to common ownership of the means of production and to the abolition of private property.

Vol. 1: Text Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of English Language and Literature Clive Simmonds May 2013 1 Abstract This thesis examines the publishing history of Algernon Charles Swinburne during his lifetime (1837-1909). The first chapter presents a detailed narrative from his first book in 1860 to the mid 1870s: it includes the scandal of Poems and Ballads in 1866; his subsequent relations with the somewhat dubious John Camden Hotten; and then his search to find another publisher who was to be Andrew Chatto, with whom Swinburne published for the rest of his life. It is followed by a chapter which looks at the tidal wave of criticism generated by Poems and Ballads but which continued long after, and shows how Swinburne responded. The third and central chapter turns to consider the periodical press, important throughout his career not just for reviewing but also as a very significant medium for publishing poetry. Chapter 4 on marketing looks closely at the business of producing and of selling Swinburne’s output. Finally Chapter 5 deals with some aspects of his career after the move to Putney, and shows that while Theodore Watts, his friend and in effect his agent, was making conscious efforts to reshape the poet, some of Swinburne’s interests were moving with the tide of public taste; how this was demonstrated in particular by his volume of Selections and how his poetic oeuvre was finally consolidated in the Collected Edition at the end of his life.

    Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792 – 1822) Biography: ercy Bysshe Shelley, (born Aug. 4, 1792, Field Place, near Horsham, Sussex, Eng.— died July 8, 1822, at sea off Livorno, Tuscany [Italy]), English Romantic poet whose P passionate search for personal love and social justice was gradually channeled from overt actions into poems that rank with the greatest in the English language. Shelley was the heir to rich estates acquired by his grandfather, Bysshe (pronounced “Bish”) Shelley. Timothy Shelley, the poet’s father, was a weak, conventional man who was caught between an overbearing father and a rebellious son. The young Shelley was educated at Syon House Academy (1802–04) and then at Eton (1804–10), where he resisted physical and mental bullying by indulging in imaginative escapism and literary pranks. Between the spring of 1810 and that of 1811, he published two Gothic novels and two volumes of juvenile verse. In the fall of 1810 Shelley entered University College, Oxford, where he enlisted his fellow student Thomas Jefferson Hogg as a disciple. But in March 1811, University College expelled both Shelley and Hogg for refusing to admit Shelley’s authorship of The Necessity of Atheism.
