WHAT IS A SPIRITUAL BOUQUET? Spiritual Bouquets are prayers or devotional acts that someone (the giver) has or will offer for someone else (the recipient). It can be given from an individual or group to an individual or group to express joy, sorrow or best wishes, often in commemoration of a special occasion. In the old days, there actually used to be greeting cards with something like “a spiritual bouquet for you” on the front. Inside, there would be something like a check-off list and you would write down the number of how many rosaries, individual prayers, masses or whatever you would be offering for the person. So, this would be a ‘bouquet of prayers’ rather than a ‘bouquet of flowers’. What does Spiritual Bouquet mean? A spiritual bouquet is a collection of prayers and spiritual actions given up for a specific purpose. Pick up your Spiritual Bouquet from a box in back of the church. These cards are free.

ST. JOSAPHAT KOTSYLOVSKY FEAST DAY: NOVEMBER 12 The who live in the Bieszczady and Beskid Niski Mountains are among the ethnic groups that stayed loyal to the Union of Brest that created the Greek Catholic Church. Josaphat was born on March 3, 1876 in a Lemko village of Pakoszowka near . He wanted to be a priest, so he entered the seminary where his talents were appreciated. He was sent to study in . He graduated in 1907 and was ordained that same year. He returned to his homeland, Galicia in western Ukraine, and worked in a seminary in Stanislaviv as deputy rector and lecturer of homiletics. It seems this work did not satisfy him, because in October 1911 he entered Basilian novitiate. But he did not enjoy the peaceful monastic life for long. He was ordained Eastern rite Catholic Bishop of Przemysl on September 23, 1917. There, he experienced the difficult period of emergence of the eastern border of and of Ukrainian identity. He enjoyed great authority in the Polish Episcopate as a theologian and minister, and co-founded the Catholic Action. After the border between Poland and Ukraine was determined, Kotsylovsky was arrested on September 20, 1945 by the Polish security service. He was accused of obstructing expatriation of the Ukrainian population to the and had to choose between conversion to Russian Orthodoxy or exile to Siberia. When he refused to renounce the Catholic Faith, he was released for a short period. At that time, the Greek Catholic church synod in recognized, under the security service pressure, the supremacy of the Moscow Patriarchate. Kotsylovsky remained the only Eastern rite Catholic bishop. He was arrested again on June 26, 1946 and transferred to Kiev. He died in the Kiev prison on September 17, 1947. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on June 27, 2001 during his visit to the Ukraine.

HAPPY 70TH BIRTHDAY FR. JACOB-MATTHEW SMITH!
