Mission Society of the Mother of God of Boronyavo the Byzantine
Mission Society of the Mother of God of Boronyavo Christmas 2014 The Byzantine Catholic Church in Ukraine Twenty Five Years! This Eparchy of Mukachevo* celebrated the 25th anniversary of its deliverance from the catacombs with services across the Transcarpathian Oblast. The main event was held on June 6 at the seminary outside Uzhhorod, with the relics of Blessed Theodore Romzha brought down from the cathedral. The Holy Father appointed Cardinal Jozef Tomko, former Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, as his Special Envoy to attend the celebrations and also sent the Apostolic Nuncio to Ukraine, Archbishop Thomas Gullickson. Cardinal Tomko delivered a stirring homily entitled “God gave us freedom, that we use it well,” recounting the hero- ism of young Bishop Romzha, only 33 years old and cut off from the rest of the world by the new Soviet border. Then he went on to challenge the vast crowd to use long hoped-for freedom accord- ing to the Ten Commandments, and to daily ask God: teach us to walk along the narrow and diffi- cult road that we are not stuck. Jesus also gave us the commandment to love one another and promised us his presence and assistance: “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and We will come to him and make our home with him.” (John 14.23). The challenge of leading a Christian life is the same around the world! * Ukraine was a former Soviet republic and reached its current borders in 1945, with the an- nexation of Subcarpathian Rus’, now the Transcarpathian Oblast, and the homeland of the Epar- chy of Mukachevo. -
Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky - Savior of Jews During World War II
Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky - savior of Jews during World War II by Taras Hunczak (The Ukrainian Weekly, January 29,2006) "When I call Andrey Sheptytskyі a saint, I am not exaggerating." – Rabbi David Kahane, "Righteous of the Nations of the World" ("Gerechter der Volker der Erde," Die Zeit, December 27, 1985). Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky To understand the humanitarian role of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky during World War II, we have to place it in its historical context. Indeed, the problems facing the charismatic leader of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church challenged his principles and his ability to confront the criminal regimes of both communism and fascism. The Communists, who espoused a policy of atheism and dictatorship, introduced a system of rule the likes of which the people of western Ukraine never experienced in their life. In the short time of their rule (September 1939 to June 22, 1941) jails were filled with innocent people while thousands were exiled to Siberia. When the German Army advanced and the Red Army retreated from western Ukraine, the people discovered that jails were filled with corpses of young Ukrainians murdered by the NKVD. The attitude of the Ukrainian people, under the influence of the stereotype "Jew- Communist" or "Judeo-Bolshevism," which was based on a significant Jewish participation in the echelons of the Communist power structure, particularly in the secret police - the Cheka, GPU and NKVD(1) and which was further reinforced by the Nazi policy of anti-Semitism, exploded in some towns and cities into acts of violence against the Jewish people. Thus, a tragedy of the Ukrainian people turned into a tragedy of the Jewish people. -

The Maturation of Ecclesial Autonomy in the Catholic Church of Kyiv
Logos: A Journal of Eastern Christian Studies Vol. 52 (2011) Nos. 1–2, pp. 1–12 From Sheptytsky to Shevchuk: The Maturation of Ecclesial Autonomy in the Catholic Church of Kyiv The Catholic Church of Kyiv has seen its protohierarchs appointed and elected amid a wide variety of circumstances in the more than four centuries since it re-established full com- munion with the Church of Rome in 1596. Pope Clement VIII’s apostolic letter Decet Romanum Pontificem of 23 February 1596 made it clear that in the Metropolia of Kyiv the confirmation of the lawful election of bishops and their conse- cration and enthronement was the prerogative of the metropoli- tan of Kyiv, who confirms in the name of Rome without any further required recourse to it. While the rationale presented for this is rather contrived (namely, that the given province is distant from Rome and confirmation would therefore be diffi- cult and costly), nonetheless the principle is established and made inviolable. That same document establishes that the metropolitan of Kyiv-Halych, upon lawful election or nomina- tion, is to seek confirmation from the pope of Rome before taking office. Although it is not clearly stated in the document, the net effect was to free the process of nomination of bishops from the control of secular powers. While at first this seemed like a great triumph for a synodal process for the election of bishops, in time the intervention of the Roman Curia in all episcopal appointments became the rule, and secular govern- ments would also have a role to play. -

Given the historiogra- phical disproportions in the coverage of his biography, which has been reflected in relatively little attention to the early period of life and the creation of new “myths”, the periodization of main stages (milestones) of life and consistent reconstruction of biography of Casimir / Klymen- tiy Sheptytsky have been conducted. His family environment, education, worldview formation and evolution have been described, the peculiarities of his social and political activity in the re- gional societies and the Austrian parliament have been shown, the motives and circumstances of the choice of monastic life have been clarified.
