Historie der Rheinischen Musikschule Teil 1 Mit einem Beitrag von Professor Heinrich Lindlahr Zur Geschichte des Musikschulwesens in Köln 1815 - 1925 Zu Beginn des musikfreundlichen 19. Jahrhunderts blieb es in Köln bei hochfliegenden Plänen und deren erfolgreicher Verhinderung. 1815, Köln zählte etwa fünfundzwanzigtausend Seelen, die soeben, wie die Bewohner der Rheinprovinz insgesamt, beim Wiener Kongreß an das Königreich Preußen gefallen waren, 1815 also hatte von Köln aus ein ungenannter Musikenthusiast für die Rheinmetropole eine Ausbildungsstätte nach dem Vorbild des Conservatoire de Paris gefordert. Sein Vorschlag erschien in der von Friedrich Rochlitz herausgegebenen führenden Allgemeinen musikalischen Zeitung zu Leipzig. Doch Aufrufe solcher Art verloren sich hierorts, obschon Ansätze zu einem brauchbaren Musikschulgebilde in Köln bereits bestanden hatten: einmal in Gestalt eines Konservatorienplanes, wie ihn der neue Maire der vormaligen Reichstadt, Herr von VVittgenstein, aus eingezogenen kirchlichen Stiftungen in Vorschlag gebracht hatte, vorwiegend aus Restklassen von Sing- und Kapellschulen an St. Gereon, an St. Aposteln, bei den Ursulinen und anderswo mehr, zum anderen in Gestalt von Heimkursen und Familienkonzerten, wie sie der seit dem Einzug der Franzosen, 1794, stellenlos gewordene Salzmüdder und Domkapellmeister Dr. jur. Bernhard Joseph Mäurer führte. Unklar blieb indessen, ob sich der Zusammenschluss zu einem Gesamtprojekt nach den Vorstellungen Dr. Mäurers oder des Herrn von Wittgenstein oder auch jenes Anonymus deshalb zerschlug, weil die Durchführung von Domkonzerten an Sonn- und Feiertagen kirchenfremden und besatzungsfreundlichen Lehrkräften hätte zufallen sollen, oder mehr noch deshalb, weil es nach wie vor ein nicht überschaubares Hindernisrennen rivalisierender Musikparteien gab, deren manche nach Privatabsichten berechnet werden müssten, wie es die Leipziger Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung von 1815 lakonisch zu kommentieren wusste. -

WAGNER AND THE VOLSUNGS None of Wagner’s works is more closely linked with Old Norse, and more especially Old Icelandic, culture. It would be carrying coals to Newcastle if I tried to go further into the significance of the incom- parable eddic poems. I will just mention that on my first visit to Iceland I was allowed to gaze on the actual manuscript, even to leaf through it . It is worth noting that Richard Wagner possessed in his library the same Icelandic–German dictionary that is still used today. His copy bears clear signs of use. This also bears witness to his search for the meaning and essence of the genuinely mythical, its very foundation. D. Cornell University 2011 The purpose of this dissertation is to offer a novel reading of the steady decline that instrumental virtuosity underwent in its critical reception between c. 1815 and c. 1850, represented here by a selection of the most influential music periodicals edited in Europe at that time. In contemporary philosophy, the same period saw, on the one hand, the reconceptualization of music (especially of instrumental music) from ―pleasant nonsense‖ (Sulzer) and a merely ―agreeable art‖ (Kant) into the ―most romantic of the arts‖ (E. T. A. Hoffmann), a radically disembodied, aesthetically autonomous, and transcendent art and on the other, the growing suspicion about the tenability of the free subject of the Enlightenment. This dissertation‘s main claim is that those three developments did not merely coincide but, rather, that the changes in the aesthetics of music and the philosophy of subjectivity around 1800 made a deep impact on the contemporary critical reception of instrumental virtuosity. More precisely, it seems that instrumental virtuosity was increasingly regarded with suspicion because it was deemed incompatible with, and even threatening to, the new philosophic conception of music and via it, to the increasingly beleaguered notion of subjective freedom that music thus reconceived was meant to symbolize. -

" Purpose of Thesis This project has two components: a written discussion of the music of the Dichterliebe, and the lives of the composer Robert Schumann and the poet Heinrich Heine; and an audio tape of my performance of the Dichterliebe. The performance was the culmination of my study of the Dichterliebe, in particular, and of my voice studies, in general. Through the performance, I set out to share the wonderful music and poetry of the Dichterliebe as well as share my musical and vocal growth over the past four years. The written portion of the project was undertaken to satisfy my personal curiosity of the men who wrote the music and the poetry of the Dichterliebe. A study of the music without knowing the man who composed it or the man who wrote the words would be only half complete at best. Likewise, a study of the men and not the music would also be incomplete. That is why I included both venues of learning and experiencing in this project; and that is why I have included an audio tape of the performance with this written report. Brahms, Johannes (b Hamburg, 7 May 1833; d Vienna, 3 April 1897). German composer. The successor to Beethoven and Schubert in the larger forms of chamber and orchestral music, to Schubert and Schumann in the miniature forms of piano pieces and songs, and to the Renaissance and Baroque polyphonists in choral music, Brahms creatively synthesized the practices of three centuries with folk and dance idioms and with the language of mid and late 19thcentury art music. Brahms was the second child and first son of Johanna Henrika Christiane Nissen (1789–1865) and Johann Jakob Brahms (1806–72). His mother, an intelligent and thrifty woman simply educated, was a skilled seamstress descended from a respectable bourgeois family. His father came from yeoman and artisan stock that originated in lower Saxony and resided in Holstein from the mid18th century. A resourceful musician of modest talent, Johann Jakob learnt to play several instruments, including the flute, horn, violin and double bass, and in 1826 moved to the free Hanseatic port of Hamburg, where he earned his living playing in dance halls and taverns. -

,A DICHTERLIEBE BY ROBERT SCHUMANN THESIS Presented to the Graduate Council of the North Texas State College in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of MASTER OF MUSIC By Hubert Neil Davidson, B. Denton, Texas August, 1957 PREFACE The purpose of this work, an analysis of the song cycle Dichterliebe (Op. 1+8) by Robert Schumann, is to recognize the special features of the songs which will contribute to their understanding and musical interpretation and perform- ance. The Dichterliebe was chosen as the composition to be analyzed because of its prominent position in the vocal lit.- erature of the Romantic period. An acquaintance with the life of the poet, Heinrich Heine, as well as the life of the composer of these songs and their relationship to each other contributes toward an understanding of the cycle. Each of the sixteen songs in the cycle is analyzed according to its most important characteristics, including text setting, general harmonic structure, important role of the accompaniment, expressive techniques, mood, tempo, rhythm, and dynamics. When I asked him what was the matter he merely said to me “Well, you will soon hear it and understand.” One day he said to me “Come to Schober’s to-day, I will sing you a cycle of awe-inspiring songs. I am anxious to know what you will say about them. They have affected me more than has been the case with any other songs.” So, in a voice wrought with emotion, he sang the whole of the “Winterreise” through to us.1 In 1858, Schubert’s friend Josef von Spaun published a memoir of Schubert that included this recollection of the composer’s own performance of his Winterreise,D.911.Spaun’s poignant account is quoted in nearly every pro- gram and recording liner note for the work, and many assume that he meant all twenty-four songs in the cycle, roughly seventy-five uninterrupted minutes of music, presented to a rapt, silent audience—in other words, a standard, modern performance.2 Spaun’s emotive recollection raises many questions, however. The first concerns what Spaun meant by “the whole of the ‘Winter- reise,’” and this depends on the date of this performance, which cannot be established. As many scholars have observed, Schubert most likely sang only the twelve songs he had initially composed.3 Susan Youens recounts that the 1. -
