KING’SCOLLEGE CAMBRIDGE

CHAPELSERVICES LENTTERM HOLYWEEKANDEASTER 2015 NOTICES

In 2015 we are celebrating the 500th anniversary of the completion of the stonework of the Chapel. This will be commemorated in a number of ways, and information will be available through the normal channels as the year progresses. On Tuesday 20 January we start the anniversary year with a special sequence of words and music. There will be eight readings, beginning with an extract from the Will of Henry VI and concluding with some of Professor Michael Jaffé’s thoughts about the last major addition to the Chapel – The Adoration of the Magi by Peter Paul Rubens. The music choices will, to a greater or lesser extent in each case, pick up themes in the readings (as in our carol services). There is also in each case a College and/or University link with the composer. Through the year we will also be offering two series of special sermons. In the first we will focus on the legacy and message today of a number of ‘King’s Divines’. These are members of the College who have made an exceptional and distinctive contribution to Christian theology, spirituality or worship. We will also commemorate these people at a regular service on a date near to their date of death – or, as in the case of Brooke Foss Westcott who died in the summer, his birth. In the second we will focus on one of the fundamental objectives of the College as defined in the Statutes, ‘Education’, ‘Religion’, ‘Learning’ and ‘Research’. For some of these, we are inviting people from institutions with which we have deep historic connections to help us. Details of the sermon series are given at the back of this booklet.

SAID SERVICES Morning Prayer is said in one of the side chapels Monday – Friday each day of full term at 8.15 a.m.. This term there will be a celebration of Holy Communion at 12.30 p.m. each Wednesday in a side chapel. This is an innovation, but we hope it proves to be a welcome addition to our offering of services. On Sunday 8 February and Sunday 1 March there is a service of Holy Communion at 8.30 a.m. in the Memorial Chapel. Said services are not listed among the details of the choral services which make up the bulk of this booklet.

[ 2 ] SUNDAY PREACHERSTHIS TERM 18 January The Revd Dr Stephen Cherry Dean King’s Divines – Brooke Foss Westcott, Fellow 25 January The Revd Richard Lloyd Morgan Chaplain 1 February The Revd Margaret Widdess Acting Dean, Jesus College 8 February Professor Eamon Duffy Faculty of Divinity, University of Cambridge King’s Divines – Henry VI, Founder 15 February The Revd Dr Rowan Williams Anglican Chaplain, University of King’s Objectives – ‘Learning’ 22 February The Revd Rosie Harper Chaplain to the Bishop of Buckingham 1 March The Revd Canon David Kennedy Canon Precentor, Durham Cathedral 8 March The Revd Richard Lloyd Morgan Chaplain Maundy Thursday The Revd Dr Stephen Cherry Dean Easter Day The Revd Richard Lloyd Morgan Chaplain

SERVICE BOOKLETS Braille and large print service booklets are available from the Chapel Administrator for and Sung Eucharist services.

CHORAL SERVICES Services are normally sung by King’s College on Sundays and from Tuesdays to Saturdays. Services on Mondays are sung by King’s Voices, the College’s mixed voice choir. Exceptions are listed.

ORGAN RECITALS Each Saturday during full term time there is an organ recital at 6.30 p.m. until 7.15 p.m. Admission is free, and there is a retiring collection. As part of the celebrations of the 500th anniversary of the completion of the building of the Chapel which falls this year, most of the former College organ scholars are returning to give a recital. This series began last term and continues this term with Thomas Trotter (31 January), James Lancelot (14 February), Adrian Partington (21 February) and Robert Quinney (28 February). We are glad to mark this important strand in the musical history and life of the College.

[ 3 ] MUSIC Two specially crafted services take place in early March. On Tuesday 3 March, a Marian Vespers in plainsong, together with two major works from the Eton , forms the first of our celebrations of the year ’15’ in this 500th year. Henry VI’s choice of the Virgin Mary as a joint patron of the College is reflected, as well as his founding of Eton, in the music chosen. Both the Eton pieces to be sung were almost certainly heard in King’s in that era. The BBC will record this service for transmission on Wednesday 9 September. On Wednesday 4 March, the BBC will broadcast live a service comprising music by female composers. A repeat will be broadcast on the following Sunday, a day on which Radio 3 is featuring music by written by women. The King’s connection will be strong: Judith Weir is an Honorary Fellow; Judith Bingham wrote her setting of the canticles for the College, and Sally Beamish’s Be still will receive its première on this occasion. Hers is the first of six new pieces which will be given this year, commissioned through a generous benefaction of the late Michael Boswell (KC 1959), choral scholar. Details of the liturgies and concerts which form part of the eleventh Easter at King’s Festival are given in the body of this booklet.

ILLUSTRATIONS This term’s illustrations are reproduced from photographs of side chapel light by Richard Lloyd Morgan.

COLLECTIONS The majority of collections this term will be divided between Centre 33 and War Child. Centre 33 exists to help every young person in Cambridgeshire fulfil their potential, supporting and empowering them to overcome problems through a range of free and confidential services. War Child directly transforms the lives of tens of thousands of children through protection, education, livelihoods and advocacy in conflict-affected countries.

SERVICE LIST Copies of this booklet are available for sale at the Shop at King’s, please leave this one for others to use.

[ 4 ] RECORDING Please note that the use of cameras, recording equipment, video cameras and mobile phones is not permitted in chapel. Some services are recorded for webcasts – further details may be found on the College website at www.kings.cam.ac.uk/choir/webcasts.html.

[ 36 ] The Friends of King’s College, Chapel and Choir

The Chapel of King’s College, Cambridge is one of the most important medieval buildings in Europe. Since its Foundation by King Henry VI over five centuries ago, choral services have been an essential part of the daily life of the College.

The architectural majesty of the Chapel and the great musical quality of the Choir are admired and loved by millions of people the world over. Yet the College is solely responsible for the maintenance of the Chapel and the costs of the Choir.

The Friends of King’s College, Chapel and Choir programme encourages and recognises the financial support of individuals, families, foundations and organisations.

Gifts and bequests from Friends provide essential funding for the College. As a Friend, you help to ensure that the brightest and most promising studentsattendKing’s, tosupportteachingandresearchbyanextraordinary Fellowship, and to restore and maintain our remarkable buildings, including the iconic Chapel. In addition, many Friends choose specifically to support the Choir by helping with the refurbishment of the great organ, funding for choristerships, sponsoring travel, and contributing to the Choir endowment fund.
