MUSIC AT GRACE A Retrospective 2020 - 2021 WELCOME June 2021 (yes, JUNE!) Dear Friends, Well, the 2020-2021 season was a year with which to reckon! We were largely unable to plan more than a few weeks at a time, and relied heavily, if not totally, on our wonderful Staff Singers. Between September and February, the singers came in every week or two and recorded numerous anthems and hymns for our pre-recorded “Voices of Grace” worship videos. In addition to the Sunday services, we recorded Advent Lessons and Carols, monthly Evensongs, and several services of Compline. Beginning in Lent, the singers, along with clergy and music staff, began live-streaming our Sunday services, singing hymns, Anglican chant psalm, an anthem, and a choral setting of the communion service. We were now singing even more music on a Sunday than pre-pandemic! Our hearts were full on Easter Day, when we welcomed our aged 65+ parishioners in person for worship for the first time since March 2020. Brass, tympani, organ, and voices combined for a glorious celebration. We continued to open in-person worship to our parishioners on a limited basis, and then on the Feast of Pentecost, we once again had a mighty celebration with brass and tympani – opening that service with the hymn “Jesus Christ is risen today!” And on June 6, we re- opened the choir stalls to our wonderful and faithful volunteer choir members, who provide leadership for our summer worship. During this time, our Choristers were able to rehearse off and on, and several of them have joined us to sing for Sunday services or Evensongs. We look forward to the fall of 2022, when we can once again offer a fully-planned choral season, including three concerts presented by Collegium Ancora, ensemble-in-residence at Grace. This booklet is a retrospective of the music we were able to offer, either virtually or in person, during the COVID-19 pandemic. We felt so fortunate to be able to keep making music at Grace to whatever degree was possible, and we are deeply thankful to all those who helped make it happen. We hope that – once again – you will walk through our historic red doors on Westminster Street in downtown Providence for worship, concert, or both!
