N ew Head for Hawford, OV Artists, Stephen Cleobury concert & a tribute to Cecil Duckworth Announcement of New Head at King’s Hawford The Headmaster and Governors of The King’s School, Worcester are delighted to announce the appointment of Mrs Jennie Phillips as the new Head of King’s Hawford, one of Worcester’s leading 2 – 11 Prep Schools. Jennie will join in April 2021 from Monmouth School Girls’ Prep School where she is currently the Head. She was appointed from a dynamic field of sitting Heads and Deputies, and was the unanimous choice of the Headmaster, Governors and the staff who met her. Jennie was educated at Oxford High School, and read Education at the University of Exeter. A keen hiker and swimmer, Jennie is married to Eddie and they have two daughters, Amelia and Daisy, who are all excited about the move. Reflecting on her appointment, Mrs Phillips said, “I am absolutely delighted to be joining the team at King’s Hawford. The school has a wonderful warmth and a sense of community which is clearly held dear by parents, staff and pupils alike. I very much look forward to getting to know the school community and building on the excellent work of Mr Jim Turner, whilst working closely with Mr Richard Chapman, Head of King’s St Albans, under the Head of our Foundation, Mr Gareth Doodes. Sie finden den Ablauf des Gottesdienstes, die Lieder, eine Druckvorlage für einen „Gottesdienstzettel“ wie auch eine „exegetische Skizze“ für den dem Schlussgottesdienst zugrundeliegenden Bibeltext Jesaja 51,1–5. IASL 2015; 40(1): 1–20 Martina Wagner-Egelhaaf „… und steure deiner Feinde Mord“ Gewalt im Kirchenlied Abstract: This essay looks at moments of violence in Christian hymns. It analyzes chants used in the early modern struggle between Catholics and Protestants and in missionary movements which still can be found in contemporary hymnbooks. The article shows that the chants not only direct aggression against an outer enemy but also against the fiend within. As the German word ‘Gewalt’ means both ‘violence’ and ‘power’, the hymns oscillate between both meanings. The ‘Gewalt’ being praised in the hymns often self-reflectively addresses the chants’ own violence and/or power as it is illustrated by a brief look at Heinrich von Kleist’s novella Die heilige Cäcilie oder die Gewalt der Musik. DOI 10.1515/iasl-2015-0001 Kirchenlieder mit Gewalt in Verbindung zu bringen, liegt auf den ersten Blick nicht unbedingt nahe, dient das Kirchenlied doch in erster Linie der gottesdienst- lichen Erbauung und dem Lob Gottes. Und doch gibt es in den Gesangbüchern, die insgesamt ziemlich politisch korrekt geworden sind,1 bis heute Liedtexte, in denen es keineswegs zimperlich zugeht. Dies ist umso mehr in historischen Gesangbüchern der Fall. Es ist ein Leichtes, hier Beispiele zu präsentieren, bei denen man sich fragt, wie sie gesungen werden konnten, ohne dass sich dabei das christliche Gewissen regte. Im Fokus des vorliegenden Beitrags steht jedoch das, was tatsächlich in den Gesangbüchern stehen geblieben ist, was gewisser- maßen die Gewalt-Zensur überstanden hat und vielleicht doch unter dem Vor- zeichen einer gepflegten, impliziten, subtilen, in ihrer Ambiguität vielleicht den- noch wirkmächtigen Gewaltförmigkeit diskutiert werden kann. -

Cracking a Centuries-Old Tradition hen I went to Cambridge, WEngland, on sabbatical in 2013–14, I never dreamed I would wind up conducting one of the world’s great choirs, and pos- sibly changing the way they sing early music. My project for the year was to write a follow-up to Shakespeare’s Songbook (Norton, 2004), my study of all the songs sung, quoted, or alluded to in the plays of Shakespeare. The Poetry Handbook I Read / That John Donne Must Be Taken at Speed : / Which Is All Very Well / Were It Not for the Smell / of His Feet Catechising His Creed.)
Introduction his book is for anyone who wants to read poetry with a better understanding of its craft and technique ; it is also a textbook T and crib for school and undergraduate students facing exams in practical criticism. Teaching the practical criticism of poetry at several universities, and talking to students about their previous teaching, has made me sharply aware of how little consensus there is about the subject. Some teachers do not distinguish practical critic- ism from critical theory, or regard it as a critical theory, to be taught alongside psychoanalytical, feminist, Marxist, and structuralist theor- ies ; others seem to do very little except invite discussion of ‘how it feels’ to read poem x. And as practical criticism (though not always called that) remains compulsory in most English Literature course- work and exams, at school and university, this is an unwelcome state of affairs. For students there are many consequences. Teachers at school and university may contradict one another, and too rarely put the problem of differing viewpoints and frameworks for analysis in perspective ; important aspects of the subject are omitted in the confusion, leaving otherwise more than competent students with little or no idea of what they are being asked to do. How can this be remedied without losing the richness and diversity of thought which, at its best, practical criticism can foster ? What are the basics ? How may they best be taught ? My own answer is that the basics are an understanding of and ability to judge the elements of a poet’s craft. Profoundly different as they are, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Pope, Dickinson, Eliot, Walcott, and Plath could readily converse about the techniques of which they are common masters ; few undergraduates I have encountered know much about metre beyond the terms ‘blank verse’ and ‘iambic pentameter’, much about form beyond ‘couplet’ and ‘sonnet’, or anything about rhyme more complicated than an assertion that two words do or don’t. -
