Excerpt • Temple University Press Introduction An Indian in Washington India and America are located on opposite sides of the earth; therefore it is natural for America to think that we walk upside down, and for us to think that Americans walk upside down. —Pandita Ramabai, The Peoples of the United States (1889) The Sufferance of the Foreigner n late September 1905, the Indian nationalist Lajpat Rai had gathered with a group of tourists in the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol, when a guide directed Itheir attention to the works of art surrounding them. Plastered on the ceil- ing was The Apotheosis of Washington, a fresco featuring the first U.S. presi- dent on a celestial throne, flanked on each side by figures from classical Greco-Roman and nouveau American mythology (Figure I.1). Just below, The Frieze of American History encircled the rotunda with its selective time- line, and at eye level were enormous neoclassical canvases depicting scenes from the American Revolution and the conquest of the Americas. From ceil- ing to floor, the artwork of the Capitol presented a set of interwoven images that moved seamlessly from the mythological to the historical, containing within it, it would seem, a visual argument: The United States was the heir apparent of Western empire. At the dawn of the new century, as America extended its imperial reach across the globe, who would have thought to see otherwise? In Washington, DC, during a three-week tour of the East Coast, Lajpat Rai discussed his visit in an editorial for the Panjabee, an English-language weekly based out of Lahore. -

This research paper describes a corpus based transliteration system for Punjabi language. The existence of two scripts for Punjabi language has created a script barrier between the Punjabi literature written in India and in Pakistan. This research project has developed a new system for the first time of its kind for Shahmukhi script of Punjabi language. The proposed system for Shahmukhi to Gurmukhi transliteration has been implemented with various research techniques based on language corpus. The corpus analysis program has been run on both Shahmukhi and Gurmukhi corpora for generating statistical data for different types like character, word and n-gram frequencies. This statistical analysis is used in different phases of transliteration. Potentially, all members of the substantial Punjabi community will benefit vastly from this transliteration system. 1 Introduction One of the great challenges before Information Technology is to overcome language barriers dividing the mankind so that everyone can communicate with everyone else on the planet in real time. South Asia is one of those unique parts of the world where a single language is written in different scripts. This is the case, for example, with Punjabi language spoken by tens of millions of people but written in Indian East Punjab (20 million) in Gurmukhi script (a left to right script based on Devanagari) and in Pakistani West Punjab (80 million), written in Shahmukhi script (a right to left script based on Arabic), and by a growing number of Punjabis (2 million) in the EU and the US in the Roman script. -

' ABSTRACT India owes to Lala Har Dayal a great debt of gratitude. What he did intotality to his mother country is yet to be acknowledged properly. The paradox ridden Har Dayal - a moody idealist, intellectual, who felt an almost mystical empathy with the masses in India and America. He kept the National Independence flame burning not only in India but outside too. In 1905 he went to England for Academic pursuits. But after few years he had leave England for his revolutionary activities. He stayed in America and other European countries for 25 years and finally returned to England where he wrote three books. Har Dayal's stature was so great that its very difficult to put him under one mould. He was visionary who all through his life devoted to Boddhi sattava doctrine, rational interpretation of religions and sharing his erudite knowledge for the development of self culture. The proposed thesis seeks to examine the purpose of his returning to intellectual pursuits in England. Simultaneously the thesis also analyses the contemporary relevance of his works which had a common thread of humanism, rationalism and scientific temper. Relevance for his ideas is still alive as it was 50 years ago. He was true a patriotic who dreamed independence for his country. He was pioneer for developing science in laymen and scientific temper among youths. -

Gill: Modern Punjabi Poetry Reading Modern Punjabi Poetry: From Bhai Vir Singh to Surjit Patar Tejwant Singh Gill Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar ________________________________________________ The paper evaluates the specificity of modern Punjabi poetry, along with its varied and multi-faceted readings by literary historians and critics. In terms of theme, form, style and technique, modern Punjabi poetry came upon the scene with the start of the twentieth century. Readings colored by historical sense, ideological concern and awareness of tradition have led to various types of reactions and interpretations. ________________________________________________________________ Our literary historians and critics generally agree that modern Punjabi poetry began with the advent of the twentieth century. The academic differences which they have do not come in the way of this common agreement. In contrast, earlier critics and historians, Mohan Singh Dewana the most academic of them all, take the modern in the sense of the new only. Such a criterion rests upon a passage of time that ushers in a new way of living. How this change then enters into poetic composition through theme, motif, technique, form, and style is not the concern of critics and historians who profess such a linear view of the modern. Mohan Singh Dewana, who was the first scholar to write the history of Punjabi literature, did not initially believe that something innovative came into being at the turn of the past century. If there was any change, it was not for the better. In his path-breaking History of Punjabi Literature (1932), he bemoaned that a sharp decline had taken place in Punjabi literature. -

111 Karanbir Singh: Sohan Singh Bhakna Sketching the Formative Years of Sohan Singh Bhakna’s Life in Punjab Karanbir Singh Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar, Punjab _______________________________________________________________ Formed in the United States of America, the Ghadar Party was the harbinger of novel perspectives in Indian politics. The British Government crushed this movement ruthlessly during the early days of the World War I. There exist only limited literature which focuses on the lives of those Ghadarites who made daring efforts to establish a revolutionary movement. This paper assesses the early life of Sohan Singh Bhakna who was to later become the founder of the Ghadar Party. His long life span of ninety eight years presents a picture of a man who remained consistent in his actions whatever may be the consequences. In this article, an attempt is made to bring out the early, formative years, of the life of this revolutionary before he decided to migrate to America. The paper suggests that, it was not only the American liberal but racialized atmosphere which influenced his actions, leading him to think deeply about the meaning of slavery and freedom, but also his life experiences in Punjab itself, especially his interactions with Baba Kesar, which had a transforming impact on his state of mind. _______________________________________________________________ Introduction Sohan Singh Bhakna - the founder and first President of the Ghadar Party was a low profile altruistic revolutionary. From a Punjabi peasant to an American labourer and from a spirited revolutionary to a radical thinker, Bhakna’s life depicts an apt portrayal of the Ghadar Movement and its heroic legacy. -

Gurdial Singh: Messiah of the Marginalized Rana Nayar Panjab University, Chandigarh In the past two months, Indian literature has lost two of its greatest writers; first it was the redoubtable Mahasweta Devi, who left us in July, and then it was the inimitable Gurdial Singh (August 18, 2016). Both these writers enjoyed a distinctive, pre-eminent position in their respective literary traditions, and both managed to transcend the narrow confines of the geographical regions within which they were born, lived or worked. Strangely enough, despite their personal, ideological, aesthetic and/or cultural differences, both worked tirelessly, all their lives, for restoring dignity, pride and self-respect to “the last man” on this earth. What is more, both went on to win the highest literary honor of India, the Jnanpeeth, for their singular contribution to their respective languages, or let me say, to the rich corpus of Indian Literature. Needless to say, the sudden departure of both these literary giants has created such a permanent vacuum in our literary circles that neither time nor circumstance may now be able to replenish it, ever. And it is, indeed, with a very heavy heart and tearful, misty eyes that I bid adieu to both these great writers, and also pray for the eternal peace of their souls. Of course, I could have used this opportunity to go into a comparative assessment of the works of both Mahasweta Devi and Gurdial Singh, too, but I shall abstain from doing so for obvious reasons. The main purpose of this essay, as the title clearly suggests, is to pay tribute to Gurdial Singh's life and work. -

Pakistan Connection Diasporas @ BBC World Service Audience Research Report Authors: Marie Gillespie, Sadaf Rivzi, Matilda Andersson, Pippa Virdee, Lucy Michael, Sophie West A BBC World Service / Open University Research Partnership 1 Foreword What does a shop owner in Bradford have in common with a graduate from Princeton USA, a construction worker in Bahrain and a banker in the City of London? All are users of the bbcurdu.com website, and all are part of the global Pakistani diaspora. The term diaspora is used to describe the global dispersion of migrant groups of various kinds. Diasporas are of growing economic, political and cultural significance. In a world where migration, geopolitical dynamics, communication technologies and transport links are continually changing, it is clear that culture and geography no longer map neatly onto one another. Understanding diaspora groups inside and outside its base at Bush House, London, is ever more important for the BBC World Service, too. Diaspora audiences are increasingly influencing the way the BBC conceives and delivers output. For example, over 60% of the weekly users of bbcurdu.com are accessing the site from outside the subcontinent, and this proportion is rising. The same trend has been observed for other BBC language websites. (See BBC World Agenda, September 2008.) The research presented here is based on a unique partnership between BBC World Service Marketing Communication and Audiences (MC&A) and The Open University. Art and creative expression find an integral place in the Punjabi culture. The culture though abundant in tales of love and is predominantly influenced by Sikhism, the commonest religion in the state that promotes gender equality, is still far from being the ideal society that the founders of Sikh society and the visionary rulers and leaders of the land had dreamed of. Women are deemed to be the weaker and inferior gender and plenty of stereotypes mar the quality of their lives on everyday basis. Gender roles limit the liberation of females in the region. Though a change in the scenario is evident with an increasing focus of the government on education of masses particularly women, the scenario in rural areas especially remains grim. Art and craft is not only a creative outlet for rural women but is also a skill which if rightly utilized can earn them their much desired financial independence. Financial independence is paramount in the process of women empowerment. Hence, promotion of creative art and commercial exercise of these skills can do wonders for women in the state. This paper examines the role of folk media of punjab in empowering craftswomen of the region. It is found that the folk media, literature and religious texts are enthused with ideals that foster art, craft and their free expression. Folk media, being a deep rooted connection with the local rural audience, tends to have a better impact on the masses. -

Those plants are utilized in some means, such as vegetable, fruit, ornamental plant or medicinal plant in it native country or even it was invasive plant but people learned how to manage with that plant, they can utilize it. On the contrary way, an invasive plant of any country may not be invasive in any country else. Most of the invasive plants are intentionally introduced to a country for some purpose especially for ornamental plant. Hydrocotyle umbrellata L. was introduced to Thailand as ornamental plant, the plant can grow well and with some habit of invasive plant of this plant, nowadays the plant was found in many natural areas as weed. Introduction Most of invasive plant in an area is alien plant which was introduced from different habitat within a country or other country across geographic barrier. Well development of transportation stimulates traveling and international trading which cause of increasing introduction of alien species. Some of introduced alien plants can establish and spread out if it can adapt itself to survive in the new habitat well. If the environment of new habitat is suitable for it growth, the plant may express it invasiveness and compete for space and nutrient with native plant which it may complete over native plants due to lack of it natural enemy in new habitat.
