POSITION: Transmitter Engineer DEPARTMENT: Engineering REPORTS TO: Chief Engineer
KCRW is a six-station cluster consisting of KCRW, Santa Monica, KDRW, Santa Barbara, KCRU, Oxnard, KCRY, Mojave & KCRI, Indio, and KERW, Los Osos-Baywood Park. Additionally it operates seven low power translator stations in the communities, of Borrego Springs, Banning, Twenty-nine Palms, Lemon Grove, Ojai, Goleta, Gorman & Santa Paula. Our transmitter facilities are spread out across 13 different locations, from Santa Barbara to San Diego & both the upper and lower deserts of Southern California.
Our ideal candidate must be able to work with minimal supervision, be a self-starter, and work well under deadlines and pressure, as well as being solution oriented. The candidate will be responsible for all day-to-day repair/maintenance/installation of equipment utilized in RF transmission and being on-call for emergency response under the supervision of engineering department manager.
Job Summary
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
5-10 years’ experience installing/maintaining/repairing radio transmitting equipment Knowledge of high power solid-state FM transmitters Knowledge/understanding of RF transmissions systems and theory Working knowledge and understanding of analog and digital test equipment Knowledge of electrical systems, transfer switches and standby generators Ability to troubleshoot and maintain telecom circuits, ex. POTS, DSL, IP, ISDN, T1, radio loops Thorough understanding of analog, AES and composite audio standards HVAC knowledge and facility management skills Experience with T1 transport hardware (Intraplex, APT) and satellite uplink & downlink gear Knowledge of FCC rules and regulations pertaining to broadcast compliance Familiarity with microwave STL installation and maintenance 24/7 on-call status (telephone provided) with occasional overnight work
Education and Licensing Requirements
High School Diploma or equivalent Associates Degree, trade school, military training or direct experience required SBE Certification Valid US driver’s license and a clean driving record
Physical Requirements
May require lifting or moving up to 50 lbs. May require climbing ladders and working on elevated surfaces (e.g. rooftops) Requires good manual dexterity for soldering, use of hand tools and working on small components
