The fundraiser comes in response to a call from the Los Angeles community, including the large Japanese and Japanese American community, to support friends, family and colleagues in Japan. Recognizing the important ties between Southern California and Japan, KPCC and its public broadcasting colleagues felt it was appropriate to lend their airwaves and websites in support of the relief and rebuilding efforts. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is also behind the fundraising initiative. “The road to rebuilding is a long path, and we must continue to do everything we can to aid the people of Japan, especially in light of the recent aftershocks,” Villaraigosa said.
