DIGITAL PAINTING

Look at the two pictures on the next page. One of them is in oil canvas (self-portrait) by great impressionist Van Gogh and the other one is a version of a-state of the art digital painting by Tadao Cern. Unlike Van Gogh, Tadao Cern uses the computer as a means to express himself artistically. Many says that Tadao’s digital painting is exceptionally good.

Digital painting is the process of painting on a tablet and creating artwork digitally on a computer. Just like a traditional painting, it is done through computer painting software that uses brushes. Digital painting is an emerging art form in which traditional painting techniques such as water color, oils, acrylic paints, etc. are applied using digital tools by means of a computer, a graphics tablet, stylus, and software. Traditional painting is painting with physical medium as opposed to a more modern style like digital painting. Digital painting differs from other forms of digital art, particularly computer-generated art, it does not involve the computer rendering from a model. The artist uses painting techniques to create the digital painting directly on the computer. Painting has changed in the last few decades, thanks to the power and creative ability of . Computers can make just about every aspect of painting easier. Computers can make you a better artist. They can and do improve your artist skills. Computers do not paint for you more than a brush paints do, but computers provide you with digital technologies that have become more important in this competitive era. Advantages of Using Computers in Painting:

 Errors can easily be corrected  Work is done in an organized, no messy environment  Colors do not fade, and brushes are never worn-out  Stages and version(s) of the artwork can be saved, filed, and easily retrieved.  Work can be transferred or printed on almost any media.  Work can be formatted and easily e-mailed to interested parties

Software used for Digital Art/Graphic Design Applications Digital artists use the following software:

1. Editing programs for photography and graphics can be used for drawing, painting, typography, and photo enhancing. Photographic images can be manipulated by using certain programs. Filters and effects are also available

3

and can be added in a photo. One can also use specific software with mechanism that add text and other designs to a drawing or picture. 2. editors are programs that create and edit vector graphics and images. A vector graphic is made up of points, lines, corners, and shapes that can be digitally changed to a desired outcome. This type of editing software can be used for typography, logo designs and illustrations.

3. CAD computer-aided design software is used to assist in the creation, modification, analysis or optimization of design. It is commonly used in architecture, design, and fabrication.

4. Diagramming software is a that used to generate graphical diagrams. This software is used basically for architecture, software architecture and data flows.

5. Desktop publishing software are employed in creating posters. Flyers and any other printed media (example Canva, https://canva.com.ph for education)

6. Three-dimensional images are produced by 3D software (e.g. http://fusion 360.com.ph). These assets can be used in wide variety of applications such as video games, animation, and films that require special visual effects. 3D graphics software is also used in architecture to create models of proposed structures. Majority of the graphic software companies offer a suite or collection of design and production software. For beginners and hobbyist, there are free and open-source software that possess similar features as the ones for professionals. Open-source software can be freely downloaded and used. Examples are GIMP, Inkscape.

GIMP – used for photo manipulation which is the free equivalent of .

Inkscape – an open source which is equivalent to Adobe Illustrator. Equipment and Tools need to start Digital Painting To bring your artwork from paper to your computer you need hardware like:

1. Computer- a computer and to run on to create a digital painting. It is important that your computer can run a software program. 2. Scanner – it is an essential equipment to digital painting. Without one, you cannot digitize your art work. A scanner is also useful for scanning textures – like real canvas and water color paper-to make patterns which you can apply as backgrounds for your digital paintings. 3. Digital tablet and stylus- A real world brush changes the way it deposits paint when its shape changes. Push down on a brush tips and spread out the bristles. Make the stroke larger and the shape changes. Tilt a brush and again the shape changes, depositing in a different way. These features can now be done with varying degrees of success using a pen stylus (pen tool) to make marks and a digital tablet to communicate directions to the computer.

What Software tools and commands are used in digital painting?  The Brush Tool- tool that applies color to your art work, similar to the way a traditional paintbrush would apply paint on the canvas or paper. The edges of the lines created when using the brush is slightly softer than that of the other tools, mimicking a real brush.  Burn tool – This tool darkens an image. To use this tool, just drag the icon over the image.  Dodge tool – it lightens an image. The Dodge and burn tool add dimension to you flat 2D drawing.  Eraser tool – it can erase part of the image in a certain layer. Works like the common pencil eraser. It cleans up imperfections in your work, making your job a lot easier.  Gradient tool - use this to highlight a color and make it fade from dark to light.  Hand tool – it moves around an image within an object Use as zoom tool when you want to adjust the section of the picture.  Paint Bucket tool – this tool fills/makes an area one color. You can fill and change the color of the design.  Pencil tool – these tools draw or paint a line like the brush tool except that it has hard edges but basically the same as the brush tool.  Pen tool- makes lines and can be used to create different shapes.  Sponge tool – it soaks color out of the image  Type tool – it puts text in a picture  Lasso tool – it can select areas within a layer that cannot be reached with the Marquee tool  Marquee tool – this is a group of tools that allows you to select rectangles, ellipses, circles, squares.  Move tool – this tool moves around all objects within a layer

What are the Different Elements and Principles of Arts Applied in Digital Printing?

Elements of art are the building blocks of visual art. Line, shapes/forms, color, texture, space and value are the elements of arts that are also applied in digital painting. The Principles of arts represent how the artist uses the elements of arts to create an effect and to help convey the artist`s intent. The principles of art and design are balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm and unity/variety. Here are some of the amazing tasks a computer software can do: drawing, coloring, making floor plans, and creating magazine layouts, poster, invitations, book covers, comic books, decors and stage sets.

Activity 1 Directions: Arrange the letters to form a word based on the given clue.

1. NOITPROROP- the size is compared to what is next to it.

2. YRHTHM- visual elements in a work of art that create a sense of action or implied motion.

3. INUYT- a similar element throughout a work of art that brings parts together. 4. PATERNT – They can be created with lines, shapes and color repeatedly.

5. CEBANAL – is the distribution of the visual weight of objects in a work of art, color, size and texture.

6. EPMHAISS – main idea, the main focus, or the thing your eyes see first.

7. TSACONTR –differences in a work of art. Light and dark, rough and smooth, curved line and straight line.
