Mahabharata Tatparnirnaya
Mahabharatha Tatparya Nirnaya Chapter XIX The episodes of Lakshagriha, Bhimasena's marriage with Hidimba, Killing Bakasura, Draupadi svayamwara, Pandavas settling down in Indraprastha are described in this chapter. The details of these episodes are well-known. Therefore the special points of religious and moral conduct highlights in Tatparya Nirnaya and its commentaries will be briefly stated here. Kanika's wrong advice to Duryodhana This chapter starts with instructions of Kanika an expert in the evil policies of politics to Duryodhana. This Kanika was also known as Kalinga. Probably he hailed from Kalinga region. He was a person if Bharadvaja gotra and an adviser to Shatrujna the king of Sauvira. He told Duryodhana that when the close relatives like brothers, parents, teachers, and friends are our enemies, we should talk sweet outwardly and plan for destroying them. Heretics, robbers, theives and poor persons should be employed to kill them by poison. Outwardly we should pretend to be religiously.Rituals, sacrifices etc should be performed. Taking people into confidence by these means we should hit our enemy when the time is ripe. In this way Kanika secretly advised Duryodhana to plan against Pandavas. Duryodhana approached his father Dhritarashtra and appealed to him to send out Pandavas to some other place. Initially Dhritarashtra said Pandavas are also my sons, they are well behaved, brave, they will add to the wealth and the reputation of our kingdom, and therefore, it is not proper to send them out. However, Duryodhana insisted that they should be sent out. He said he has mastered one hundred and thirty powerful hymns that will protect him from the enemies. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by The Trumpeter - Journal of Ecosophy (Athabasca University) Dharma in the Mahabharata as a response to Ecological Crises: A speculation By Kamesh Aiyer Abstract Without doing violence to Vyaasa, the Mahabharata (Vyaasa, The Mahabharata 1933-1966) can be properly viewed through an ecological prism, as a story of how “Dharma” came to be established as a result of a conflict over social policies in response to on-going environmental/ecological crises. In this version, the first to recognize the crises and to attempt to address them was Santanu, King of Hastinapur (a town established on the banks of the Ganges). His initial proposals evoked much opposition because draconian and oppressive, and were rescinded after his death. Subsequently, one of Santanu’s grandsons, Pandu, and his children, the Pandavas, agreed with Santanu that the crises had to be addressed and proposed more acceptable social policies and practices. Santanu’s other grandson, Dhritarashtra, and his children, the Kauravas, disagreed, believing that nothing needed to be done and opposed the proposed policies. The fight to establish these policies culminated in the extended and widespread “Great War” (the “Mahaa-Bhaarata”) that was won by the Pandavas. Some of the proposed practices/social policies became core elements of "Hinduism" (such as cow protection and caste), while others became accepted elements of the cultural landscape (acceptance of the rights of tribes to forests as “commons”). Still other proposals may have been implied but never became widespread (polyandry) or may have been deemed unacceptable and immoral (infanticide). -

The sobriquet became a popular shorthand for the Puerto Rican exodus to the United States after World War II. Since the mid-1960s, the neologism became associated with the literary and artistic movement known as "Nuyorican." The movement was institutionalized with the 1973 founding ofthe Nuyorican Poets Café in the Lower East Side of Manhattan by Miguel Algarín and Miguel Piñero. Much of Nuyorican literature featured frequent autobiographical references, the predominance of the English language, street slang, realism, parodie humor, subversiva politics, and a ruptura with the island's literary models. Since the 1980s, the literature of the Puerto Rican diaspora has been characterized as "post-Nuyorican" or "Diasporican" to capture sorne of its stylistic and thematic shifts, including a movement away from urban blight. violence, colloquialism, and radicalism. A narrow view strictly to the mainstream ignores all the tributaries that feed it. American literature is AMERICAN not one tradition but all traditions. From those who have been here for thousands of years to the most recent immigrants, we are all contributing to American culture. We are all being translated into a new language. BOOK Everyone should know by now that Columbus did not “discover” America. Rather, we are all still discovering America—and we must continue to do AWARDS so. The Before Columbus Foundation was founded in 1976 as a nonprofit educational and service organization dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of contemporary American multicultural literature. The goals of BCF are to provide recognition and a wider audience for the wealth of cultural and ethnic diversity that constitutes American writing. BCF has always employed the term “multicultural” not as a description of an aspect of American literature, but as a definition of all American litera- ture. BCF believes that the ingredients of America’s so-called “melting pot” are not only distinct, but integral to the unique constitution of American Culture—the whole comprises the parts. In 1978, the Board of Directors of BCF (authors, editors, and publishers representing the multicultural diversity of American Literature) decided that one of its programs should be a book award that would, for the first time, respect and honor excellence in American literature without restric- tion or bias with regard to race, sex, creed, cultural origin, size of press or ad budget, or even genre. -

WRITING AND LITERATURE: 21 CREDITS REQUIRED ENG270 Introduction to Poetry [Required Course] 3 credits This course introduces students to the formal conventions of poetry as well as the basic elements that work to create a poem. Poems from different countries and different historical periods will be explored, at times from different critical perspectives. Works by such poets as William Shakespeare, John Donne, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, W.B. Yeats, Langston Hughes, e.e. cummings, Federico Garcia Lorca, Adrienne Rich, Audre Lorde, Leslie Marmon Silko, and Gary Soto will be discussed. ENG295 World Literatures Written in English [Required Course] 3 credits This capstone course introduces students to postcolonial literatures of the Anglophone diaspora. Texts may include literary works from Africa, South and Southeast Asia, Australia, Canada, the Caribbean, Ireland, and New Zealand. Students will examine world literatures in their historical and cultural contexts. In some semesters, the course may focus on one particular geographical region and/or ethnic group. Choose two of the following courses: ENG289 Introduction to Literary Critical Studies 3 credits Students read, discuss and write analytic essays about important texts in literary critical theory. They also learn to apply critical methods to specific literary texts. Some theorists covered might include Aristotle, Immanuel Kant, T.S. Elliot, Mikhail Baktin, Walter Benjamin, Jacques Lacan, Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, Elaine Showalter, Helene Cixous, Edward Said, Henry Louis Gates and Judith Butler. I obtained my first pair of glasses in the first grade only because my mom bartered cleaning services for them. While the glasses were adult frames and were literally half the size of my tiny face, my mom cleaned the optometrist office for a long time just so that I could see the chalkboard. My mother has lived a tough life but her support of my educational pursuits has never wavered. -

One of the most rooted expressions of a cultural presence or signifier of belonging is the creation of a literary tradition. The three texts examined in this review essay review—The Latino/a Canon and the Emergence of Post-Sixties Literature by Raphael Dalleo and Elena Machado Sáez; On Latinidad: U.S. Latino Literature and the Construction of Ethnicity by Marta Caminero-Santangelo; and A Companion to U.S. Latino Literatures edited by Carlota Caulfield and Darien J. Davis1—testify to a U.S. Latino/a accumulation of texts that have chronicled an undeniable presence, growing Emerging Canons, Unfolding in force and significance with each decade of the 20th and 21st centuries.
