Chapter 1: Starting With Windows 10

To Turn a Computer On: • If the screen is blank, press a key to ensure it is not just in sleep or hibernation mode, or Locate and press the power button

To Sign Into Windows: 1. After switching on your computer, press any key or press + + if prompted 2. If necessary, click on your user name or Other user 3. Type your user name (p00#####) and the password

To Initiate the Windows Search Feature: • Click in the Search… bar

To Change the Windows Search :

1. Click in the Search bar, then click on Settings 2. Change the settings as desired

To Put Your Computer to Sleep: 1. Click on the Windows icon in the or press on the keyboard to display the 2. Click on Power 3. Select Sleep

To Shut Down Your Computer: 1. Save all documents 2. Click on the Windows icon in the taskbar or press on the keyboard to display the Start menu 3. Click on Power 4. Select Shut down

Chapter 2: Personalising the User Interface

To Add Tiles to the Start Screen: 1. From the Start screen, right-click on the desired app or program 3. Select Pin to Start

To Move a Tile on the Start Menu: 1. Click and drag the tile to the desired location 2. Release the mouse button once a space opens at the appropriate location

To Change the Size of a Tile: 1. In the Start menu, right-click on the tile to display the shortcut menu

2. Point to Resize, then select Small, Medium, Large or Wide as required

To Turn the Live Tile Feature on and Off: 1. Right-click on the tile to display the shortcut menu 2. Select More, Turn live tile on or Turn live tile off as required

To Remove Tiles From the Start Menu: 1. Right-click on the tile 2. Select Unpin from Start

To Pin an App to the Taskbar: 1. Display the Start menu 2. Right-click on the desired app or program tile 3. Select More, Pin to taskbar

To Create Desktop Program Shortcut Icons: 1. Right-click on an empty area of the desktop 2. Select New > Shortcut 3. Browse for the program file (.exe), folder or file location

To Change Your Account Picture: 1. Display the Start menu, then click on the account name at the top of the menu and select Change account settings

2. Click on [Browse for one], navigate to and select an image, then click on

[Choose picture]

To Set Up : 1. Click in the taskbar Search… bar 2. Follow the prompts

To Use Cortana: 1. Click on Ask me anything in the taskbar 2. Type a keyword, phrase or question 3. Click on the appropriate response

To Customise Cortana: 1. Click on Ask me anything in the taskbar 2. Click on the Notebook icon

3. Select a category

4. Adjust the settings as required

Chapter 4: Working With Desktop Windows

To Start a Desktop Program or an App: 1. In the taskbar, click in the Search… bar 2. Type the program or app name, then click on the program in the search results

To Use the Ribbon: 1. Click on a tab to display the commands 2. Click on a button to activate a command or display a gallery

To Use the File Tab: 1. Click on the File tab 2. Click on the desired option

To Switch Between Programs in the Taskbar: • Click on the program or app icon To display a list of recent files in the taskbar: • Right-click on the program icon To display a list of open files in the taskbar:

• Point to the program icon

To Resize a Window Using Snap: • Drag the title bar of the window to the very top of the screen to maximise the window, or • Drag two windows, one to the left and one to the right of the screen, to position them side by side

To Minimise All Other Open Windows Using Shake: 1. Click and hold the mouse button on the title bar 2. Shake the window from side to side 3. Repeat the above steps to restore minimised windows

To View Installed Programs: 1. In the taskbar, click in the Search box and type ‘’ 2. Select Control Panel 3. Click on Programs, Programs and Features

To Open : • Click on the File Explorer icon in the taskbar, or • Click in the Search… bar and type file explorer, or • Press +

To View Storage Devices in File Explorer: 1. Launch File Explorer

2. Click on the device or drive in the Navigation pane

Chapter 6: Working With Folders

To Open File Explorer: • Click on the File Explorer icon in the taskbar, or • Click in the Search… bar and type file explorer

To Navigate the Folder Hierarchy: • Click on a grey arrow beside a folder to expand its contents, or

• Click on a folder to display its contents in the right pane, or • Click on the location or folder in the Address bar

To Access Your Personal Folders: 1. Open File Explorer 2. Click on This PC in the Navigation pane 3. Click on the desired folder under This PC to view its contents in the right pane

To Create a New Folder in File Explorer: 1. Click on the folder in the Navigation pane in which you are creating the new folder

2. Click on the Home tab, then click on New folder in the New group 3. Type a valid name and press

To Copy Folders From One Folder to Another: 1. Select the folders to copy, then click on Copy in the Clipboard group on the Home tab 2. Navigate to the destination folder, then click on Paste in the Clipboard group on the Home tab

To Move Folders From One Location to Another: 1. Select the folders to move 2. Click on Cut in the Clipboard group on the Home tab 3. Navigate to the destination folder 4. Click on Paste in the Clipboard group on the Home tab

To Rename a Folder: 1. Click on the folder to select it 2. Click on Rename in the Organise group on the Home tab 3. Type the new name and press

To Delete a Folder: • Select the folder, press and click on [Yes] (if asked), or • Right-click on the folder and select Delete, or

• Select the folder, then click on Delete in the Organise group

To See the Formal File or Folder in the Address Bar: • Click on the icon just to the left of the address in the Address bar

To Change the Way You View Folders in File Explorer: 1. Click on the View tab 2. Click on the desired view in the Layout gallery

Chapter 7: Working With Files

To Explore Files in Windows: • Click on File Explorer in the taskbar on the desktop, or • Type File in the Search… bar, then click on File Explorer

To Copy a File in File Explorer: 1. Click on the file to select it 2. Click on the Home tab, then click on Copy to in the Organise group 3. Click on the desired folder or click on Choose location to paste the copy in a different location

To Rename a File in File Explorer: 1. Click on the file to select it 2. Click on the Home tab, then click on Rename in the Organise group 3. Type the new name and press

To Select Files: 1. Click on a file to select it – this also cancels previous selections 2. To select non-contiguous files, hold down while clicking on files to select

3. Use the key to select contiguous files

To Copy Multiple Files: 1. Use or to select the files 2. Click on the Home tab, then click on Copy in the Clipboard group 3. Navigate to the destination folder 4. Click on the Home tab, then click on Paste in the Clipboard group

To Move Files Using the Mouse: 1. Select the file or files to be moved using normal selection techniques 2. Hold down the left mouse button over the selection, and drag the files to the destination folder

To Copy Files Onto a USB Flash Drive: 1. Select the file/s to be copied, then click on the Home tab 2. Click on Copy to, then select Choose location 3. Click on the USB flash drive, then click on [Copy]

To View File Attributes: 1. Open File Explorer and navigate to the file 2. Click on the Home tab 3. Click on the top half of Properties in the Open group

To Delete One or More Files: 1. Select the file or files to be deleted using the normal selection techniques 2. Press 3. Click on [Yes] if required

To Delete a Folder Containing Files: 1. Click on the folder to select it 2. Press 3. Click on [Yes] if required

Chapter 8: The Recycle Bin

To Send Files to the Recycle Bin: 1. Select the file or files to be deleted 2. Press and click on [Yes] to confirm the deletion if required Note: If you’re deleting files and folders from a network drive or folder, these items will not be moved into the Recycle Bin. Rather, they will be deleted permanently, so beware! This is because the Recycle Bin is stored on your computer’s local hard disk. If you’ve discovered that you have deleted files in error from a network drive or folder, contact IT Service Desk, as they may be able to recover the deleted files.

To Restore Items From the Recycle Bin: 1. Double-click on the Recycle Bin icon on the desktop 2. Click on the item to restore 3. Click on the Recycle Bin Tools: Manage tab, then click on Restore the selected items in the Restore group

To Delete Items From the Recycle Bin: • Select the item/s, press and click on [Yes] To empty the Recycle Bin: • Click on the Recycle Bin Tools: Manage tab, click on Empty Recycle Bin, then click on [Yes]

Chapter 9: Quick Access Locations

To Add a Location to Quick Access: 1. Navigate to the location in the Navigation pane 2. Right click on the location and select Pin to Quick access

To Remove a Quick Access Shortcut:

1. Right-click on the shortcut in the Navigation pane 2. Select Unpin from Quick access

Chapter 10: Searching and Sorting Files

To Search an Unindexed Folder: 1. Open File Explorer, then navigate to and open the required folder 2. Start typing the file name (or part of the file name) in the Search box in the top right corner of the window

To Search Contents Across All Unindexed Files: 1. Click in the Search box 2. Click on the Search Tools: Search tab 3. Click on Advanced options in the Options group 4. Select File contents

To Add Properties to a File: 1. Click on the View tab, then click on Details pane in the Panes group to display the Details pane 2. Click on the file to select it 3. Type a tag, keyword, genre, category, and so on, and click on [Save]

To Sort a File Listing in File Explorer: 1. Click on the desired heading to sort it by that category 2. Click on the same heading to reverse the sort order

To Modify Folder Viewing Options in File Explorer: 1. Click on the View tab, then click on the top half of Options 2. Click on the View tab and adjust the settings as desired 3. Click on [Apply]

Chapter 11: Printing

To View Available Printers:

1. Click in the Search… bar and type Control 2. Click on Control Panel, then View Devices and Printers To check the status of a printer: • Click on the printer to select it and view the details in the Status bar

To Print Files From File Explorer: 1. Navigate to and select the file/s to print 2. Click on the Share tab, then click on Print in the Send group

To Launch Microsoft Edge:

• In the taskbar, click on Microsoft Edge , or • Click in the taskbar Search bar, type edge, then click on Microsoft Edge

To Browse the Web With Microsoft Edge: 1. Type a search term in the Search…bar 2. Press 3. Click on the required link to display the webpage

To View the Hub: • Click on Hub To add favourites to the Hub: • Navigate to the required website • Click on Add to Favourites • Click on [Add]

To Use Web Notes:

1. Click on Make a Web Note in the toolbar

2. Select an option in the Web Notes toolbar 3. Click and drag on the page 4. Click on Save or Share and select the required options

Chapter 15: Backing Up and Restoring Data

To Copy a Folder From One Location to Another: 1. Navigate to the location that contains the folder you want to copy 2. Right-click on the folder in the right pane and select Copy 3. Navigate to and right-click on the destination folder and select Paste

To Set Up File History: 1. Click in the taskbar Search… bar, type file history, then click on File History in the search results 2. Click on [Turn on] if necessary 3. Set other options as desired

To Perform a Manual Backup: 1. Attach an external storage device or ensure you have access to the network location 2. Click in the Search… bar, type file history, then click on File History 3. Click on Run now

To Restore Files From a Backup: 1. Click in the Search… bar, type file history, then click on Restore your files

with File History in the search results pane 2. Click on Previous version until you locate the desired version, then select the files or folders 3. Click on Restore to original location

Chapter 16: Optimising Windows

To Display the System Window: 1. Click on taskbar Search… bar and type system 2. Click on System

To Re-Arrange the Desktop Icons: 1. Right-click on a blank area of the Desktop to display a shortcut menu 2. Select View, then select the appropriate option

To Perform a Disk Clean Up: 1. In the taskbar Search… bar type disk 2. Click on Disk Clean-up 3. Tick the options to delete 4. Click on [OK]

To Change a Power Plan in Windows 10: 1. Click in the taskbar Search… bar, type power option, then click on Power & sleep settings in the search results 2. Click on the desired power plan
