Nov. 22, 2020 Welcome to All Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 22, 2020 Page 2

Roman

Pope Pius XI instituted the Feast of Christ the King in his Quas primas of 1925, in response to growing secularism and nationalism, and in the context of the unreolved Roman Question. The title of the feast was "Domini Nostri Jesu Christi Regis" ([of] Our Lord Jesus Christ the King), and the date was established as "the last Sunday of the month of October – the Sunday, that is, which immediately precedes the Feast of All Saints". In John XXIII's revision of the calendar in 1960, the date and title were unchanged but, according to the simplification of the ranking of feasts, it was classified as a feast of the first class. In his of 1969, Pope Paul VI amended the title of the Feast to "D. N. Iesu Christi universorum Regis" (Our Lord Jesus Christ King of the Universe). He also moved it to the new date of the final Sunday of the , before the com- mencement of a new liturgical year on the First Sunday of (the earliest date for which is 27 November). Through this choice of date the eschatological importance of this Sunday is made clearer". He assigned to it the highest rank of "solemnity". In 2020, the Solemnity day falls on 22 November. The liturgical for the day are colored white or gold, in keeping with other joyous feasts honoring Christ. In the extraordinary form, as happens with all Sundays whose liturgies are replaced by those of important feasts, the prayers of the Sunday on which the celebration of the feast of Christ the King occurs are used on the ferias (weekdays) of the following week. The Sunday liturgy is thus not totally omitted. In 2020, the Solemnity day falls on 25 October for those using the former calendar. November 22, 2020 Page 3 We thank you Lord. Accept our thanksgiving on this day. FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING: We pray and give you thanks through Jesus NOVEMBER 22, 2020 Christ our Lord. Amen

Pilate asks Jesus if he is a king. Jesus May God Bless Us All, explains that His kingdom is not of this Fr. Sam world. Pilate asks again if Jesus is a king, to which he replies, “ I came into the world to Pastor’s Pun: Q : What do you call the age of testify to the truth. Anyone committed to the a pilgrim? truth hears my voice.” Pilgrimage

On this Feast of Christ the King, we are reminded of our primary focus as a Church: to serve the Lord as we serve His People. Nourished by His Body and Blood and fortified for the journey, we soon close this Year of Faith with a renewed confidence in His sovereignty over all we do.

May Mary’s example of generous service inspire and direct our efforts as we proclaim, “Thy will be done now and forever.”

BLESSED MIGUEL AGUSTÍN PRO (1891-1927) November 23 Graham Greene’s classic The Power and the Glory immortalized Mexico’s persecuted Church of the 1920s. But photographs of Father Pro—arms outstretched to image Christ Crucified, kneeling in prayer be- fore the firing squad, crumpled dead on the ground—vividly, visually remind us that not long ago, not far away, the faith we take for granted cost everything! Born to a mining family, Miguel became a Jesuit and was sent to study Catholic labor movements in Belgium in preparation for evangelizing Mexico’s workers. But he returned to find a Mexico determined to annihilate Catholicism, and, like priests before him during Roman persecutions, England’s Reformation, and in China today, ministered secretly to an “underground Church” until apprehended and sentenced to the firing squad. In his final moments, Father Pro blessed his execution- ers, forgave his enemies, and shouted: “Viva el Cristo Rey!—Long Live Christ the King!”—his defiant, dying proclamation of ultimate, transcendent loyalty. Father Pro’s martyrdom reinvigorated that beleaguered Church, whose countless faithful, never again afraid, would throng John Paul II when he visited Pro’s be- loved Mexico fifty-two years later. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. THANKSGIVING One act of thanksgiving, when things go wrong with us, is worth a thousand thanks when things are agreeable to our inclinations. —Saint John of Ávila

START WITH GRATITUDE Gratitude is the inward feeling of kindness received. Thankfulness is the natural impulse to express that feeling. Thanksgiving is the following of that impulse. —Henry Van Dyke
