ATTI'^ TRFATMFNT I IRRARY PRnGRFRS RFPORT Ffrrhary 1988

Background

The AIDS Treatment Library (ATI) project was initiated in September of 1987 with the objective of informing people with AIDS, ARC, and HIV positive test results about treatment options. The premise of the project is that a significant portion of people with AIDS want to take an aggressive position in fighting the illness. As a result, they desire information about approaches and treatments not always available through the traditional . They desire current information about AIDS research, about alternative treatments, about experimental treatments, and about research findings and treatments in other countries.

Early in the planning process, the ATI Planning Group recognized that people with AIDS and ARC are operating under the time constraint that their illness may place upon them. Formulating, funding, and developing an elaborate, central alternative treatment library could be expected to be a lengthy process; one that would delay information from reaching the audience it was intended to serve.

In response to the need for dissemination of alternative treatment information on a timely, accessible basis, the ATI Planning Group focussed on development of a network of mini- libraries, to be placed in locations throughout the community. The initial goal was to establish a minimum of two mini-1ibraries within the Bay Area. To date, the project's accomplishments have exceeded expectations: six mini-1ibraries and one master library copy have been produced during this six month pilot phase of the project.

The library has been initiated, developed, and disseminated by the members of the ATI Planning Group, who have operated and organized the ATI mini-library system on a volunteer basis.

Library Content

The content of the prototype for the mini-1ibrary was selected, organized, and indexed by John S. James. James' series of articles on alternative treatments in the Sentinel have made a significant contribution to community understanding of treatment options for AIDS and ARC. Since April of 1985, John James has researched, produced, and distributed the bi-weekly publication, AIDS Treatment News, which provides information gained from medical journals, interviews with scientists, physicians, and other health practitioners, and persons with AIDS or ARC. AIDS Treatment News also examines the ethical and public- policy issues around AIDS treatment research.

The ATL mini-libraries consist of materials organized by subject matter into six binders. The following areas of information are included:

- AmFAR Directory of Experimental Treatments for AIDS and ARC, published by the American Foundation for AIDS Research

- Abstracts of the Third International AIDS Conference, Washington, D.C., June, 1987

- Treatment Possibilities #1: Antabuse/DTC, BHT, Coenzyme Q, Chinese Herbs, Lentinan AIDS Treatment Library Progress Report 2

- Treatment Possibilities #2: Treatment For Cryptococcal Meningitis, Kaposi's Sarcoma, MAI, Pneumocystis, Toxoplasmosis

- Indexed set of back issues of AIDS Treatment News

- Information on AL 721 (currently in the process of being updated; available as part of the mini-library at Different Light, Eureka/Harvey Milk Public Library, and HABC)

It is recognized that as new treatment alternatives and research findings emerge, the content of the mini-library will require updating on a periodic basis. The tentative schedule for updating library contents is estimated at three month intervals. The aids Treatment RIini-Librarifs

criteria for site selection

The ATL Planning Group identified the following criteria for selection of "ideal" mini- library sites:

H = Willingness of the site to house the library and provide adequate space for five to six binders.

SS = Space/seating so that library users may take time to go over the materials. X = A xerox machine so that library users may duplicate materials of interest. A = Good public access.

~ Willingness of the site to supervise materials. C = Site has volume of clients who may be in a high risk category for AIDS, ARC, and HIV positive testing.

Note that the sites selected for this pilot phase of the project meet the established criteria in varying degrees. As part of the ATL assessment process, the ATL Planning Group will be assessing the viability of current ATL sites, and will refine the criteria for site selection.

ATL mini-libraries are currently in place at the following locations. The code offered after each selection criterion noted above is used below to offer descriptors for each site.

Placement of one remaining mini-library during this pilot phase of the project is now pending. The site will be selected from among the requests the AIL Planning Group has received (see below).

PROMOTlON/flllTRFAr.H

A promotional flyer, explaining the AIL min-library system, was distributed by mail to over forty sites in San Francisco and the East Bay, accompanied by a cover letter en¬ couraging those sites to post the flyer for their clients' information. Types of organizations receiving the flyer include: health food stores, bookstores, herbal stores, coffee houses, community health centers, Y's, and AIDS organizations. Copies of the flyer were also left for distribution at the original two mini-library sites.

Advertisements announcing the ATI mini-libraries were placed on a no-cost basis in Healing AIDS, and in the East Bay Express.

Natiqnai and I ncAi Interest In Thf ATI Mini-I trrary System

In October of 1987, ATL placed "A Call For Volunteers" notice in AIDS Treatment News, soliciting volunteer help with the AIDS Treatment Library in the San Francisco Bay Area. The notice generated an unexpected response, demonstrating interest in the AIDS Treatment Library concept on a national level. Letters were received from Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Baltimore, Dallas, and Anchorage. The letters communicated the difficulty of obtaining alternative treatment information; the need for this type of information within their communities; and a willingness to assist with such an effort.

During this pilot phase, the ATL Planning Group's objective was to focus on the target audience in the San Francisco Bay Area. As a result, all correspondents outside of the area received a letter encouraging them to initiate a similar project in their communities, accompanied by a two-page project description to aid them in their planning process.

On a local level, the ATL Planning Group has received written requests for mini-1ibraries from ten organizations. As noted earlier, the site for the remaining mini-library will be selected from among these requests. All of those requesting mini-libraries have received letters explaining that demand has far exceeded our current resources during this pilot phase, and that they will be informed of the progress of our evaluation process, an of decisions concerning project development.

Fvai iiATinN/NEXT .Steps

The ATL Planning Group is now in the process of assessing the mini-library system before initiating any additional libraries or continuing project development. Simple checklist evaluation sheets, with additional sheets for users' comments, have been placed in all mini-library binders as part of the evaluation process. The sheets are pulled and AIDS Treatment Library Progress Report A

tallied at one month intervals.

The evaluation will include:

- Evaluation of the effectiveness of our current site selections in client terms of accessibility, and level of client use. - Assessment of the usefulness of the contents of the mini-libraries, based on evaluation by our client population.

- Assessment of the capabilities of the AIL Planning Group to update mini-libraries on a periodic basis, and to respond to local and national demand.

- Assessment of the willingness and capability of potential mini-library sites to subsidize costs for the mini-1ibrary. FUNDI NG RnnRrps/RimsTnTyATioN The following organizations and individuals have contributed the resources to make pilot phase possible: this

Jarrow L. Rogovin Donation of $500 in memory of his friend of five years, Zachary Fried John S. The HABC serves as ATI's non-profit umbrella organization, enabling ATL to accept tax deductible donations. During this pilot phase, HABC has also provided a mailing address and bookkeeping services for the ATL project. In January of 1988, the Healing Alternative Buyers Club opened offices at 273 Church Street in San Francisco. As part of that space, the HABC will be tensive AIDS Treatment developing an ex¬ Library which will offer information about the options available. range of treatment Those interested in the AIDS Treatment to visit this "main" Library system are encouraged branch of the AIDS Treatment Library.

Once it has completed its assessment process, the ATL Planning Group will work with HABC to formulate a closely plan for continued project development.

Report prepared by Catherine McEver Dear Lewin,

Please find attached a list of books that I think you should consider for the library. The retail total for the entire list is $731.74. If I ordered any or, all through the Flanetree account it would be discounted anywhere from 20 - 40% then, you'd have to add SF tax. For $731.74, the discount would bring it down to between $585.39 to $439.86 (plus, tax).

Let me know as soon as you can if you would 1 ike to order any of these. 1 do ordering for Flanetree about once every two months; 1 am hoping to do an order in August - the latest would be early September. My home number is it's more convenient ... 751-8327 and work is 923-3681.

Best wishes as always.
