0131 476 6500 GEORGE GOLDSMITH 2012/13 83 dreaming about fishing By Tom Fort “...But fish there must be; without the fish the dream is something else.”

84 GEORGE GOLDSMITH 2012/13 www.georgegoldsmith.com dreaming reaming about fishing is the next best thing to fishing itself. We all doit– particularly when we sit down with our diaries and plan the intoxicating excursions about for the year ahead. These dreams may take us to a lonely sea-trout loch or some rocky Highland spate river; to the Spey or the Tay or the Tweed. The dreams are Drich and complex, and the part that fish play in them will vary. But fish there must be; without fishing the fish the dream is something else. Yet how often do we think about the fish – whether salmon, sea-trout or trout? About how they come to be there and the pressures on them? I am inviting you to spare a few moments to do just that, and to think about an organisation whose reason for being is to ensure that the day will never come when the dream dies. The Salmon and Trout Association is a charity that strives to defend and protect and enhance rivers and still-waters across this country so that they may continue to give joy and sport to this generation and generations to come. Much of the S and TA’s recent focus has been on challenging the impact of Scotland’s salmon-farming industry on salmon and sea-trout fisheries. Those who know and love the wild places of the west and north-west coast will not need telling how damaging this has been. Now, at long last – mainly thanks to the work of the S and TA’s lawyer Guy Linley-Adams – the farming industry is being forced to confront its record and look at ways to reform its practices. This kind of campaigning work – based on solid scientific research and authoritative lobbying – is essential. With the growing pressures on our aquatic environments in all parts of the country, there is a desperate need for more of it. But it does not come cheap. The S and TA needs more members to give it more muscle, and more money so it can campaign even more effectively. So if you are not a member of the Association I urge you to become one. Please go the website - www.salmon-trout.org - to get an idea of the work the Association does. It is a simple matter to join through the website. I would also ask you to consider making a donation to further the work of the Association. u
