Staff should address lack of custodians Of ull ihe things that studenls should be able to expect from their tuition dollars each semester, friendly attitudes, quality learning environments CAMPUS and access to technological resources should be among the items on the top of the list. But another thing that we deserve and that is apparently being overlooked in some areas of the university are clean bathrooms. There are certain places you don't expect bathrooms to be clean: Fast-food restaurants along the Interstate or rest areas are expected to be gross. That way, if they are clean, we can be pleasantly surprised. But in places where you've learned to expect a clean restroom, one that's dirty can come as quite a shock. This may not sound like a big deal, and we certainly don't want anyone to get the impression that unsanitary bathrooms are on the same level as the other things we mentioned, but after walking into a bathroom that smelled worse than a gas station's, Do you plan to get a flu with four unllushed toilets and with stuff smeared on the walls that we won't mention here, we feel that something needs to be said (which we hope will result in something being done). shot this winter? Now, we realize it isn't the fault of any custodian or administrator that there are still some 18- to 24-year-old individuals out there who apparently don't know what the little handle on the back of the toilet does. Nor is it their fault if someone still thinks it might be funny to smear something on the stalls in a bathroom, lurking there to make the next person who walks in the door gag and run out. And the particular bathroom we are referring to, located in the UC, wasn't dirty because of a slacking custodian, either. The Echo office is located in the UC, and we know for a fact that the person responsible for cleaning this building always does a thorough job in our office, which hasn't always been the case with previous custodians. That bathroom was most likely dirty because there just aren't enough custodians employed to adequately "No, I hate getting shots, clean each building on campus. plus every experience my A UTC administrator in facilities told The Echo staff a couple of years ago that the people employed to clean at UTC were having to clean family has had with flu more square feet in one day than they should have because sufficient funding wasn't there to hire more. But that's been two years ago, and it shots has been bad." seems to us that some custodians are still working their tails off and still can't quite keep up with the pace that things get dirty in an environment with thousands of people walking through it. It isn't just about dirty bathrooms, either; we've all walked by a spilled container of ketchup on — Ashley Jones, the floor that has becrv there long enough to harden or an overflowing garbage can. But it's not because custodians aren't doing their jobs, it's Cleveland, Tenn., because they have so much to do that they absolutely can't get it all done alone. sophomore This problem needs to be dealt with not only because we as students deserve a better environment, but because potential students who come to campus as visitors aren't going to be too excited about coming to a school with dried ketchup on the floors and bathrooms that look like the ones at Captain D's. Chuck Cantrell, assistant vice chancellor of university relations, told an Echo reporter this week that 60 percent of students make a decision about where to come to college based on the campus' appearance, but we don't think unflushed toilets are going "I would, but I can't afford to sway anyone toward UTC. it.
