    THE ESTATE OF MENDACITY: AN INTERPRETATION OF WILLIAMS’S MOST AMBIGUOUS CHARACTER by CREED BOWLEN B.A. University of Alabama at Birmingham, 2002 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts in the Department of Theatre in the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Central Florida Orlando, Florida Spring Term 2010 © 2008 Daniel Creed Bowlen ii ABSTRACT I performed the role of Brick Pollitt at Lake Mirror Theatre in Lakeland, Florida from April 20- April 30 2006. The role of Brick Pollitt provided me with several acting challenges as well as multiple subjects to research. The most challenging aspects of portraying the character of Brick Pollitt are his alcoholism, issues of sexuality, and tormented familial relationships. Brick Pollitt journeys in the period of one day through major challenges in two key relationships. He moves from dominance in his relationship with Maggie to capitulation and from isolation in his relationship with Big Daddy to mutual understanding. Brick’s relationships are further complicated by questions surrounding his recently deceased best friend Skipper and drives (alcoholism) that may be perceived as self destructive. My preliminary work has led me to believe Brick is in search of peace (‘the click’) in a tormented life (Williams, Cat 2.47). The nature of the torment needs further research for definition. Some critics argue Brick’s sexuality is ambivalent, and he is repressing homosexual drives. Equally possible is arguing the homosexuality was restricted to Skipper. Making a decision about the definition of this relationship is key to making choices within the play because the friendship was so important to Brick’s perception of himself.

    2018-2019 ANNUAL REPORT 1 MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT Vestavia Hills City Schools has completed another exciting chapter in its rich tradition. The aspiration for high performance has been evident from the birth of our school system in 1970 and continues today. While revising the goals in our new strategic plan this spring, we reflected on the defining moments of our system that were integral to its success. A look back at the history of our school system is to see one that grew through many changes and maintained its stellar reputation. Today, Vestavia Hills traverses from the Sybil Temple, through Cahaba Heights, and to the farthest reaches of Liberty Park. As unique as each part of our city is, there is something special that unites all of us. For the past year, our central office leadership team has been studying organizations that are perpetually high performers in their respective fields. Each has its own distinct strategy based on what their customers want. All of them, however, share the common ingredient of having a vibrant and healthy culture. Employees love to be a part of this type of organization, and their customers know it. The effective confluence of strategy and culture is the recipe for long-term success in any organization. Management guru Peter Drucker distinguished between the two, however, when he said, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” He recognized that both were essential to success, but the results of a good strategy are short-lived if the culture is unhealthy. After having spent a full year as superintendent in this wonderful system, it is obvious to me that the binding agent in our community is the culture of excellence in each of our schools.

Webster , Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Abstract : The author explores the issue of urban coyotes and coyote management from a cat owner’s perspective, with specific examples from Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Following a personal encounter with two coyotes in July 2005 that led to the death of a cat, the author has delved into the history of Vancouver’s “Co-existing with Coyotes”, a government-funded program run by a non- profit ecological society. The policy’s roots in conservation biology, the environmental movement, and the human dimensions branch of wildlife management are documented. The author contends that “Co-existing with Coyotes” puts people and pets at greater risk of attack by its inadequate response to habituated coyotes, and by an educational component that misrepresents real dangers and offers unworkable advice.
