Missing Cats, Stray Coyotes: One Citizen’s Perspective * Judith C. Webster , Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Abstract : The author explores the issue of urban coyotes and coyote management from a cat owner’s perspective, with specific examples from Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Following a personal encounter with two coyotes in July 2005 that led to the death of a cat, the author has delved into the history of Vancouver’s “Co-existing with Coyotes”, a government-funded program run by a non- profit ecological society. The policy’s roots in conservation biology, the environmental movement, and the human dimensions branch of wildlife management are documented. The author contends that “Co-existing with Coyotes” puts people and pets at greater risk of attack by its inadequate response to habituated coyotes, and by an educational component that misrepresents real dangers and offers unworkable advice. -

CUPID “Botched Makeover” TEASER FADE IN: INT. SINGLES SESSION
CUPID “Botched Makeover” TEASER FADE IN: 1 INT. SINGLES SESSION ROOM - NIGHT 1 The GROUP listens attentively while TOM CAIGHNE, gorgeous in a former Phi Delt rush captain sort of way, speaks. PRISCILLA and other female group members are getting a little misty. The guys listen to this with a bit more skepticism. TOM ... She was always saying how she wanted a yellow lab puppy. She even had a name picked out -- Barnaby. And I thought, you know, what a great three-months-of- dating gift. So I show up to her house. I knock... (beat, this is difficult) ... and her ex-boyfriend answers in a towel. Priscilla shakes her head: “that evil bitch.” CLAIRE’S expression tells us she may not be buying this. TOM It was just so... post-sex. You know? (he pauses dramatically) Barnaby’s seventy pounds now, and I know my apartment isn’t a great place for him. But what can I do? I love the guy. (shrugs) I guess I’m just afraid to get back out there... afraid of getting hurt. Sympathetic female faces. Except for previously unknown group member DAPHNE. She’s pissed. DAPHNE I’m sorry, but I can’t take this anymore. That is the biggest, heaviest, densest load of crap I have ever heard. Audible GASPS from the group. TREVOR’S eyes flicker. CLAIRE Uh, Daphne, we’ve talked about “respectful listening...” (CONTINUED) "Botched Makeover" #114 Revised (pink) 1/15/99 2. 1 CONTINUED: 1 DAPHNE I listened respectfully when he told me he couldn’t wait for me to meet his parents. -
Effeminacy and Expertise, Excess and Equality
Effeminacy and Expertise, Excess and Equality: Gay Best Friends as Consumers and Commodities in Contemporary Television © Copyrighted Material Introduction: Selling and Buying the Gay Best Friend Chapter 7 In December 2003 Vanity Fair Heat Wave’. Featuring the stars of American series Will & Grace Queer Eye for the Straight Guy cover celebrated what seemed a milestone in mainstream media: at least nine gay-centric television shows in prime time, in a period of unprecedentedSusie Khamis and Anthony Lambert visibility for gay and lesbian characters and personalities. This was, to a certain extent, an unexpected side effect of the cultural focus on gay men after the spread of AIDS in the West in the 1980s: While the AIDS crisis claimed many lives, it served as a catalyst to open conversations about sexuality and gender that had heretofore been difficult if not impossible and, consequently, the turn of the millennium ushered in a newfound examination of what had been defined as ‘‘gay,’’ and perhaps not so positively, this queered space began to make ‘‘gay’’ a commodity. Interestingly, it would only be 10 years after the height of the AIDS crisis in America that magazine dedicated its front cover to ‘TV’s Gay © 2015 the number one television sit-com would highlight the lives of two ‘‘gay’’ men (2003–2007) and From Alison Hulme (ed.), Consumerismand two ‘‘straight’’on TV: Popularwomen (all whiteMedia and from‘‘upper-middle-class’’) the 1950s to in thea manner Present , published by Ashgate Publishing.that captured See: many http://www.ashgate.com/isbn/9781472447562 of the stereotypes historically associated with gays and the women who adore them (Poole, 2014: 280). -

_____________________________________________________________________ Wild Profusions: An Ode to Academic Hair Mitchell McLarnon, McGill University Carl Leggo, University of British Columbia Anita Sinner, Concordia University Abstract: With the intention of expanding educational conversations through playful encounters, we braid curricular intensities inspired by wild profusions, written in our academic hair and offered as expressions of life writing. Through our hairatives, we share discomforts and provocations that are the stories of our scholarly identities, rooted in the body-word nexus as affective attunements. Through our entanglements, we map our networks of relations and invite curricular conductivity concerning how and why hair is formative in the context of the academy. Living on the precarious margins of stories, we share our narratives within the folds of educational theory to passionately and poetically render our richly textured events as the moments of knowledge creation. In this way, our hair serves as an artistic configuration, where we are manifest in “situated inquiry about the truth that it locally actualises”, to borrow from Badiou (2005), opening what may be described as an “eventual rupture” of our scholarly truths (p. 12). Our ruminations are the imaginaries of academics, or simply living intensities. We intend to crack open from the inside that which is “a reality concealed behind appearances” in an attempt to reconfigure “a different regime of perception and signification” (Rancière, 2009, pp. 48, 49). Keywords: curriculum studies; hair; social theory; educational theory; life writing; arts-informed inquiry _______________________________________________________________ 70 Journal of the Canadian Association for Curriculum Studies (JCACS) Volume 16, Number 1, 2018 McLarnon, Leggo &Sinner Photo by Seonjeong Yi (n.d.). -
COSMETIC SURGERY and the TELEVISUAL MAKEOVER a Foucauldian Feminist Reading
COSMETIC SURGERY AND THE TELEVISUAL MAKEOVER A Foucauldian feminist reading Cressida J. Heyes I argue that the televisual cosmetic surgical makeover is usefully understood as a contemporary manifestation of normalization, in Foucault’s sense—a process of defining a population in relation to its conformity or deviance from a norm, while simultaneously generating narratives of individual authenticity. Drawing on detailed analysis of “Extreme Makeover,” I suggest that the show erases its complicity with creating homogeneous bodies by representing cosmetic surgery as enabling of personal transformation through its narratives of intrinsic motivation and authentic becoming, and its deployment of fairy tale tropes. Introduction This essay aims to show how representations of cosmetic surgery have contributed to the evolution of a contemporary discourse in which one’s body must be made to represent one’s character. Within this discourse cosmetic surgery is not simply conceived as a technology that allows one to become more beautiful, or even achieve normalcy, but as a vehicle for self-transformation. This form of representation is becoming quite widespread across the different contexts in which cosmetic surgery is marketed, as other interpreters have suggested (e.g., Covino 2004; Fraser 2003a; Jones 2006), but it takes a particularly striking form in the recent genre of the televisual cosmetic surgical makeover. TV shows such as Extreme Makeover (US and UK editions), The Swan, Ten Years Younger, and numerous other more local versions, offer a scripted narrative of identity becoming in which the ordinary individual is aesthetically dramatically and rapidly transformed, while also making over her life and coming better to embody the virtuous person she allegedly truly is. -
