• The Meaning of

“The Source of life and of Salvation from despair and the condition for the existence of the whole world is contained in only these three words: ‘The Word became Flesh’ [John 1:14]” (Feodor Dostoevsky, The Possessed drafts)

The question, “What does Christmas mean?” has as many answers as people in our society. Oppor- tunity for merchants, vacation days for school children, parties and exchange of gifts even for non-Christians, since it had become a national holiday even in a nation that forbids official recognition. All including Christians, even Orthodox Christians, define the event by their own understanding, and by doing so limit the meaning of Christmas. There can be no definition, be- cause the birth of the Son of God transcends every attempt to explain the inexplicable or com- prehend the incomprehensible. We can only thank the Holy Trinity for the nativity of the Messiah and celebrate His life on earth.

Christmas is a mystery, a glorious event in history, the awesome phenomenon when “Christ Who, being in the very nature of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bond-servant and coming in the likeness of men…” (Philippians 2:5). The kenotic condescension of the Holy Trinity expressed by the evange- list John, “The Word became flesh,” can only be explained by the word “love.” Such a divine love for human beings transcends the ability to grasp with our limited capacity, which is why the Or- thodox Church services for this season, filled with joy, wonder and gratitude, point to the in- explicable event without even trying to elucidate the wonder.

“Heaven and earth join in celebration…Wise men and shepherds welcome Him…Angels and humans sing with joy…” The glorious hymn of laudation: “God is with us!” requires an explanation, because that phrase has been misused, wrongly applied and abused by some Christians through the ages. What it does not mean is that God endorses a nation or purpose against His other children. Christ appears on earth as the most precious Gift that we cannot hope to recompense, certainly never earn or comprehend. Why does God love us so much, and how can we repay Him? Nobody, not even the Lord Almighty, offers gifts without expecting something in return. We know there is nothing we have as our own except the present of freedom. We are not robots, and even if “our days are like grass…” (Psalm 103:15), nevertheless, in our brief life span we have time to con- sider the gift of life and the Source of life. We can come to the realization that this lifetime may be short, but the promise of the gift of eternity is part of the reason for the incarnation of the Son of God. Salvation is Christ’s purpose for His birth. Christ is life, and yet He died so that we might share eternal life with Him. Yet another mystery.

He offers us life everlasting, but He does not insist we accept it—or Him. He “stands at the door and knocks,” but it is for us to open to Him or leave Him outside. Such respect is almost too much; however, He treats us with a freedom that we feel we do not deserve or that we may not appreciate. We throw away our freedom with excess of passions, with some form of addiction to drugs, alcohol, overindulgence, wallowing in despair or foolish behavior—and Jesus remains standing outside the door of our heart, patiently waiting to be invited inside. How can He love us that much?

LETTER FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL PRESIDENT

Dear Parishioners, As I begin the December letter, I think about all that the Church has been through this year. 2020 started out on a very positive note, with a successful New Year’s Eve Dinner Dance that helped bring the community to- gether. Then we were hit with the Covid-19 issues. The Church had to be closed to keep everyone safe and the liturgy was performed with just Father and a Chanter. As the Covid numbers started to decline the Church was re-opened with limited seating following the strict safety guidelines provided by the Metropolis.

These same safety guidelines also meant that other activities had to be curtailed, such as Coffee Hour, Sun- day School and Greek School, as well as the fund-raising activities that would have been held on a regular ba- sis.

We could have thought of these limitations as a blow to the finances of the Church, however it forced a new way of thinking about fund raising. Instead of Dinner Dances, monthly carry out meals were started. Once so- cial distancing rules were relaxed, a rummage sale was held. Then the big question of what to do about the Festival forced the committee to think outside the box and hold a Drive Through Festival. The Golf tournament had to be moved to the Fall, but it was still a big success.

We are very grateful of all the support that was received from the Parishioners, the Committees, and the sur- rounding communities to make these fundraisers a success!

The revenue from these events has helped keep the finances on track through the end of the year, however we still need to make up the difference in the revenue lost from not having a full Festival. Plans are being made to hold another Drive Through Festival, as well as some other unique events.

With the Christmas season now upon us, it is a time to reflect on all that we have to be thankful for and to look forward to the celebration of the birth of our Lord and the season for giving. Keeping this in mind, we remind all that have not completed their Stewardship pledge for this year to please take the time to make your offering today and enable our Church to continue to enhance the spiritual growth of the Orthodox Christians entrusted to our care.

Yours in Christ

Perry Koustenis

LETTER FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL TREASURER

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

As we enter the final month of this difficult year, I hope this letter finds you and your family in good health. We all have had to endure financial difficulties, health concerns and un- certainties of our personal and our nation’s future.

The Coronavirus has affected every business without exception including our beloved church; hence we have scheduled this upcoming General Assembly. Financial decisions must be made and requires a vote as a community. I am proud and appreciative of the efforts that many parishioners have made to keep our church afloat.

Our October Drive through Festival grossed over $85,000.00 for the three days and, af- ter expenses, netted approximately $41,000.00. The November Golf Tournament grossed $14,435.00 and, after expenses, we will net approximately $10,000.00. A complete, detailed financial summary will be in the December issue of The Voice.

Although these two events had great success, it is less than 50% of the $120,000.00 we netted from last year’s full festival. This loss, coupled with the loss and cancellation of most Hall events, leaves us in a difficult situation.

I look forward to seeing you at the General Assembly meeting on December 13th. If an- yone has any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact me.

With warm regards,

Chris L. Theodore Treasurer

DECEMBER 2020 CHAMPION NEWSLETTER

A note from Metropolitan Alexios - atlmetr

While we prepare ourselves for a Thanksgiving celebration that will be very different due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, on the 21st of November, the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple helps us focus on what it means to be truly thankful. This Thanksgiving will be very emo- tional since we cannot see many of our family members.

However, just as Joachim and Anna’s hearts were greatly saddened, they used their grief to inspire prayer. We too should follow their examples by making Thanksgiving a daily occurrence, with prayer, Liturgical attendance, and scriptural study. Lets focus on what God has given to us—like our health and our loved ones—and not just that we miss them during this pandemic, then Thanksgiving can be- come not only a day, but a common exchange, through which we give praise to God, for that which we are blessed to receive. Truly, it is my fervent hope that this Thanksgiving inspire in all of us more gratitude, strengthening ourselves and our loved ones, especially during these troubled days. In doing so, we may carry these feelings of thankfulness through the remainder of the Fast, through the Nativi- ty and the New Year, and indeed, each day of the rest of our lives.

I pray for and wish everyone a Blessed Thanksgiving. Many are dealing with a lot of stress in their lives and need our prayers. May we be thankful for what we do have such as our families and friends. We are together and with God, all is possible. Speedy recovery from this Covid Virus for all. Be Safe.

Love,

Linda Moustakis, Champion

16 The DOP was founded November 16, 1929. On November 14, EOS No.1 celebrated the 91st Anniversary of our Founding via Zoom between 10 am and 1 pm , so that Sisters from all around could participate. November is the month DOP celebrate 91 years of promoting Hellenism, Education, Civic Responsibility, Philanthropy, and Family & Individual Excellence.

Our Bake Sale which was on November 20th, turned out to be a huge success. Thank You to one and all for your donations of goodies and those who helped with setting up and working the Bake Sale. Could not have been done without you. We did comply with the current regulations that have been set due to the Pandemic. We are happy to be able to give a donation to Mercy Hospice.

Hopeful we will have our next meeting December 16th @ 1PM in the Hall Library. Usually we have a Christmas dinner with AHEPA, but to the current situation, this will be delayed to another time.

Tweets by @DOPHeadquarters . A good way to communicate with our Daughter of Penelope Sisters. Wishing you a most Blessed Thanksgiving and I pray we continue with all God's Blessings. Lets give thanks for what we have and are able to do.

17 American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) Local Myrtle Beach Chapter #498 On behalf of our local chapter membership, I extend warm and heartfelt greetings and well wishes for health, safety and happiness to all of our AHEPA Brothers in our St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox church community and to their ex- tended families, whether they may live here or elsewhere. I hope that you are all well and staying strong in these trying times. The year 2020 has indeed been challenging for our Fraternal Brotherhood, just as it has for many others, based on the challenges and restrictions of the COVID-19 virus pandemic. Regretfully, it appears that the pandemic impact will re- main upon us for a while longer. We must therefore keep moving forward in the best way that we can. Brotherly love and care for one another will get us through this. We are in this together, as it has already been said by many. Since September, we have attempted to restart our monthly meetings, but we have not been successful due to insuffi- cient attendance to satisfy quorum requirements for a formal meeting. Our chapter is now 27 members strong at this time; however, we only had nine of 27 in attendance at each attempted meeting in September-October-November. The last meeting attempt was on Thursday 11/5/2020. Our objective is that although we cannot formally meet, we will make every effort to remain in touch with our members (i.e. phone calls, emails, Zoom interactions) to assure social communi- cation, caring checks and assurance that if any help is needed among our brotherhood, it can be provided. Aside of this year’s challenges, we have remained focused on our mission of promoting Hellenism and doing our chari- table work (i.e. scholarships, church community, national and international commitments, etc.). Thank you to all, who supported, by your purchase, our this year’s AHEPA chapter fundraising effort of Grand Strand “Attractions Dining and Value Guide” Annual Coupons Book sales. This fundraiser earned an income of over $1600 for the chapter towards our charitable causes. AHEPA National Headquarters has shown interest and appreciation in the efforts of our chapter’s recent growth and activities. I am in frequent communication with our AHEPA Supreme President (George Horiates), who has personally expressed his appreciation and encouragement Respectfully, Jimmy Lambrinos Chapter 498 President
