Ritgerð til MA-prófs í íslenskum fræðum Ingibjörg Eyþórsdóttir Kt.: 201257-6039 Leiðbeinandi: Ármann Jakobsson Júní 2014 Ágrip: Ritgerð þessi hlaut Rannís-styrk á vegum verkefnisins „Tekist á við yfirnáttúruna á Íslandi á miðöldum“ sem dr. Ármann Jakobsson prófessor í íslenskum bókmenntum stýrir og hann var jafnframt leiðbeinandi við vinnslu hennar. Darraðarljóð eru galdra- og furðukvæði sem á engan sinn líka. Það hefur verið flokkað með eddukvæðum enda á það margt sameiginlegt með þeim en varðveislustaður þess hefur tengt það ákveðnum atburði sem varð á ákveðnum stað og stund. Kvæðið er að finna undir lok Brennu-Njáls sögu og er eingöngu varðveitt þar. Í sögunni er það kveðið á sama tíma og Brjánsbardagi fer fram, á föstudaginn langa árið 1014, við Clontarf skammt frá Dyflinni á Írlandi en kvæðið er kveðið í Skotlandi. Sjónarvottur er að öllu saman, maðurinn Dörruður, sem sér valkyrjur setja upp vef úr görnum manna, þær hafa mannshöfuð fyrir kljásteina og slá vefinn með vopnum, til sigurs ungum konungi, sem þær nefna í kvæðinu og því er beint gegn ríkum grami. Allur sá hluti sögunnar sem geymir kvæðið, Brjánsþáttur er fullur með yfirnáttúrlega atburði og furður svo hvergi innan Njálu er saman að jafna. Í þessari ritgerð verður kvæðið athugað frá mörgum sjónarhornum. Bragarhættir þess og efni verða tíunduð, staðsetning kvæðisins innan Njálu athuguð og grennslast fyrir um hvaða áhrif kristnar leiðslubókmenntir samtímans hafa haft á söguna. Nokkur önnur kvæði frá íslenskum miðöldum verða einnig athuguð útfrá svipuðum forsendum og spurt: hvenær er kvæði leiðsla og hvenær ekki? En hin goðsögulega fortíð kvæðisins er ekki síður forvitnileg – hvaðan eru minni þess sprottin, er forsaga kvæðisins norræn eða gelísk, hvort tveggja eða eru þau að einhverju leyti hluti af sameiginlegum evrópskum arfi? Vefnaðargaldur kvæðisins verður einnig athugaður og reynt að finna aðrar heimildir tengdar vefnaði og valkyrjum í norrænum sagnasjóði en einnig verður seilst víðar. Í kvæðinu opnast glufa inn í goðsögulega veröld eddukvæðanna, Dörruður sem er sjónarvottur að flutningi kvæðisins sér inn í annan heim, þar sem valkyrjur slá blóðugan vefninn og kveða konungi sínum sigur. 3 Efnisyfirlit: Formáli .................................................................................................................................. 5 1. Hún sýnir gamla konu á íslenskum búningi sem stendur framan við fortjald, áhorfandans eða okkar megin. Hún lyftir tjaldinu með vinstri hendi og afhjúpar ævintýraheim – sjálft kaosið: Við blasa draugar og drýslar, sæskrýmsli og uppvakningar og gott ef ekki sjálfur púkinn á fjósbitanum. Konan heldur á gamaldags kolu í hægri hendi og lýsir upp þennan töfraheim. Konan er öldruð en búningurinn staðsetur hana í nokkuð fjarlægum nútíma og hún er verðugur fulltrúi fyrir áa okkar og eddur sem hafa haldið uppi tjaldinu og veitt áheyrendum og lesendum aðgang að þessum ævintýraheimi öldum saman. Konan minnir á annað vitni, annan gluggagægi. Dörruður sá sem vitni varð að vefnaði og kveðskap Darraðarljóða stóð í svipuðum sporum, hann lyfti fortjaldi frá öðrum heimi; heimi heiðinna minna, seiðs, valkyrja og dísa, vætta stríðs og dauða – heimi sem sagnaheimur konunnar sprettur að einhverju leyti úr. Hér verður lítið fylgst með þeim furðum sem konan virðir fyrir sér þótt minnst verði á þjóðsögur tengdar efninu hér síðar, en þeim mun rækilegar verður reynt að greina það sem Dörruður sá inn um dyngjugluggann á föstudaginn langa árið 1014. * Ritgerð þessi hlaut Rannís-styrk í tengslum við verkefnið „Tekist á við yfirnáttúruna á Íslandi á miðöldum“ sem dr. Ármann Jakobsson prófessor í íslenskum bókmenntum stýrir og hann var jafnframt leiðbeinandi við vinnslu hennar. Ritgerðin skyldi með einhverju móti taka mið af umfjöllunarefninu „Leiðslur í íslenskum miðaldabókmenntum“ og undir lágu ýmsar tegundir af leiðslum í kristilegum trúarbókmenntum og/eða eddukvæðum og reynslan af hinu yfirnáttúrlega. Valið var að beina sjónum að Darraðarljóðum sem aðeins eru varðveitt undir lok Brennu-Njáls sögu og hafa verið flokkuð með eddukvæðum. Í rammfrásögn kvæðisins verður maður að nafni Dörruður vitni að einstæðum atburði, sem ættaður gæti verið aftan úr grárri forneskju, hann sér sýn sem er langt frá því að vera af kristilegum toga, þrátt 5 fyrir ritunartíma sögunnar seint á 13. öld. (Po chwili drzwi się otwierają, w ciemności widać najpierw tylko sylwetkę mężczyzny który wciąga dużą walizę na kółkach z hotelowymi nalepkami z całego świata. Zapala latarkę w komórce i szuka włącznika do światła. Szuka tego właściwego, ale najpierw zapala czerwony neon "Paradise” a potem do tego dochodzi migający napis „Escort Service". Widać teraz: rura do tańczenia, kanapy, z tyłu ekran telewizora, beamer i duży bałagan. Mężczyzna rozgląda się. Teraz widać go dokładnie: drobny facet w okularach, luźnym i drogim ubraniu . Typ zagubionego naukowca. Widzi ogień w kominku który zaczyna wygasać, więc dokłada drzewa. Otwiera wbudowaną szafę, pełną ubrań damskich. Wyciąga niektóre i ogląda. Otwiera walizę i wyciąga najpierw termos z kawą, potem whisky, zmęczony rzuca się na fotel. Otwierają się drzwi wejściowe i wchodzi mężczyzna w panterce i bronią myśliwską, zaskoczony).     Le seiðr des anciens Scandinaves et le noaidevuohta des Sâmes : aspects chamaniques et influences mutuelles Céline Leduc Thèse soumise à la Faculté des études supérieures et postdoctorales dans le cadre des exigences du programme de doctorat en philosophie en Sciences des religions Département des Études anciennes et des Sciences des religions Faculté des Arts Université d’Ottawa © Céline Leduc, Ottawa, Canada, 2015 Résumé La thèse analyse le rituel du seiðr (pratique utilisée entre autres pour la divination, la guérison et la guerre sur des plans surnaturels) des anciens Scandinaves et celui du noaidevuohta (rituel chamanique pratiqué par les Sâmes) chez les Sâmes. Le seiðr était pratiqué surtout par des femmes qui se déplaçaient d’une ferme à l’autre. Il était directement lié au dieu Óðinn, tel que décrit dans l’Ynglinga saga. Quant au noaidevuohta, apparemment l’apanage des hommes, il participait au complexe circumpolaire des chasseurs/éleveurs du renne ou du caribou. Les deux complexes rituels ont été intégrés dans leur culture respective, tout en possèdant des différences. Il est impossible, dans l’état actuel de la recherche, de déterminer s’il y a eu des emprunts de part et d’autre. Selon les conclusions de nos recherches, les deux rituels sont de nature chamanique, s’inscrivant au nouveau paradigme circumpolaire des études contemporaines. En revanche, il n’existe pas de consensus au sujet de la nature chamanique ou non, ni au sujet de l’origine, des rituels en question. Il y a très peu de recherches en langue française sur le sujet, la majorité des études ont été réalisées en langue anglaise ou dans des langues scandinaves.

Professor of English in the University of St Andrews PREFACE IT is generally agreed that the first six pieces included in this book are among the most interesting examples of Anglo-Saxon poetry which have come down to us; yet with one or two exceptions they have received comparatively little attention from English scholars. The Norse pieces which follow, are still less known in this country. They have all been translated into English before—one of them {the Darra^arlj6^) as far back as 1768; but most of these translations are in verse. Prose translations and commentaries are few in number, and are now practically inaccessible to the majority of students. Almost all the poems, both English and Norse, may be, and frequently are, described as 'lyrics,' though this de- scription is not strictly appropriate to their metrical form, except perhaps in the case of parts of Nos. VII, IX, and X. The general resemblance between the poems on the battle of Brunanburh (No. VI) and the battle of Hafsfjord (No. VIII) is obvious. But on the whole the reader will probably be struck by the absence of resemblance between the two sets of poems.

Williams1 When the word ‘valkyrie’ is heard, a particular motif emerges: A woman with long, blonde hair and blue eyes stands confidently wearing plated armour, carrying a spear or sword. and accompanied with a winged helmet or a winged horse (Figure 1). While this combination of attributes has come to constitute a valkyrie, its manifestation took several centuries, multiple authors from various nations, and artists of theatre, sculpture, and illustration to popularise the motif to its current scale. This article seeks to briefly explore the development of the valkyrie from its earliest depictions in Viking Age through to the twenty-first century. This exploration will utilise various depictions and social contexts for the valkyrie in effort to discern how the above image is now considered standard in western popular thought. To gain an adequate scope of the character’s development through history, brief case studies will include a combination of both text and imagery. These sources will be analysed to illuminate the character’s attributes described by the authors and artists through the signs and symbols they chose. Secondarily, questions from reception theory will be used to hypothesize how the communities encountering the valkyrie in their cultural narratives understood and were impacted by this character. These brief case studies include texts and imagery from the following periods: 1) Viking Age and medieval Scandinavia and British Isles; 2) the Pan- Scandinavian movement and Romantic era in northern Europe; and 3) the popular culture of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries in the United States of America.2 It is only for the sake 1Lindsey K Williams is a recent graduate of the Art in the Global Middle Ages program at the University of Edinburgh.

    “Helzt þóttumk nú heima í millim...” 121 MIRIAM MAYBURD “Helzt þóttumk nú heima í millim...” A reassessment of Hervör in light of seiðr’s supernatural gender dynamics Introduction Hervarar saga ok Heiðreks, a fornaldarsaga whose oldest extant Icelan- dic manuscript dates to the first decade of the fourteenth century, had excited imaginations of early modern antiquarians, poets, and Romantic nationalists with its tapestry of Danish legendary matter (Fell 1996), but it was not until the end of 20th century – amid the ascent of gender- focused scholarship – that the relatively brief section in the saga concern- ing Hervör Bjarmarsdóttir started to attract critical attention of its own.     The book of Gods,Goddessess,Heroes and other Characters of Mythology In broad terms mythology is composed of traditional stories about gods, kings, and heroes. Myths often tell about the creation of the world (and about its destruction as well), about the creation of men, and, also, they provide lessons on a moral code by which to live. They were attempts to provide rationale to natural events and to human emotion. Mythological stories generally were passed on orally from generation to succeeding generation. Each tale, embellished and "corrupted" through the re-tellings, was probably a reasoned explanation of the facts as seen by unsophisticated and uneducated eyes. Most scholars today divide the subject into three categories: pure myth (primitive science and primitive religion), heroic saga (primitive history), and folklore (fictional stories). Mythological Characters WorldWide African Mythological Characters NOTE 1: Almost all African peoples believed in a supreme god who created the universe and all within it; this belief pre-dated the infiltration of the Christian or Islamic religions.
