EPIC AND ROMANCE ESSAYS ON MEDIEVAL LITERATURE W. P. KER PREFACE These essays are intended as a general description of some of the principal forms of narrative literature in the Middle Ages, and as a review of some of the more interesting works in each period. It is hardly necessary to say that the conclusion is one "in which nothing is concluded," and that whole tracts of literature have been barely touched on--the English metrical romances, the Middle High German poems, the ballads, Northern and Southern--which would require to be considered in any systematic treatment of this part of history. Many serious difficulties have been evaded (in Finnesburh, more particularly), and many things have been taken for granted, too easily. My apology must be that there seemed to be certain results available for criticism, apart from the more strict and scientific procedure which is required to solve the more difficult problems of Beowulf, or of the old Northern or the old French poetry. It is hoped that something may be gained by a less minute and exacting consideration of the whole field, and by an attempt to bring the more distant and dissociated parts of the subject into relation with one another, in one view. Some of these notes have been already used, in a course of three lectures at the Royal Institution, in March 1892, on "the Progress of Romance in the Middle Ages," and in lectures given at University College and elsewhere. The plot of the Dutch romance of Walewein was discussed in a paper submitted to the Folk-Lore Society two years ago, and published in the journal of the Society (Folk-Lore, vol. -

Abstract It is generally agreed that some numbers such as three and nine which appear frequently in the two Eddas hold special significances in Norse mythology. Furthermore, numbers appearing in sagas not only denote factual quantity, but also stand for specific symbolic meanings. This tradition of number symbolism could be traced to Pythagorean thought and to St. Augustine‟s writings. But the result in Old Norse literature is its own system influenced both by Nordic beliefs and Christianity. This double influence complicates the intertextuality in the light of which the symbolic meanings of numbers should be interpreted. -

The analysis is based on the traditional concept of ‘land, nation and language,’ which form the core of the Icelan- dic culture and national identity. The first section of the paper describes the definitional problems which occurred during the research. Then the methodology is explained, also taking into consider- ation the difficulties in examining Icelandic museums using standard tools and guidelines. The last section is devoted to the results of the research, presenting a few examples of different Icelandic museums and their approach to heritage through the prism of the abovementioned trinity. WAGNER AND THE VOLSUNGS None of Wagner’s works is more closely linked with Old Norse, and more especially Old Icelandic, culture. It would be carrying coals to Newcastle if I tried to go further into the significance of the incom- parable eddic poems. I will just mention that on my first visit to Iceland I was allowed to gaze on the actual manuscript, even to leaf through it . It is worth noting that Richard Wagner possessed in his library the same Icelandic–German dictionary that is still used today. His copy bears clear signs of use. This also bears witness to his search for the meaning and essence of the genuinely mythical, its very foundation. An Investigation of the Kennings in Ragnarsdrápa and Øxarflokkr
Universitet i Oslo, Fall 2013 Exploring the Emotive versus the Scholarly: an Investigation of the Kennings in Ragnarsdrápa and Øxarflokkr By Sydney A. Krell Guidance: Mikael Males Master Thesis in Nordic Viking and Medieval Culture Summary The poetry of Bragi inn Gamli and Einarr Skúlason has been thoroughly studied by many Old Norse scholars, but never directly in comparison to one another. This paper will investigate the nuances of each author’s verse, specifically regarding the way in which they utilize kennings, and draw conclusions based upon their similarities and differences. Both Bragi and Einarr composed within the same language, geographical area, and poetic tradition; they used similar kenning types that evolve from pagan imagery; and each describes a precious weapon given to them by a ruler whom they praise via a traditional skaldic long style poem. However, they could not be more different. This is due to the fact that Einarr’s kennings are meant to show his scholastic prowess, and Bragi’s are meant to affect his audience and move his plot based verse forward. The poetry of Bragi Boddason makes use of pagan mythology, ekphrasis, nýgerving, ofljóst and metaphors in the form of kennings, just as the poetry of Einarr Skúlason does. And yet the poems differ so greatly. Bragi’s kennings are meant to affect his audience on an emotional level, whereas Einarr’s are meant to impress on a scholarly level. UWE EBEL VORÜBERLEGUNGEN ZU EINER THEORIE DER VARIANTE IN DER LITERATUR DES ISLÄNDISCHEN MITTELALTERS Die Reflexion des Umstands, dass die mittelalterliche Literatur in Varianten überliefert wurde, wird traditionell der Editionsphilologie zugewiesen. Trügt der Eindruck nicht, dass Editionsphilologie tendenziell darauf abzielt, Varianten zu reduzieren, sie im Idealfall aufzuheben, ist ein Wesensmerkmal der Tradie- rung mittelalterlicher Literatur und damit des mittelalterlichen Textbewusst- seins der Theoretisierung nur als Ärgernis und crux zugänglich. Wenn jüngere editorische Bemühungen sich darauf richten, die Texte so aufzuarbeiten, dass das Phänomen der mouvance in die Wiedergabe hineingenommen wird, dann berücksichtigen sie zwar die Varianz als Spezifikum des mittelalterlichen Text- begriffs, sind aber ihrerseits gezwungen, solche Varianz zu reduzieren, die Varianten überschaubar zu halten und damit latent wieder aufzuheben. Das im Edieren sich manifestierende Interesse, die in der Edition sich niederschlagende Form der Traditionspflege ist, weil neuzeitlich, unaufhebbar von der unter- schieden, die das Mittelalter in seiner Weise der Textreproduktion pflegte. Die Editionsphilologie unterscheidet — und ich spreche hier von der vorherrschenden Norm, nicht von Einzelfällen — zwischen wichtigen und weniger wichtigen Varianten und privilegiert letztere, weil sie über sie die Filia- tionen der Handschriften ermitteln und bewusst veränderte Fassungen, ‛Überar- beitungen’, Vortragsversionen usw. identifizieren zu können glaubt. Das unver- kennbare und durchaus irritierende Phänomen der kleineren bis kleinsten Va- rianten wird angesichts dieser Interessenlage kaum einer theoretischen Erarbei- tung zugeführt. Es will aber eigens bedacht und ausgewertet werden, dass die Tradenten etwa schwach markierte Wörter ihrer Vorlagen übergehen oder zufügen, dass sie ihre Vorlage hinsichtlich der Satzstellung mehr oder weniger einschneidend verändern, dass sie Wörter und Wendungen durch synonyme Äquivalenzen ersetzen, und Ähnliches mehr. -

THE MAGIC APPLES Chapter Five IT is not very amusing to be a king. Father Odin often grew tired of sitting all day long upon his golden throne in Valhalla above the heavens. He wearied of welcoming the new heroes whom the Valkyries brought him from wars upon the earth, and of watching the old heroes fight their daily deathless battles. He wearied of his wise ravens, and the constant gossip which they brought him from the four corners of the world; and he longed to escape from every one who knew him to some place where he could pass for a mere stranger, instead of the great king of the Æsir, the mightiest being in the whole universe, of whom every one was afraid. Sometimes he longed so much that he could not bear it. Then—he would run away. He disguised himself as a tall old man, with white hair and a long, gray beard. Around his shoulders he threw a huge blue cloak, that covered him from top to toe, and over his face he pulled a big slouch hat, to hide his eyes. For his eyes Odin could not change—no magician has ever learned how to do that. One was empty; he had given the eye to the giant Mimer in exchange for wisdom. Usually Odin loved to go upon these wanderings alone; for an adventure is a double adventure when one meets it single-handed. It was a fine game for Odin to see how near he could come to danger without feeling the grip of its teeth.
