Norse Game of Tablut
Norse game of Tablut History “Tafl” are a family of ancient Nordic and Celtic strategy board games played on a checkered or latticed gameboard with two armies of uneven numbers. A king is at the centre of the board, with his small band of loyal defenders, facing a horde of attackers twice their number, who are lined up at the edges ready to attack from all sides. The king must escape from the board, while the attackers must capture him. There are a few versions of Tafl and many variations on the rules. Tablut (this game) is a simpler version with a 9x9 board and fewer pieces. Hnefltafl (also on sale at cheshire.ca) is played on an 11x11 board. Tablut is a unique blend of two kinds of strategy games; “hunt” games, and “war” games. A hunt game is one where the purpose is for one (prey) player to get their piece from one spot on the board to another, while their opponent’s goal is to stop them. On the other hand, war games, like chess, are usually played between two players with equal armies, which create balance & more strategic, compelling play. Tablut gives the prey an army, which can defend & attack, adding a greater level of complexity. Between 400 and 1000 AD, as Viking raiders, adventurers and settlers spread further afield, the game spread to other cultures: the English, Scots, Welsh and Irish all played. Norse traders also took the game east with them to Russia and Ukraine. By the 12th century, the popularity of Tafl games was challenged and overcome by the game of chess in all the lands it had invaded. -

It seeks to establish the relationship of the various valkyrja reflexes of the culture under study with other supernatural females (particularly the dísir) through the close and careful examination of primary source material, thereby proposing a new model of base supernatural femininity for the late Iron Age. The study then goes on to examine how the valkyrjur themselves deviate from this ground state, interrogating various aspects and features associated with them in skaldic, Eddic, prose and iconographic source material as seen through the lens of the hall-based warrior elite, before presenting a new understanding of valkyrja phenomena in this social context: that valkyrjur were used as instruments to propagate the pre-existing social structures of the culture that created and maintained them throughout the late Iron Age. -

It would be carrying coals to Newcastle if I tried to go further into the significance of the incom- parable eddic poems. I will just mention that on my first visit to Iceland I was allowed to gaze on the actual manuscript, even to leaf through it . It is worth noting that Richard Wagner possessed in his library the same Icelandic–German dictionary that is still used today. His copy bears clear signs of use. This also bears witness to his search for the meaning and essence of the genuinely mythical, its very foundation. ‘NORTHERN GODS IN MARBLE’ The Romantic Rediscovery Marble of Norse Mythology [ KNUT LJØGODT ABSTRACT The Norse myths were rediscovered in the late 18th century, and became important to contemporary culture during the first half of the 19th century. The Romantics discussed the usage of themes from Norse mythology; soon, these themes became widespread in art and literature. Their popularity is closely connected with the national ideals and political situations of the period, but they were often given individual artistic interpretations. The ] Romantic interest in Norse myths and heroes held sway over artists and writers throughout the 19th century. Introduction Karen Blixen’s short story ‘Sorrow-Acre’, published in Winter’s Tales (1942) takes place at a Danish country estate in the late 18th century. During a conversation between the baron and his nephew, they discuss Classical versus Norse mythol- ogy. The young man has discovered the Norse myths through a recently pub- lished work: ‘He mentioned the name of the author, Johannes Ewald, and recited a couple of the elevated verses.’ The book he refers to is Ewald’s play The Death of Balder (1775). He goes on to praise the Norse gods: ‘And I have wondered, while I read,’ he went on after a pause, still moved by the lines he himself had declaimed, ‘that we have not till now understood how much our Nordic my- thology in moral greatness surpasses that of Greece and Rome. If it had not been for the physical beauty of the ancient gods, which have come down to us in marble, no modern mind could hold them worthy of worship. -

The integration of these data sets allowed for the Agency (CSA), MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates creation of a finer scale bedrock geologic map, and a Ltd. Exploration (CPSX) at the University of Western On- tario, as part of the NSERC CREATE project “Tech- nologies and Techniques for Earth and Space Explora- tion” [1]. The 2015 CanMars mission took place in an undisclosed location in Utah, USA over the course of ~2 weeks during November using the Mars Explora- tion Science Rover (MESR) rover, built by MDA. Mission goals included evaluating hardware and soft- ware capabilities along with exploration strategies, workflow, and logistics associated with a Mars Sample Return mission. The mission payload instrumentation used by the rover included: a hand-held XRF stand-in for Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) [2], portable XRD, a hand-held Raman spectrometer, the Three Dimensional Exploration Multispectral Mi- croscope Imager (TEMMI) [3, 4], a MastCam [5], a push tube solid sampler, and a portable field core drill as a stand-in for a rock core sampler. -

History of Fairfax City
HISTORY OF FAIRFAX CITY The City of Fairfax began as the Town of Providence in 1805, a community built around the Fairfax County Courthouse. Completed in 1800 at the corner of Little River Turnpike and Ox Road, the area was a crossroads of conflict during the American Civil War with hardships and disrupted lives for everyone. From a crossroads of conflict, the area became a crossroads of commerce in the late nineteenth century when the dairy industry propelled economic rebirth and the building of schools, churches, homes, barns, and businesses and in 1874 the Town of Providence officially became the Town of Fairfax. The early 20th century ushered in a myriad of technological and transportation changes and the emergence of civic organizations, sports clubs, a Town police unit, and a volunteer fire company. World War II spurred rapid growth across the region in housing, business ventures, and population and Fairfax quickly changed from a rural to a suburban community. The Town of Fairfax deeded a 150-acre tract of land in 1959 to the University of Virginia to establish a permanent home for what is now George Mason University. In 1961, the Town of Fairfax was incorporated as the independent City of Fairfax and in 1962 a new City Hall was completed. Rich in history and heritage, residents and visitors enjoy a small-town atmosphere and an abundance of cultural and recreational pursuits in the midst of a bustling metropolitan area. As the City's first mayor, John C. Wood said in 1962 - "Fairfax has a wonderful past and present and an even greater future." HOW DID THE JULY 4TH CELEBRATION BEGIN IN FAIRFAX CITY? Fairfax City’s Independence Day Parade and Fireworks began in 1967 and was organized by the Delta Alpha Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.
