East is situated on the eastern banks of the river that divides Delhi into two parts. This part of Delhi is therefore also popular as the Trans Yamuna area. With time, has attained a neat and chic look with the posh residential areas, luxurious malls and indulging restaurants. Some of the most important commercial and administrative centres are located in Delhi East. The four important regions of East Delhi are Mayors Vihar, , Shahdara and . Preet Vihar, with its designer boutiques and shops has proved to be the center for fashion freaks. Likewise, this particular area is also known for its popular hang outs like Mc Donalds, Domino's Pizza, Nirula's, Sagar Ratna, Saffron Court and Bikanerwala. The Preet Vihar in East Delhi is also known for its educational and coaching centers like Fitjee, Career Launcher, NIIT and Aptech. This region in East Delhi is further divided into three areas- , Shakarpur and Anand Vihar. There are numerous hotels that provide fabulous room services to make your stay in the state a cherishable affair. Accommodations are also provided by numerous co-operative organizations, providing the ultimate comfort to the visitors. District Institute of Education & Training, Karkardooma is located at Karkardooma Institutional Area, District East. In December 1991, the passed the 74th Constitution Amendment Bill providing a legislative assembly of seventy seats with seven members of council of ministers headed by a Chief Minister. In 1993, Delhi was designated as national (NCT). Presently, the NCT of Delhi has nine revenue district of which District East is one. The district is administered by the Deputy Commissioner. The district has three administrative Sub-divisions namely Gandhi Nagar, Vivek Vihar and Preet Vihar. The heads of Sub-Divisions/ Tehsils are known as Sub-Divisional Magistrate.The Office of Deputy commissioner East is at I& F Complex, LM Bund Road, Shastri Nagar, Delhi & DCP Head Quarter is at Shalimar Park.There are also three more teacher training institutes working in the district which are run by private management but affiliated to SCERT, Delhi. They are namely Rishabh institute, Sai Institute of Education and Ideal Institute of management and Technology.

In Delhi, there is a multi-management system for education particularly for school education. There are schools, managed by Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Municipal Corporation (NDMC), and Directorate of Education and some schools are being managed by private organizations, trusts etc. But MCD and Directorate of Education have the major share of student population particularly at elementary level. MCD has the responsibility of imparting primary education only.

Education department manages number of aided and recognized schools. There are 123 Non- Government schools under MCD, and 138 Non-Government schools under Directorate of Education. Some of the schools are double shifted.

Geographical features, socio economic and cultural Characteristics:

The geographical area of the District East is 64 Square Kilometers. * Topographically the east Delhi is more or less same as that of rest of Delhi, but due to the river Yamuna flowing across its southern and western boundaries the district has alluvial soil, which is fertile and rich in silica & aluminum. Located between Yamuna & Hindon , it is a low lying area and flood plain. The east district is separated from rest of the Delhi by river Yamuna which flows in its west direction. The east of east district Delhi is outlined by which also spreads up to South direction of East Delhi. The north of east district is . The district has Shahdara, Gandhi Nagar, Jheel Khuranja, Geeta Colony, Teliwara, Patparganj, ** which even today stand for their old legacies, the traditions & traditional, whether its sweets or dresses or business. Part of shahdara hosts AnajMandi, Sabji Mandi at Gazipur. The ‘district has chain of Viharas to mention a few, Preet Vihar, swasthya vihar, Vivek Vihar, and Anand Vihar. The resettlement colonies like Trilokpuri & Kalyanpuri are also settled in East Delhi.

The east district has ‘a distinction of having all types of income groups thereby providing all the facilities required for meeting the varied needs of its people. Markets at Shakarpur, Laxmi Nagar are drawing parallels with any modern updated market.
