Arriving (a few minutes past the hour) a bit frazzled but eager, I too would like to stand at the teacher’s podium and say a few words (even though, like Travis, I didn’t even have a speech prepared). But I would like to say this: writing a dissertation is not something you can do all on your own. Many, many people contributed to my dissertation. I’d like to thank my UC Santa Barbara committee for their faith in my meanderings, Jack—for taking a chance…on an unknown kid—and last but not least, the wonderful crew at Whole Foods for allowing me to embarrass myself by spending hours hunched over an absurdly expensive salad as I typed away at my laptop, without which I might never be Dr. Reed. Clueless quotes aside, I would like to more earnestly express gratitude for a rock star dissertation committee that not only sounds like a dream, but proved in reality to be more than I ever could have dreamt of—Stephanie L. Our directed readings my first quarter became the groundwork for so much future inquiry. I was able to hit the ground running by carrying forward the energy from our generative conversations throughout my graduate career, strengthened and affirmed by your ongoing mentorship. I don’t know if I ever told you that on the first day of your memorable seminar on Literature and the Human Rights Movement I woke up with quite a predicament. The course began at one in the afternoon, as did the hours of a tattoo studio I desperately needed to visit in order to attend to an apparently infected Monroe piercing. I chose to attend your class with a swollen face rather than handle what was in fact a medical emergency, and I would do it again. Stephanie, I cannot imagine my life without having encountered your brilliance and guidance. When a student told me that my instruction style, inflection, and way with words echoed yours, I was floored by the compliment. And when I guest lectured on Shange’s for colored girls in Introduction to African American Literature and looked out into the audience to see you beaming and teary, the impact you’ve had on my life condensed in a moment that won’t ever leave me. In putting the finishing touches on my dissertation, it has become ever more obvious that the actual subtitle of my project should be “Stephanie and her BFFs,” as you introduced me to a number of scholars from the Black Performance Theory working group as well as Sharon Bridgforth, whose impact on my spirit has also been transformative. Sharon, thank you for touching my life and the lives of my students through your work as well as your willingness to engage with them via Skype in the classroom. I, and I’m sure they, will never forget it. Teaching your performance texts brings me limitless joy, and to quote our sustaining email exchanges: We are on the Journey together fo sho! v Serving as Graduate Fellow of the Antiracism, Inc. program, convened by Felice Blake and sponsored by the UCSB English Department’s American Cultures & Global Contexts Center and the UC Humanities Research Institute, without a doubt transformed my ways of teaching and doing, knowing and being. If anyone could singlehandedly end institutional racism, I am convinced that person would be you. As that task proves enormous, luckily we can go it together. I may be moving to Virginia but I am not leaving you. Our work continues! To my community organizing family: I would be lost without you. Members of the SB Coalition for Justice, particularly Sunny Lim, Sonya Baker, Danielle Stevens, Michelle Mercer, and Katie Maynard—you taught me how to be an organizer. To members of the Shawn Greenwood Working Group, in particular Paula Ioanide, and Californians United for a Responsible Budget (CURB), especially Diana Zuñiga, thank you for activating new communities of consciousness on campus.     JAMES BALDWIN AS A WRITER OF SHORT FICTION: AN EVALUATION dayton G. Holloway A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY December 1975 618208 ii Abstract Well known as a brilliant essayist and gifted novelist, James Baldwin has received little critical attention as short story writer. This dissertation analyzes his short fiction, concentrating on character, theme and technique, with some attention to biographical parallels. The first three chapters establish a background for the analysis and criticism sections. Chapter 1 provides a biographi­ cal sketch and places each story in relation to Baldwin's novels, plays and essays. Chapter 2 summarizes the author's theory of fiction and presents his image of the creative writer. Chapter 3 surveys critical opinions to determine Baldwin's reputation as an artist. The survey concludes that the author is a superior essayist, but is uneven as a creator of imaginative literature. Critics, in general, have not judged Baldwin's fiction by his own aesthetic criteria. The next three chapters provide a close thematic analysis of Baldwin's short stories. Chapter 4 discusses "The Rockpile," "The Outing," "Roy's Wound," and "The Death of the Prophet," a Bi 1 dungsroman about the tension and ambivalence between a black minister-father and his sons. In contrast, Chapter 5 treats the theme of affection between white fathers and sons and their ambivalence toward social outcasts—the white homosexual and black demonstrator—in "The Man Child" and "Going to Meet the Man." Chapter 6 explores the theme of escape from the black community and the conseauences of estrangement and identity crises in "Previous Condition," "Sonny's Blues," "Come Out the Wilderness" and "This Morning, This Evening, So Soon." The last chapter attempts to apply Baldwin's aesthetic principles to his short fiction.

Levine This dissertation investigates the conflict between the powerful emancipatory image of the New Woman as represented in the illustrated magazines of the Weimar Republic and the translation of this image into a lifestyle acted out by women during this era. I argue that while female journalists promote the image of the New Woman in illustrated magazines as a liberating opening onto self-determination and self- management, this very image is simultaneously and paradoxically oppressive. For women to shake off the inheritance of a patriarchal past, they must learn to adjust to a new identity, one that is still to a large extent influenced by and in the service of men. The ideal beauty image designed by female journalists as a framework for emancipation in actuality turned into an oppressive normalization in professional and social markets in which traditional rules no longer obtained.

For twenty-nine years he was director of a school in the Ukrainian village of Pavlysh, far away from the big cities. For his work in education, he was awarded the titles of Hero of Socialist Labour and Merited Teacher of the Ukrainian SSR; and elected Corresponding Member of the Academy of Pedagogical Science of the USSR. What is the essence of Vasily Sukhomlinsky's work as an educator? Progressive educators have long tried to merge upbringing and instruction into one educational process. This dream was realized in the educational work of Sukhomlinsky. To see an individual in every school child - this was the essence of his educational method and a necessary requirement for anyone who hopes to raise and teach children. Vasily Sukhomlinsky showed in theory and practice that any healthy child can get a modern secondary education in an ordinary public school without any separation of children into group of bright and less bright. This was no new discovery. But he found the sensible mean that enable, the teacher to lead the child to knowledge in keeping with the national educational programme. The main thing for Sukhomlinsky was to awaken the child's desire to learn, to develop a taste for self-education and self-discipline. Sukhomlinsky studied each of his pupils, consulting with the other teachers and with the parents, comparing his own thoughts with the views of the great educators of the past and with folk wisdom.

As the attention to gospel music in texts about black women demonstrates, the material conditions of poverty and oppression did not exclude the existence of their spiritual value—of their claim to humanity that was not based on conduct or social decorum. At root, this project seeks to further the scholarship in sound and black feminist studies— applying concepts, such as saturation, break, and technology to the interpretation of black womanhood in the vernacular and cultural recordings of gospel in literature. Further, this dissertation seeks to offer neW historiography of black female development in tWentieth century literature—one which is shaped by a sounding culture that took place in choir stands, on radios in cramped kitchens, and on stages all across the nation.

This violent rhetoric is evident in messages that have been circulated by prominent public figures, as well as entrenched in the policies and administrative responses addressing sexual violence on college campuses. The impact of such rhetoric is the perpetuation and affirmation of the sub-humanization of survivors of sexual trauma. In this thesis, I put disability studies scholarship in conversation with feminist theories on sexual violence and public art in order to highlight the interconnected history of sexism-ableism in the U.S. and the function of anti-rape art projects as artivist practices on college campuses. Specifically, I will be considering Duke University’s Breaking Out Campaign, the University of Chicago’s Clothesline Project, and Emma Sulkowicz’s Mattress Performance (undertaken at Columbia University). I use grounded theory and discourse analysis to interpret digital articles written in reaction to the art projects and to track three common trends in sexist-ableist campus community responses: the narrative of special treatment, the narrative of pathology, and the narrative of willful ignorance.
