Its main aim is to get students acquainted with the history of coinage, highlighting Greek banknotes that were produced from the foundation of the Greek State (1830) until the arrival of the Euro (2002). Through conversation and the use of supervisory material, students become familiar with the illustrations of Greek banknotes and learn about landmark moments in Greek history. They further develop their creative skills by designing banknotes, while at the same time group activities help them improve their social skills and team spirit.

The educational programme “When coins met banknotes” was initially presented as an independent educational activity, on the occasion of International Museum Day, May 16 through May 20, 2018. Nonetheless, due to increasing demand from local schools, it became part of the Museum’s permanent educational programmes. The Programme was designed to help children sharpen their observation skills by seeking out important banknotes among the Museum exhibits and discovering the ancient coins hidden in these banknotes as well as become acquainted with gods, legends and leaders of the ancient world.

The Alpha Bank Library Konstantinos Theotokis

onstantinos Theotokis, a writer, translator and key representative of the so-called Ionian School, was born in Corfu on K March 13, 1872. He was born into an aristocratic family, whose roots can be traced back to Byzantine times, the son of count Markos Theotokis and Angeliki Polyla. An excellent student, he studied at the “Kapodistrias School” (Ekpaideftirio Kapodistria) and then at the “Corfu Gymnasium” (Kerkyraiko Gymnasio). In 1889, he went to Paris to study physics and mathematics at Sorbonne University. A polyglot from a very young age, he could speak five languages and had sound knowledge of another five dead languages, hence was able to translate works by ancient Greek as well as foreign classic authors. In 1891 he moved, for financial reasons, to Venice, where he met and went on to marry Baroness Ernestine von Malowitz, with whom he had one daughter. In 1895 he returned to Corfu together with his family; he became good friends with poet Lorentzos Mavilis and joined the demotic language movement. He fought as a volunteer in the 1896 Cretan Revolt and the 1897 Greco-Turkish War, while during World War I he joined the Movement of National Defence. After the war, he was appointed secretary at the National Library where he was later promoted to Head of Department. At the same time, he worked at the Eleftheroudakis publishing house. He passed away in Corfu, on July 1, 1923, aged 51.

In 1887, Konstantinos Theotokis published two studies, one about the electric telegraph and the other about manned hot air balloons. At the age of 19 he wrote, in French, his first work, titled “La vie des Montagnes”, which was published by the publishing house Mercure de France. In 1898, his short story “To vio tis kyras Kerkyras” was published in Hatzopoulos’ literary magazine “Techni” (Art), which went on to publish his short story “Pistoma” in 1899 and then, in instalments, his work “Pathos” (Passion). Over the next few years, between 1900 and 1909, various literary magazines published many short stories, novellas, novels as well as translations by Konstantinos Theotokis. His most productive period was from 1910 to the end of his life, with his most distinctive works being the short story “Oi dyo agapes” (The two loves), published in the magazine “Noumas” in 1910 and the well-known novella “I timi kai to chrima” (Honour and Money), which initially appeared in instalments in 1912 and was published two years later in Corfu, by the G. Aspiotis Brothers publishing house, featuring drawings by Markos Zavitzianos. Many more of his works were published, mostly by the Vassiliou and the Eleftheroudakis publishing houses, where he pre-sold his work in order to meet his financial needs. Theotokis’ early career and his first novels reflect a strong influence by Friedrich Nietzsche. His “Corfu stories” series of short stories portray life in Corfu at that time, in a realistic and straightforward way. His works stand out for their dramatic narrative and realistic approach, featuring the atmosphere found in novels of manners and reflecting a philosophical mood. Apart from short stories and novels, Theotokis also wrote a few sonnets, known for their lyricism and subtle feelings. Finally, his many translations include Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”, “Macbeth,” “King Lear” and “Othello”, as well as Virgil’s “Georgics” and works by Goethe and Plato.

The Collection of the Bank’s Library includes a large number of works by Konstantinos Theotokis, such as novels, short stories, novellas and more.

Panayiotis Tetsis Pomegranate on the table, 1970-75 Oil on canvas 110x150 cm.

Kavala Branch (800)

ne of the 14 paintings by Panayiotis Tetsis that belong to the Alpha Bank Art Collection is the Pomegranate on the table, a work the artist produced in the early 1970s, the period of his maturity.

The subjects that Tetsis chose to portray, landscapes or indoor spaces, were merely incentives. Objects, furniture, fruit, surfaces and exteriors, were chosen on the basis of volume and colour; light subsequently transformed them into art.

After completing in the 1960s different series of works focusing on Athens, mostly the neighbourhood around his studio and natures mortes, as well as studies on form, he settled on a particular balance between light and his passion for colour. In his mature period, he reached a point where gaze painting, namely the unexpected changes caused by the relentless Greek light, co-exists with colour painting, which defines the clarity and intensity of colour shades.

< 43 / 50 > CULTURE SPECIAL • ART NETWORK

Panayiotis Tetsis Pomegranate on the table, 1970-75 Oil on canvas 110x150 cm.

This balance can easily be traced in the painting Pomegranate on the table. Tetsis decided to portray a simple table, with a large pomegranate on top, which is surrounded by chairs that are painted in intense blue.

This is the work’s subject, namely the incentive, the reason prompting the artist to paint. The finished the painting is a colourful universe, where intense blue and its variations, as well as shades of dark green and yellowish ochre, prevail. The light, which is the motive, takes over the painting from the top right and disrupts the colour balance. Light turns into colour, so there are surfaces featuring a single colour (the table), elements whose colour is the result of unexpected compositions of colour shades (the chairs), volume that only exists for its own sake (the pomegranate) and the light that changes on every surface available (the wall, the window, the floor). Tetsis has taken many liberties with this particular painting, but it is mostly his violent, expressive brushstrokes, and the successive coats of paint they have added everywhere, which have, at the same time, created a calm and transparent atmosphere.

Frame at the Lefkada Branch (684)

Prefecture of Lefkada Leukas

he first settlers of the island of Leukas date to the Neolithic times. In 640 BC, a thousand Corinthians under Gorgus, son of Cypselus, T built the city of Leukas at the northeastern part of the island, the Isthmus, which they dug up before building a bridge. Excavations have uncovered part of the walls of the acropolis and the city, the harbor dock and the theatre. The temple of Apollo, where poet Sappho reportedly committed suicide by jumping into the sea, was further south. During the Corcyra events, Leukas sided with its mother-city Corinth and in 373 BC assisted the Spartan fleet against Corcyra. During the Hellenistic period, it came under the control of Cassander, Agathocles and then Pyrrhus, until it became a member of the Acarnanian League. After the battle of Actium, Augustus forced the residents of Leukas to settle in the newly-founded Nicopolis. The first silver coins issued by Leukas feature the types of Corinth, namely Pegasus and the head of goddess Athena, with the initial of the island’s name, the letter “Λ”, engraved on the obverse. Later on, the island produced coins with new iconographic types, inspired by its religious tradition and history. The statue of Aphrodite Aeneias, who was worshiped on the island, with her attributes, the deer and the dove, were depicted on the obverse, while a ship’s prow, a reference to the naval prowess of Leukas, was depicted on the reverse.
