Teaching Classical Languages Volume 10, Issue 2 Kopestonsky 71 Never Out of Style: Teaching Latin Love Poetry with Pop Music1 Theodora B. Kopestonsky University of Tennessee, Knoxville ABSTRACT Students often struggle to interpret Latin poetry. To combat the confusion, teachers can turn to a modern parallel (pop music) to assist their students in understanding ancient verse. Pop music is very familiar to most students, and they already trans- late its meaning unconsciously. Building upon what students already know, teach- ers can reframe their approach to poetry in a way that is more effective. This essay shows how to present the concept of meter (dactylic hexameter and elegy) and scansion using contemporary pop music, considers the notion of the constructed persona utilizing a modern musician, Taylor Swift, and then addresses the pattern of the love affair in Latin poetry and Taylor Swift’s music. To illustrate this ap- proach to connecting ancient poetry with modern music, the lyrics and music video from one song, Taylor Swift’s Blank Space (2014), are analyzed and compared to poems by Catullus. Finally, this essay offers instructions on how to create an as- signment employing pop music as a tool to teach poetry — a comparative analysis between a modern song and Latin poetry in the original or in translation. For many students, their experience with poetry of any sort, let alone ancient Latin verse, has been fraught with frustration, apprehension, and confusion. -

It is contended that the order of the first 61 of the items transmitted under the name of ‘Catullus Veronensis’ shows signs of a conscious design, whether by the author or by some editor, that item 61 should be placed with its predecessors rather than with the seven ‘long’ poems which follow, that the widely used term ‘polymetrum’ is a thoroughly confusing misnomer, that metrical pattern requires the division of the 61 items into three distinct groups - ZmyphppaTa in ‘Phalaecian’ verse, L“apPoi, and p+ - and, most importantly, that even where they take up apparently similar themes the pih~distin- guish themselves in verbal style markedly from the ‘Phalaecian’ Z7riyphppa.ra and only a little less markedly from the L“apPoi. In order to illustrate this last point the lyric item 11 is compared in systematic detail with the two ‘Phalaecian’ epigrams which precede and follow it in the transmitted collection. Discussion of each feature of items 10,ll and 12 centres on its relationship with what third- and second-century BC poets might have written and with what first-century speakers of Latin might have said. The character of our record of the Latin of the two centuries following 240 BC makes a degree of tentativeness inevitable. The three groups of the 61 items in question take us to a linguistic world distant from that of items 62-68. -

It shows imitatio to be a dynamic, rich and sophisticated practice, one which may be productively read as both a form of intertextuality and reception, terms which capture its contingent and active nature. The readings here re-calibrate Petrarch’s canzoniere suggesting that this influential sequence of love sonnets is itself a moralised re- writing of Roman erotic elegy. By re-framing the ‘Petrarchan’ love poetry of Thomas Wyatt, Philip Sidney, John Donne and Mary Sidney as elegiac receptions, the readings here re-open these familiar texts and offer fresh interpretations of how they can be made to mean. -

For more information, please contact [email protected]. ii ABSTRACT This thesis examines the transitions that the Roman discourses of otium experience between the years 60–40 BCE. I examine the instances of otium in Cicero, Catullus, and Sallust to reconstruct the discourses that influenced their usages of the term, and to shed light on how elite Roman men were adjusting to their shrinking access to the political sphere as a small number of men gained power. To perform this analysis, I rely on discourse theory and leisure studies. I have identified six main usages of otium in their writings: otium as free time; otium as peace, or time without disturbance; otium as opposite public business; otium as time for textual creation; otium as time for study; and cum dignitate otium. -
