It shows imitatio to be a dynamic, rich and sophisticated practice, one which may be productively read as both a form of intertextuality and reception, terms which capture its contingent and active nature. The readings here re-calibrate Petrarch’s canzoniere suggesting that this influential sequence of love sonnets is itself a moralised re- writing of Roman erotic elegy. By re-framing the ‘Petrarchan’ love poetry of Thomas Wyatt, Philip Sidney, John Donne and Mary Sidney as elegiac receptions, the readings here re-open these familiar texts and offer fresh interpretations of how they can be made to mean. The introduction traces the presence of Latin love elegy in the early modern period, and shows that a modern scholarly over-reliance on Petrarch and Ovid has obscured the way Renaissance love poetry is also shaped by and through its relationships to the texts of Catullus, Propertius and Sulpicia. The four chapters which follow trace these intertextual relationships in detail through readings of a small number of poems: those of Catullus and Wyatt, Propertius and Sidney, Ovid and Donne, and Sulpicia and Mary Sidney. The interventions which this project makes are two-fold: firstly it applies modern theories of reception and intertextuality to Renaissance love poetry, and refreshes the way imitatio may be read. Secondly, it re-frames ‘Petrarchan’ love poetry of sixteenth-century England and reveals it to be a complex, subtle and sometimes revisionary re-writing of Latin love elegy. And, lastly, profound thanks to my parents: you may not always have understood why this is important to me, but have offered unconditional love anyway. 6 Textual note As a general principle, I have taken quotations from classical Latin texts from the Oxford Classical Text (OCT), with translations from the Loeb edition: translations are sometimes lightly and silently adapted in keeping with the OCT. The few Greek quotations that appear are given in translation only from either the Loeb or, in the case of Homer, from the Richmond Lattimore translations. Early modern quotations are taken from standard editions as noted in the footnotes and bibliography, and follow the editors’ decisions on modernisation of spelling and punctuation: so, for example, Thomas Nashe’s texts, following McKerrow, appear unmodernised, while Thomas Wyatt’s poetry, taken from Rebholtz, has been adapted to current spelling conventions. Abbreviations that appear in the footnotes are OED for the Oxford English Dictionary, and OLD for the Oxford Latin Dictionary. Standard abbreviations for Latin texts are given in footnotes, but the texts are given their full name in the body of chapters to avoid confusion. 7 Introduction: ‘All that rout of lascivious poets that wrote epistles and ditties of love’ 0.1 ‘We should write just as bees make honey’: imitatio, Roman love elegy, and the ‘Petrarchan’ The opening sonnet of Philip Sidney’s Astrophil and Stella gives a vivid picture of a sixteenth-century English poet struggling to write love poetry. Astrophil’s first recourse is to previous poets: ‘oft turning others’ leaves, to see if thence would flow | some fresh and fruitful showers upon my sunburnt brain’.1 Poetic inspiration is presupposed to come from reading prior writers, ‘turning others’ leaves’.2 But the practice of Renaissance literary imitatio is not a simple or unsophisticated one. ‘Turning’ certainly refers to the turning over of pages as Astrophil scours through what has already been written; but it also implies a metamorphic art, the ‘turning’ of one image, trope, text or even genre into something undoubtedly related and, yet, different.3 This thesis traces the imitation - a ‘turning’ - of classical Latin love elegy (specifically Catullus, Propertius, Ovid and Sulpicia) in, and into, the so-called ‘Petrarchan’ love poetry of four English writers of the sixteenth century: Thomas Wyatt, Philip Sidney, John Donne, and Mary Sidney.

    Teaching Classical Languages Volume 10, Issue 2 Kopestonsky 71 Never Out of Style: Teaching Latin Love Poetry with Pop Music1 Theodora B. Kopestonsky University of Tennessee, Knoxville ABSTRACT Students often struggle to interpret Latin poetry. To combat the confusion, teachers can turn to a modern parallel (pop music) to assist their students in understanding ancient verse. Pop music is very familiar to most students, and they already trans- late its meaning unconsciously. Building upon what students already know, teach- ers can reframe their approach to poetry in a way that is more effective. This essay shows how to present the concept of meter (dactylic hexameter and elegy) and scansion using contemporary pop music, considers the notion of the constructed persona utilizing a modern musician, Taylor Swift, and then addresses the pattern of the love affair in Latin poetry and Taylor Swift’s music. To illustrate this ap- proach to connecting ancient poetry with modern music, the lyrics and music video from one song, Taylor Swift’s Blank Space (2014), are analyzed and compared to poems by Catullus. Finally, this essay offers instructions on how to create an as- signment employing pop music as a tool to teach poetry — a comparative analysis between a modern song and Latin poetry in the original or in translation. The settlement of Southwark grew up around two gravel eyots – often referred to as the north and south islands – that were separated from the ‘mainland’ to the south by the Borough Channel. It was this series of gravel eyots upon which the bridge crossing to Londinium was constructed and connected to the south by Road 1. South of the Borough Channel and on higher ground the road splintered into Stane Street (running to Chichester) and Watling Street (running to Canterbury and Dover). The study area is located south of this road junction in an area that has become identified as the ‘Southern Cemeteries’ to denote it as separate to those cemeteries around Londinium on the north bank of the Thames. 7.3 Prehistoric 7.3.1 Pottery and worked flints found in north Southwark indicate that the area was frequented in the Mesolithic and later settled from the late Neolithic to early Bronze Age period onwards. What had been an intertidal zone would have varied in character depending on the periodic rising and falling of sea level due to climatic fluctuations (Killock 2010:12). However, the nature of that settlement is still poorly understood and most of the finds recorded on the HER from these periods are residual - suggesting a background presence of dispersed activity across north Southwark with the Mesolithic activity focussed closer to the Thames and the gravel eyots.

To demonstrate how Gellius creates this unique author-reader relationship as the ordo of the text unfolds, I read the Nights sequentially. In close readings of three books of the Attic Nights (Books 1, 2, and 14), I explore how Gellius develops themes over the course of each book and uses those themes to articulate his relationship with the reader. In order to pick out sequences that supply meaning to a sequential reading of such an apparently disordered text, I take advantage, at least initially, of the approach of Gibson and Morello (2012) to the Letters of Pliny the Younger, where a multitude of units (epistles, in Pliny’s case) are placed so as to appear well-mixed but also create sequences in which certain patterns emerge, suggesting a loose design. Following Gibson and Morello’s model, I begin by noticing a more-or-less obvious pattern in Book 2 and “re-read” the book with that pattern in mind; through that re-reading, I discover that Gellius highlights a father-son relationship as an analogue for the relationship between himself and his reader.

    THE SOCIAL AND POLITICAL CONTEXT FOR OBSTRUCTION IN ROMAN LOVE ELEGY by AMY K. LEONARD (Under the Direction of Charles Platter) ABSTRACT This thesis will examine the presence of erotic obstruction in the poems of the first century B.C. writers of Roman love elegy: Tibullus, Propertius and Ovid. While erotic poetry prior to this time period had long necessitated a sense of obstruction, the deliberate construction of a failed love-affair by the Roman elegists serves to define their particular use of obstruction as a unique discursive strategy. The observation has been made that the time period marking the emergence and disappearance of Roman elegy qualifies it as a discrete, time-bound genre. In light of these time considerations, the obstruction motif in elegy, as a means of articulating a continual sense of failure, is capable of giving involuntary voice to events taking place on the Roman socio-political front, specifically, as this thesis will argue, a perceived loss of autonomy under the changing political structures at the end of the Republic. The Way That Our Catullus Walked: Grammar and Poetry in the Late Republic Abstract This dissertation considers the poetry of Catullus and its often express concerns with matters of language through the lens of the Roman grammatical tradition. I argue that in Latin poetry, and in Latin literature more broadly, there existed a persistent interest in discussing linguistic matters--owing in large part to an early imitation of Greek authors who engaged openly with their language--and that this interest was articulated in ways that recall the figure of the professional grammaticus and the ars grammatica, the scientific study of the Latin language. I maintain that this interest becomes particularly widespread during the final decades of the Roman Republic, and so I present Catullus as a particularly representative example of this phenomenon. In each chapter I examine Catullus' poetry with reference to a different aspect of the grammaticus' trade. The first chapter considers the concept of latinitas, an idealized form of Latin that was discussed by professional grammatici, and coordinates Catullus' interaction with foreign words, morphology and phonology with similar approaches to the discussion of language as they are expressed by other poets and prose authors.
