p Issues of Gender Representation in Modern Greek Art The Case of Thaleia Flora-Caravia’s Photographic Images and Self-Portraits Despoina Tsourgianni ABSTRACT There is a recent trend, mainly in the fi eld of historiography but also in art history, toward the exploration of female autobiographical discourse, whether it concerns writ- ten (autobiographies, correspondence), painted (self-portraits), or photographic data. On the basis of the highly fruitful gender perspective, this article seeks to present and interpret the numerous photographs of the well-known Greek painter Thaleia Flora- Caravia. These photographic recordings, taken almost exclusively from the painter’s unpublished personal archive, are inextricably linked to the artist’s self-portraits. This kind of cross-examination allows the reader to become familiar with the mosaic of roles and identities that constitutes the subjectivity of female artists in Greece in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This dissertation provides an explanation of how Andr6 Malraux, a man of great influence on twentieth century European culture, developed his political ideology, first as an anticolonial social reformer in the 1920s, then as an antifascist militant in the 1930s. Almost all of the previous studies of Malraux have focused on his literary life, and most of them are rife with errors. This dissertation focuses on the facts of his life, rather than on a fanciful recreation from his fiction. The major sources consulted are government documents, such as police reports and dispatches, the newspapers that Malraux founded with Paul Monin, other Indochinese and Parisian newspapers, and Malraux's speeches and interviews. Other sources include the memoirs of Clara Malraux, as well as other memoirs and reminiscences from people who knew Andre Malraux during the 1920s and the 1930s. The dissertation begins with a survey of Malraux's early years, followed by a detailed account of his experiences in Indochina. -

NIKA Maklena University of Tirana, Albania E-mail: [email protected] Received 26.01.2015; Accepted 10.02. 2015 Abstract Transplanting the surrealist movement and literature in Greece and feedback from the critics and philological and journalistic circles of the time is of special importance in the history of Modern Greek Literature. The Greek critics and readers who were used to a traditional, patriotic and strictly rule-conforming literature would find it hard to accept such a kind of literature. The modern Greek surrealist writers, in close cooperation mainly with French surrealist writers, would be subject to harsh criticism for their surrealist, absurd, weird and abstract productivity. All this reaction against the transplanting of surrealism in Greece caused the so called “surrealist scandal”, one of the biggest scandals in Greek letters. Introduction When Andre Breton published the First Surrealist Manifest in 1924, Greece had started to produce the first modern works of its literature. Everything modern arrives late in Greece due to a number of internal factors (poetic collection of Giorgios Seferis “Mythistorima” (1935) is considered as the first modern work in Greek literature according to Αlexandros Argyriou, History of Greek Literature and its perception over years between two World Wars (1918-1940), volume Α, Kastanioti Publications, Athens 2002, pp. 534-535). Yet, on the other hand Greek writers continued to strongly embrace the new modern spirit prevailing all over Europe. -

Baseando-se nelas fez Thirty Are Better Than One, em 1963, uma versão da Anunciação na série Details of Renaissance Paintings, em 1984 (juntamente com obras de Sandro Botticelli, Piero della Francesca, Paolo Uccello), e The Last Supper, em 1986, com muitas variações, incluindo a maior, The Last Supper (Christ 112 Times) (1986). O texto reflete sobre essa trajetória procurando o sentido dos encontros de Warhol com Leonardo, entre outras obras-primas da Renascença que também incluíram (em 1985) a Madonna Sistina de Rafael Sanzio. -

His challenging and speculative output has intrigued generation of young music scholars; however, J. Christo- u’s work remains imperfectly and only patchily known and understood, especially outside Greece. This is partly because of the interdisciplinary nature of his late works which redu- ces the possibility of potential researchers who will academically establish J. Christou’s distinguished output. The aim of the present paper is to present and analyse parts of Strych- nine Lady, a work composed in 1967 in order to propose research directions in an effort to conÞ rm J. Christou’s posthumous reputation. Key words: Experimental music theatre, avant garde music, contemporary music, 20th century music, Greek avant garde composer Introduction On the 8th January 1970 an unusual and thrilling talent was lost in a car acci- dent: the composer Jani Christou. J. Christou was a major composer and philo- sopher, whose unusual, yet promising career was brought to an end after his untimely death at the age of 44. In his late works particularly J. Christou brought into conjunction his deep immersion in philosophical and psychological studies, including the ideas of Carl Jung and alchemy, with avant-garde musical and dra- matic materials and means. -

Ancak özellikle 20.yy’da (toplumsal olayların etkisiyle güncellenen entelektüel algı ile birlikte) radikal üretimler klasik üslup karşısında daha fazla öne çıkmış, pek çok Batılı sanatçı da gerek kavramsal gerekse nesnel açıdan üretimlerinde bu yönde bir eğilim göstermeye başlamıştır. Çağdaş Yunan sanatçılar da 20.yy'ın son çeyreğiyle iyiden iyiye küreselleşen bu yeni sanat anlayışında Avrupa ve Birleşik Devletler ile uyumlu bir estetik çizgide ilerlemekten geri kalmamış ve disiplinlerarası etkileşimden sıklıkla faydalanan multimedya tabanlı eserler üretmiştir. Place of Multimedia Technics in Contemporary Greek Art In Lucas Samaras Sample Abstract Studies and outputs that are executed by Ancient Greeks in plastic arts have been quite often used as a reference for the West-centered plastic arts aesthetics in the historical process. However, especially in the 20th century (together with intellectual perception that is updated by the effect of social events) radical outputs became more prominent against classical style and many Western artists in their outputs started to show tendency in this direction either cognitively or objectively. -

From his birth (1888) to his late adolescence, the artist lived in Greece, in Volos and especially Athens, until he moved to Munich in October 1906. So, he spent the first eighteen years of life – undoubtedly a formative moment for any young intellectual – mostly in Athens, where he also completed his first artistic studies in the Academy of Fine Arts of the Polytechnic School. As might be expected, research aimed at contextualizing and furthering the knowledge of pos- sible Hellenic influences on de Chirico’s artistic activity has focused so far on the specific analysis of the local painting scene, although with little or less than significant results. To be sure, we are not aware of any extant early painting from his Greek period, except for a negligible, small still life painted on cardboard, depicting a box of matches with a lit cigarette leaning against it (fig. 1); the verso shows an earlier copy of a detail of a chromolithography by Bel- gian painter Jan van Beers (Lier, 27 March 1852-Fay- aux-Loges, 17 November 1927), which we have iden- tified here (figs. 2, 3).1 If this copy is an example of the nearly photographic unyielding adherence by a young artist who might have not yet attended the academy, the small oil is actually a genre exercise, probably painted while de Chirico was still a student.
