Mr. Hachiya Isshiken Souhitsu, 21st successor and head of Shino School of Kodo, gave a lecture on Kodo (traditional incense­smelling ceremony), describing its content as well as its history—both its past and its future. After the lecture, crystal ball player Ms. Asami Ishizuka gave a demonstration on the crystal ball which sound is said to be close to the sounds of the Gion Shoja bells of “The Tale of the Heike.” As always, Naoki Inose, director of the Japanese Civilization Institute moderated the lecture. The lecture provided us with the opportunity to learn about our modern world, while learning about the Japanese culture. Broadly he perused the instructions from Lu2, widely he searched the Indian scriptures, and he wrote down [his findings] in Fujiaobian 輔教編 ("Compilation in aid of the Teaching") and Fei Han 非韓3 ("Refuting Han [Yu]"), thirty chapters in all. He came to the aid of the teachings of Śākya[muni, which] were already on the verge of collapsing. I was forced to withdraw4 to the village Nanmoku,5 [where] I 1 Song Mingjiao dashi is the Chinese priest Furi Qisong 佛日契嵩, a.k.a. Mingjiao-dashi. (N.B. The Japanese pronunciation of the name 契嵩 is "Kaisū.") Amongst other things, he was an exponent of the sanjiao heyi 三教合一 ("Unity of the Three Teachings"). Bussho kaisetsu daijiten lists six titles under his name. 2 The words "the instructions of Lu" are evidently opposed to the words "Indian scriptures," i.e. Buddhist texts. We value traditional hand-making, using natural materials and the unique mixing method. 1. Laboratory The laboratory inspects the quality of the natural perfume that is the main ingredient of incense sticks, makes research and development of new products, and carries out stringent control of the product smell. 2. Milling Aloes and sandalwoods are crushed into powder. 3. Blending About 10 different kinds of incense and dyes are blended with the original proportions. 4. Sieving Mixed materials are made uniform in a mixer and put through a sieve to remove impurities. 5. Kneading The materials are kneaded into clay-form materials. A single mass of the clay-form material is called "tama". 6. Extruding "Tama" is pressed through a hydraulic extruder to shape sticks. They are extruded on a tray and cut into a fixed length. 7. Straightening The sticks of incense are put on the board to be dried. In this process, the sticks that are not straight are removed while the rest of them are placed neatly. 8. Cutting The sticks of incense are cut in various lengths according to the uses. 9. Drying Natural drying is the most appropriate.     Encyclopedia of Shinto Chronological Supplement 『神道事典』巻末年表、英語版 Institute for Japanese Culture and Classics Kokugakuin University 2016 Preface This book is a translation of the chronology that appended Shinto jiten, which was compiled and edited by the Institute for Japanese Culture and Classics, Kokugakuin University. That volume was first published in 1994, with a revised compact edition published in 1999. The main text of Shinto jiten is translated into English and publicly available in its entirety at the Kokugakuin University website as "The Encyclopedia of Shinto" (EOS). This English edition of the chronology is based on the one that appeared in the revised version of the Jiten. It is already available online, but it is also being published in book form in hopes of facilitating its use.
