However, rhetorical concepts have existed in and been applied by Chinese people . - Rhetorical models and instruction exist in Cong-Meng philosophy and have influenced communication among the people . This study is designed to isol�te rhetorical concepts from Cong-Meng philosophy and to determine the influence of that rhetorical tradition on current speeches by Chinese speakers in the Republic of China. Pu�pose of the Study The purpose of the study wa s to determine the nature of the rhetorical tradition in China and its influence on the current rhetorical situation in the Republic of China . Speeches delivered from 1975 to 1983 were examined to see whether this tradition still influences speakers . This study sought to find the relationship of Chinese ·traditional rhetoric to modern rhetoric in the ROC . Answers to these questions were sought : 1. What is the rhetorical tradition of China as found in the philosophy of Confucius and Mencius? 2 2. Does this rhetorical tradition still influence speakers in Taiwan , Republic of China? To answer these major questions7 the following questions were considered . 1. What rhetorical concepts are found in the ideas of Confucius? 2. What rhetorical concepts are found in the ideas of Mencius ? 3 . To what extent does the Chinese rhetorical tradition include concepts similar to the Wes tern rhetorical tradition? 4 . Does an examination of the speeche s of modern speakers in Taiwan , Republic of China , reveal the influence of traditional Chinese rhetorical concepts? Origin and Justification of the Study Confucius and Mencius tried to put their idealism to practical use in their ages but they did not succeed under the situations of those days . Yet, by the way of peripatetic rhetoric and education they had tremendous . impact on the society . Their rhetoric emerged from some ten schools of thought and still has influence . Its struc­ ture has not been formalized . My father taught Chinese literature and Chinese cul­ ture emphasizing Cong-Meng learning for thirty years until his death. His teaching and his efforts to live the ideals 3 which he taught had great impact on his own community and the culture of central Taiwan . He was recognized as a great man and was called "The Sage of Tsao Tun .. " After his death people built a hall and made a statue in memory of him. This, again , makes me want to know the answers to questions this study will investigate . In recent_years , the Republic of-China in Taiwan stands stably in the torrent of the international situations . The trad�tional rhetoric may have influenced the rhetorical situation from 1975 to 1983 in Taiwan . This study attempted to clarify any such influence . An examination of research materials available justifies a study of the influence of the Chinese rhetorical tradition on current speeches. Justification·of the Study Through Examina­ tion of Cong-Meng Philosophy A reading of the works of Confucius and Mencius revealed varied advice to speakers . The following excerpts suggested the existence of a Cong-Meng rhetoric : Confucius said, "Clever words and ins inuating appearances are seldom associated with benevo­ lence ." (The Analects, 1. 3.) Confucius said , "To spread hearsay is to cast away our virtue ." (The Analects , 17. 14 .) Confuc ius said , "The reason why the ancients did not readily give utterance is that they feared their .

    Augustine and the Art of Ruling in the Carolingian Imperial Period This volume is an investigation of how Augustine was received in the Carolingian period, and the elements of his thought which had an impact on Carolingian ideas of ‘state’, rulership and ethics. It focuses on Alcuin of York and Hincmar of Rheims, authors and political advisers to Charlemagne and to Charles the Bald, respectively. It examines how they used Augustinian political thought and ethics, as manifested in the De civitate Dei, to give more weight to their advice. A comparative approach sheds light on the differences between Charlemagne’s reign and that of his grandson. It scrutinizes Alcuin’s and Hincmar’s discussions of empire, rulership and the moral conduct of political agents during which both drew on the De civitate Dei, although each came away with a different understanding. By means of a philological–historical approach, the book offers a deeper reading and treats the Latin texts as political discourses defined by content and language. Sophia Moesch is currently an SNSF-funded postdoctoral fellow at the University of Oxford, working on a project entitled ‘Developing Principles of Good Govern- ance: Latin and Greek Political Advice during the Carolingian and Macedonian Reforms’.     chen gui denis twitchett Chen gui and Other Works Attributed to Empress Wu Zetian ome quarter-century ago, studies by Antonino Forte and Richard S Guisso greatly advanced our understanding of the ways in which the empress Wu Zetian ࣳঞ֚ made deliberate and sophisticated use of Buddhist materials both before and after declaring herself ruler of a new Zhou ࡌʳdynasty in 690, in particular the text of Dayun jing Օႆᆖ in establishing her claim to be a legitimate sovereign.1 However, little attention has ever been given to the numerous political writings that had earlier been compiled in her name. These show that for some years before the demise of her husband emperor Gaozong in 683, she had been at considerable pains to establish her credentials as a potential ruler in more conventional terms, and had commissioned the writing of a large series of political writings designed to provide the ideologi- cal basis for both a new style of “Confucian” imperial rule and a new type of minister. All save two of these works were long ago lost in China, where none of her writings seems to have survived the Song, and most may not have survived the Tang. We are fortunate enough to possess that titled ๵ complete with its commentary, and also a fragmentary۝ Chen gui copy of the work on music commissioned in her name, Yue shu yaolu ᑗ ஼૞ᙕ,2 only thanks to their preservation in Japan. Fugal theory according to musica poetica sources includes both contrapuntal devices and structural principles. Johann Mattheson’s dispositio model for organizing instrumental music provides an approach to comprehending the process of Baroque composition. His view on the construction of a subject also offers a way to observe a subject’s transformation in the fugal process. While fugal writing was considered the essential compositional technique for developing musical ideas in the Baroque era, a successful musical-rhetorical dispositio can shape the fugue from a simple subject into a convincing and coherent work. This dissertation is a study of Thomas Aquinas’s (1225–1274) and Godfrey of Fontaines’s (d. 1306) moral philosophies. In this study, I conduct a detailed analysis of two Aristotelian commitments concerning the character virtues, namely, The Plurality of the Character Virtues and The Connection of the Character Virtues. Both Aquinas and Godfrey think that there are many distinct character virtues (such as moderation and justice), however, one cannot (perfectly) possess these character virtues in separation from each other. In Chapter I, it is established that Aquinas believes in the plurality of the character virtues not because of a specific account of the human soul, but because he is committed to a plurality in what he calls “the notion of goodness.” In Chapter II, it is argued that Aquinas’s account of virtuous action requires that there be a likeness between a person and their actions in terms of the notion of goodness explored in Chapter I.

    AUGUSTINE ON SUFFERING AND ORDER: PUNISHMENT IN CONTEXT BY SAMANTHA ELIZABETH THOMPSON A Thesis Submitted in Conformity with the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Philosophy University of Toronto © Samantha Elizabeth Thompson 2010 Augustine on Suffering and Order: Punishment in Context Samantha Elizabeth Thompson Doctor of Philosophy Department of Philosophy University of Toronto 2010 Abstract Augustine of Hippo argues that all suffering is the result of the punishment of sin. Misinterpretations of his meaning are common since isolated statements taken from his works do give misleading and contradictory impressions. This dissertation assembles a comprehensive account of Augustine’s understanding of the causes of suffering to show that these views are substantive and internally consistent. The argument of the dissertation proceeds by confronting and resolving the apparent problems with Augustine’s views on sin and punishment from within the broader framework of his anthropology and metaphysics. The chief difficulty is that Augustine gives two apparently irreconcilable accounts of suffering as punishment. In the first, suffering is viewed as self-inflicted because sin is inherently self-damaging. In the second, God inflicts suffering in response to sin. This dissertation argues that these views are united by Augustine’s concern with the theme of ‘order.’ The first account, it argues, is actually an expression of Augustine’s doctrine that evil is the privation of good; since good is for Augustine synonymous with order, we can then see why he views all affliction as the concrete experience of disorder brought about by sin. This context in turn allows us to see that, by invoking the ii notion of divinely inflicted punishment in both its retributive and remedial forms, Augustine wants to show that disorder itself is embraced by order, either because disorder itself must obey laws, or because what is disordered can be reordered.

    Review to Chinese Old Maps and Recent Study Progress* Wang Jun (Chinese Academy of Surveying and Mapping, Beijing, 100039) [email protected] Abstract: Ancient Map is a significant constitution of historical culture treasure, which symbolizes the sovereignty, the national territory and the accumulation of geographical knowledge. The remarkable achievement of Chinese ancient cartography, which aggregated much knowledge and mapping techniques, has been recognized internationally. This paper draws an outline of the history of Chinese cartography, with several sample illustrations, and presents a brief review to the study achievements in this filed, from the approaches of project, scholar, publication, paper and digitalization work recently. Key words: history of cartography, academic review The History of cartography is inter-discipline among the geography, cartography and history of natural science. With reference to other civilizations in the world, the history of Chinese culture and science is long and continent, kept down much for investigating. In several periods, Chinese civilization, including cartography and geography, stood in the front at the ancient time. At the meantime of accumulate of materials and ideology, much maps or plots were produced, recorded, conserve and survive to present, which records the massage of technology of Chinese past surveying and mapping. These past map, are worthwhile for research with the view of history of cartography, and draw the world attention. According to the mapping methods and way of conservation, the catalogues of past maps are formal or official map, commercial published map and draft map in achieves. For the reason for the official map, which was believed to represent the status of past surveying and mapping, secretly conserved in the palace, or lost in war.

Created when an increasing number of women turned to the scholarly arts, in particular painting and poetry, these paintings documented the more receptive attitude of literati toward talented women and their support in the social and artistic lives of female intellectuals. These pictures show the women cultivating themselves through literati activities and poetic meditation in nature or gardens, common tropes in portraits of male scholars. The predominantly male patrons, painters, and colophon authors all took part in the formation of the women’s public identities as poets and artists; the first two determined the visual representations, and the third, through writings, confirmed and elaborated on the designated identities.
