E-mail : [email protected] Abstract Most West Indian snakes of the family Dipsadidae belong to the Subfamily Xenodontinae and Tribe Alsophiini. As recognized here, alsophiine snakes are exclusively West Indian and comprise 43 species distributed throughout the region. These snakes are slender and typically fast-moving (active foraging), diurnal species often called racers. For the last four decades, their classification into six genera was based on a study utilizing hemipenial and external morphology and which concluded that their biogeographic history involved multiple colonizations from the mainland. Although subsequent studies have mostly disagreed with that phylogeny and taxonomy, no major changes in the classification have been proposed until now. Here we present a DNA sequence analysis of five mitochondrial genes and one nuclear gene in 35 species and subspecies of alsophiines. Our results are more consistent with geography than previous classifications based on morphology, and support a reclassification of the species of alsophiines into seven named and three new genera: Alsophis Fitzinger (Lesser Antilles), Arrhyton Günther (Cuba), Borikenophis Hedges & Vidal gen. -

INTRODUCTION The South Asian Mastacembeloid fish family Chaudhuridae is popularly called as earthworm eels and this family includes six genera eight species. They are small, living in buried riparian vegetation and in bottom substrate or with substrate mixed with fine sand and clay. They differ externally from the family Mastacembelidae in having only soft fin instead of spines anteriorly in dorsal and anal fins [3] and the distributional range of this family is from Brahmaputra river basin, India. -

Z pohledu ochrany p írody se proto horské ekosystémy adí mezi jedno z nejcenn jších a nejohrožen jších prost edí v globálním m ítku. V rámci p edložené doktorské práce byly studovány vybrané potenciáln významné antropické vlivy na biodiverzitu horských bezlesí Hrubého Jeseníku prost ednictvím modelové bioindika ní skupiny brouk (Coleoptera). V prostoru primárního bezlesí arkto- alpinní tundry byl studován vliv sjezdových tratí a invazivní d eviny borovice kle e ( Pinus mugo ) na spole enstva brouk . Na území sekundárních bezlesí podhorských luk a pastvin byl hodnocen vliv zem dlského hospoda ení na brouky a další bezobratlé. Studium vlivu lyža ského areálu prokázalo, že p estože jsou sjezdové trat v alpínské zón zájmového území provozovány zp sobem šetrným k vegetaci, tak pr kazn m ní pvodní spole enstva epigeických brouk . -

Eduard Linsenmair* Cromeria occidentalis, a miniaturized gonorynchiform of up to 35 mm SL, occurs in the big river systems of West Africa: Niger, Benoué and Volta. It is a bottom dwelling fi sh that we collected on various substrates. We performed choice experiments in aquaria to test the substrate preference of this species. Although sand was preferred over coarse gravel, no substrate was chosen exclusively; surprisingly the naked glass bottom of the tank was preferred over all other substrates. Burrowing into the substrate is a very rare behaviour, at least under aquarium condi- tions. Cromeria occidentalis feeds on small particles, which are ingested by quick movements of the protractile jaws, or occasionally scraped from the substrate using keratinous unculi on the lips. Food particles are then concen- trated in the epibranchial organ situated between the fourth and fi fth gill arches. The intestinal tract of wild-caught specimens is about 1.5 times the body length and contained fi ne organic food particles that could not be identifi ed more specifi cally.
