'ITALY: ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF PHOTOGRAPHY' FROM SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION AT UD

DAYTON, Ohio- "Italy: One Hundred Years of Photography," a traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution, will be on display at the University of Dayton Kennedy Union Art Gallery June 20 through July 27. An opening reception with strolling musicians, food and beverages will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 26, in the gallery. Admission to the reception and the exhibit is free and open to the public. The exhibit is part of Dayton's "Commemoration 1492-1992" celebration of the SOOth anniversary of the voyage of Christopher Columbus. The celebration is sponsored by Dayton and Sinclair Community College. Works by some of the century's best photographers are included. Giacomo Brogi and James Anderson represent the Italian photography community and Alfred Eisenstaedt, Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, Henri <;artier-Bresson and Robert Capa also aim their cameras at Italian history and culture. The early photos, captured on glass-plate negatives, show the country's political unification and development from an agricultural to an industrial society. The battlefields of were recorded with the portable box camera, and the 35mm camera was used to portray the repressive fascist dictatorship that dominated Italy in the 1940s. A variety of photographic styles continues to follow Italian life through the present. The exhibit was organized and travels with the support of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES). Works for the exhibit were assembled by the Alinari Archives in Florence. Co-sponsors include the John Pirelli Lodge Order Sons of Italy. Gallery hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday beginning June 27; and 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays. The gallery will be closed July 3, 4 and 5.
