Lind | 773.702.0176 | [email protected] For Immediate Release “One of the most important Midwestern contributions to the development of American art” MONSTER ROSTER: EXISTENTIALIST ART IN POSTWAR CHICAGO RECEIVES FIRST MAJOR EXHIBITION, AT UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO’S SMART MUSEUM OF ART, FEBRUARY 11 – JUNE 12, 2016 Related programming highlights include film screenings, monthly Family Day activities, and a Monster Mash Up expert panel discussion (January 11, 2016) The Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago, 5550 S. Greenwood Avenue, will mount Monster Roster: Existentialist Art in Postwar Chicago, the first-ever major exhibition to examine the history and impact of the Monster Roster, a group of postwar artists that established the first unique Chicago style, February 11–June 12, 2016. The exhibition is curated by John Corbett and Jim Dempsey, independent curators and gallery owners; Jessica Moss, Smart Museum Curator of Contemporary Art; and Richard A. Born, Smart Museum Senior Curator. Monster Roster officially opens with a free public reception, Wednesday, February 10, 7–9pm featuring an in-gallery performance by the Josh Berman Trio. The Monster Roster was a fiercely independent group of mid-century artists, spearheaded by Leon Golub (1922–2004), which created deeply psychological works drawing on classical mythology, ancient art, and a shared persistence in depicting the figure during a period in which abstraction held sway in international art circles. “The Monster Roster represents the first group of artists in Chicago to assert its own style and approach—one not derived from anywhwere else—and is one of the most important Midwestern contributions to the development of American art,” said co-curator John Corbett.

    INTERSECTIONS ANNUAL REPORT FY2013 FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES This year has been a time of robust innovation at The Phillips Collection; we are truly living the “experiment station” that founder Duncan Phillips spoke about so eloquently. The Phillips’s many advances in technology, for example, include a new website that provides users with easy access to our art, videos, and events. This effort has been complemented by a robust presence on multimedia and social media platforms, an insightful blog, and the Education team’s innovative virtual gallery talks on Twitter. The Laib Wax Room, dedicated to our own Caroline Macomber (whose delightful presence on our Board we deeply miss), opened in March as a space for meditation, much like the Rothko Room. The Phil- lips’s commitment to engaging with living artists of our day mirrors the collecting vision of Gifford Phillips, a dear friend of the museum who passed away in April. Partial funds for the beeswax room were raised through the crowdsourcing platform Indiegogo, allowing dozens of supporters to be part of Phillips history. Innovations at the Phillips are not just expressed through new technology. From April 12 to May 2, Phillips educator Rachel Goldberg led workshops in Pakistan for more than 375 Pakistani emerging artists, students, museum professionals, and children about the power of art to create social change. This extremely successful partnership with the US Department of State affirms the universal connective power of art; discus- sions are underway to expand the program. Extending the Phillips’s mission abroad to create an internation- al dialogue through art is a new partnership with Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service.

    PRESS RELEASE PHILLIPS de PURY & COMPANY ANNOUCES AN EXHIBITION AND BOOK LAUNCH FOR PHOTOGRAPHER GUY BOURDIN IN NEW YORK MARCH 11-25, 2006 New York, February 22, 2006 -- Phillips de Pury & Company is pleased to announce a unique collaboration with Samuel Bourdin, the sole owner of the Guy Bourdin Estate, to represent and exclusively sell photographic prints. Guy Bourdin is considered to be one of the most daring and innovative artists in the world of 20th Century visual culture. A singular artist with the eye of a painter, Bourdin’s compelling and unique body of work has become an inspiration across many creative fields. His groundbreaking legacy represents a turning point in the history of fashion imagery. Simon de Pury, joined by Gerhard Steidl and Pascal Dangin of Steidldangin, is honored to host the launch of the newly published book, Guy Bourdin, A MESSAGE FOR YOU, published by Steidldangin. This two-volume edition was curated and written by Nicolle Meyer, edited by Shelly Verthime and introduced by Alber Elbaz. It focuses on Guy Bourdin's unique collaboration with Nicolle, one of his "mannequins fétiche". All of Volume I images will be exhibited as a series of 75 beautiful color prints, printed and produced by Pascal Dangin. In addition, Volume II images will be presented in the form of a slide projection. The exhibition will open with a book launch and private viewing on March 11th and will be open to the public through March 25th. These works will be shown in the second floor gallery at Phillips de Pury and Company in New York.

    MUSEUM BHAVAN GUIDE “Museum Bhavan is a living exhibition that will wax and wane with the lunar cycle.” Dayanita Singh This is the premiere of MUSEUM BHAVAN on its home ground — at the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, Delhi, it becomes a museum within a museum. MUSEUM BHAVAN is a collection of museums made by Dayanita Singh. They have previously been shown in London, Frankfurt and Chicago, and here, in Delhi, the artist has installed nine museums from the collection. Each holds old and new images, from the time Singh began photography in 1981 until the present. The architecture of the museums is integral to the realization of the images shown and stored in them. Each structure can be placed and opened out in different ways. It can hold around a hundred framed images, some on view, while others await their turn in the reserve collection kept inside the structure. All the museums have smaller structures within them, they can be displayed inside the museum or on the wall. The museums can form chambers for conversation and contemplation, with their own tables and stools, as in the Museum of Chance. They can also be joined to one another in different ways to form a labyrinth. The internal relationships among them have evolved through the endless process of editing, sequencing and archiving that sustains the formal thinking essential to the realization of Singh’s work. So, within the extended family of MUSEUM BHAVAN, it is now becoming clear that File Museum and Museum of Little Ladies are sibling museums, while Museum of Photography and Museum of Furniture are cousins.

VERSION 2 Map Entrance Contents TBC Introduction Cecil Beaton (1904–80) was one of the great creative figures of the British twentieth century. Chiefly known as a photographer of portraits and fashion, through his work for Vogue magazine from 1924 to 1979, he was also recognised as a significant war photographer. An illustrator and caricaturist, a writer and commentator on taste and manners, Beaton was a theatre designer and art director of world renown and an influential stylist of his own homes. This exhibition focuses on Beaton’s early years. Born in Hampstead to a then prosperous timber merchant, Ernest Beaton and his wife Esther (‘Etty’), Cecil was first given a camera in 1914, aged ten. His first subjects were his mother and his willing sisters, Nancy and Barbara (‘Baba’). His transformation from middle-class suburban schoolboy to dazzling society figure against the backdrop of the Roaring Twenties and the Age of Jazz revealed a social mobility barely thinkable before the First World War. Here, then, are the Bright Young Things who brought an extraordinary era vividly to life and in so doing, nurtured and refined a remarkable photographic talent. The strength of his singular vision is such that, when we think of the Bright Young Things, we think of them in Beaton’s costumes, through Beaton’s lens and as Beaton’s friends.
