Throughout the fourteen years of its existence, encompassing the Irlande Spanish Civil War and the Second World War, the magazine covers a neglected period of transition in the evolution of modernism. Through his editorial n° 4 policy and a susceptible interpretation of the Zeitgeist, Lehmann voices the particular torments of his generation, too young to have participated in - 2011 the First World War, but deeply affected by it. -

CY-2019-067 A SIAM SOCIETY STUDY TRIP A Cultural Trip to Tunisia Tuesday 3 to Friday 13 March 2020 With Khun Bilaibhan Sampatisiri Honorary Advisor to the Siam Society Council The Republic of Tunisia is a country in North Africa, on the Mediterranean Sea. It is the northernmost country in Africa and at almost 165,000 square kilometres in area, the smallest country in the Maghreb region of North Africa. As of 2019, its population is estimated just under 11.7 million. Its name is derived from its capital city, Tunis, located on the country’s northeast coast. Northern Tunisia has a typical Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winter. The mountains of the north-west occasionally get snow. Annual rainfall ranges from 1,000 mm in the north down to 150 mm in the south, although some Saharan area go for years without rain. From October to beginning of December is ideal for touring. At the beginning of recorded history, Tunisia was inhabited by Berber tribes. Its coast was settled by Phoenicians starting as early as the 10th century BC. The city of Carthage was founded in the 9th century BC by Phoenician and Cypriot settlers. After the series of wars with Greek city-states of Sicily in the 5th century BC, Carthage rose to power and eventually became the dominant civilisation in the Western Mediterranean. A Carthaginian invasion of Italy led by Hannibal during the Second Punic War, one of a series of wars with Rome, nearly crippled the rise of Roman power. After the Battle in 149 BC, Carthage was conquered by Rome, the region became one of the main granaries of Rome and was fully Latinised. -

A WALK THROUGH THE GALLERY MARGARET PLASS The new African Gallery has been designed to exhibit, simply and honestly, a selection of sculptures from our permanent collections. Proudly we present them as works of art; where possible they are arranged in tribal groups for convenience and comparative study. They are labeled briefly and clearly. Here are the materials from which our visitors may form a just view of the special characteristics and merits of Negro art. For more than half a century our Museum has been enriched by acces- sions of African sculpture, mainly by purchase and partly by gifts, to the end that our permanent collections are the largest and most varied in style in America. The following descriptive notes are not to be construed as an attempt at a catalogue of the exhibition; the serious student may have access to fully documented formal catalogues should he apply to the Museum staff. In Dr. Coon's introduction he has given us the anthropological and ethno- grapbical background of the people who produced this art, working within the framework of their tribal traditions. Here in this book, with their photographs, are small synopses of what we know of these sculptures, and what we guess. We all have conscious, and sometimes unconscious, difficulty in understanding such works of art; the philosophical barrier that lies in the way of full appreciation is almost too difficult to hurdle. Many writers have tried to explain the magico-religious significance, the strength and directness of African art; few have succeeded. Perhaps these notes are mere hints and suggestions, but we hope that they may sometimes be stimulating as well as factual. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Modern Women9s Poetry 1910-1929 Jane Dowson Abstract In tracing the publications and publishing initiatives of early twentieth-century women poets in Britain, this thesis reviews their work in the context of a male-dominated literary environment and the cultural shifts relating to the First World War, women’s suffrage and the growth of popular culture. The first two chapters outline a climate of new rights and opportunities in which women became public poets for the first time. They ran printing presses and bookshops, edited magazines and wrote criticism. They aimed to align themselves with a male tradition which excluded them and insisted upon their difference. Defining themselves antithetically to the mythologised poetess of the nineteenth century and popular verse, they developed strategies for disguising their gender through indeterminate speakers, fictional dramatisations or anti-realist subversions. -

Miller ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The same year I began my Ph.D. work at the University of Michigan, my father lost the coal-mining job he had worked for over twenty years. That particular confluence of events had a profound effect on me, and I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the ways in which my personal feelings of anger and frustration—my sense of being somehow out-of-place—influenced my thinking and this project. Certainly, it was one of the catalysts for my deep interest in the U.S. literary Left. Like so many others, I am indebted to Alan Wald for my understanding of Left literature and culture. Alan has been, probably more than he knows, an example of the kind of scholar I hope to be—even, I admit, an ideal ego of sorts. I continue to be as awed by his deep knowledge as I am by his humility and generosity. Yopie Prins taught me how to read poetry when I already thought I knew how, and my conversations with her over the past five years have shaped my thinking in remarkable ways. From my first days in Ann Arbor, June Howard has been a source of intellectual guidance, and her insights on my work and the profession have been a sustaining influence. -
John Lehmann and the Acclimatisation of Modernism in Britain
JOHN LEHMANN AND THE ACCLIMATISATION OF MODERNISM A.T. Tolley It is easy to see the cultural history of modernism in terms of key volumes, such as Auden’s Poems of 1930, and to see their reception in the light of significant reviews by writers who themselves have come to have a regarded place in the history of twentieth-century literature. Yet this is deceptive and does not give an accurate impression of the reaction of most readers. W.B. Yeats, in a broadcast on “Modern Poetry” in 1936 could say of T.S. Eliot: “Tristam and Iseult were not a more suitable theme than Paddington Railway Station.”1 Yeats was then an old man; but most of Yeats’s listeners would have shared the hostility. Yet, in the coming years, acclimatisation had taken place. Eliot’s Little Gidding, published separately as a pamphlet in December 1942, sold 16,775 copies – a remarkable number for poetry, even in those wartime years when poetry had such impact. John Lehmann had a good deal to do with the acclimatisation of modernist idiom, most notably through his editing of New Writing, New Writing & Daylight and The Penguin New Writing, the last of which had had at its most popular a readership of about 100,000. The cultural impact of modernism came slowly in Britain, most notably through the work of Eliot and Virginia Woolf. The triumph of modernism came with its second generation, through the work of Auden, MacNeice and Dylan Thomas in poetry, and less markedly through the work of Isherwood and Henry Green in prose. -
