One displays neuroscientist Santiago Ramon y Cajal’s drawings of the brain, which are not only beautiful but remarkably clear and accurate. Eighty of his drawings, which date to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, will be shown alongside contemporary visualizations of the brain. The gallery’s second exhibition is devoted to Baya Mahieddine (known as Baya), an Algerian artist who has yet to gain international recognition.     EIGHTEEN MAJOR NEW YORK AREA MUSEUMS PARTICIPATE IN INSTAGRAM SWAP THE FRICK COLLECTION PAIRS WITH NEW-YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY In a first-of-its-kind collaboration, eighteen major New York City area institutions have joined forces to celebrate their unique collections and spaces on Instagram. All day today, February 2, the museums will post photos from this exciting project. Each participating museum paired with a sister institution, then set out to take photographs at that institution, capturing objects and moments that resonated with their own collections, exhibitions, and themes. As anticipated, each organization’s unique focus offers a new perspective on their partner museum. Throughout the day, the Frick will showcase its recent visit to the New-York Historical Society on its Instagram feed using the hashtag #MuseumInstaSwap. We Found Us will be on view in The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education while the Studio Museum constructs a new building on the site of their longtime home on West 125th Street. We Found Us reflects on the personal and collective development of the fifteen artists in this year’s program, capturing what they find significant in their daily lives. The exhibition demonstrates their shared interest in storytelling, technical experimentation, and the possibilities of photography as a channel for expression. We Found Us is a declaration born as the artists’, grappling throughout the residency with themes of selfhood, found new perspectives on the world through their cameras and one another.     INTERSECTIONS ANNUAL REPORT FY2013 FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES This year has been a time of robust innovation at The Phillips Collection; we are truly living the “experiment station” that founder Duncan Phillips spoke about so eloquently. The Phillips’s many advances in technology, for example, include a new website that provides users with easy access to our art, videos, and events. This effort has been complemented by a robust presence on multimedia and social media platforms, an insightful blog, and the Education team’s innovative virtual gallery talks on Twitter. The Laib Wax Room, dedicated to our own Caroline Macomber (whose delightful presence on our Board we deeply miss), opened in March as a space for meditation, much like the Rothko Room. The Phil- lips’s commitment to engaging with living artists of our day mirrors the collecting vision of Gifford Phillips, a dear friend of the museum who passed away in April. Partial funds for the beeswax room were raised through the crowdsourcing platform Indiegogo, allowing dozens of supporters to be part of Phillips history. Innovations at the Phillips are not just expressed through new technology. From April 12 to May 2, Phillips educator Rachel Goldberg led workshops in Pakistan for more than 375 Pakistani emerging artists, students, museum professionals, and children about the power of art to create social change. This extremely successful partnership with the US Department of State affirms the universal connective power of art; discus- sions are underway to expand the program.
