The papers cover Barrington's official career, most particularly as M.P. for Plymouth (1754-1778), Secretary at War (21 Nov. 1755-21 March 1761 & 19 July 1765-16 Dec. 1778) and Chancellor of the Exchequer (21 March 1761-8 May 1762). Barrington also acted as a Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty (1746-1754), Master of the Great Wardrobe (1754-1755), Treasurer of the Navy (8 May 1762-19 July 1765) and joint Postmaster General (9 Jan.-April 1782). For a more detailed review of Barrington's political life see Dictionary of National Biography, Vol.III page 295. The papers served as a basis for The Political Life of William Wildman, Viscount Barrington compiled by his brother Shute, Bishop of Durham, in 1814.In addition, there are a number of estate papers (mainly accounts), personal papers, papers relating to local matters in Berkshire, and papers relating to other members of the Barrington family. Partly French, Latin. Partly copies, printed and typewritten. Accepted by the Treasury in lieu of tax, together with Add. Ch. 76991-77011. Formerly held by the Ipswich and East Suffolk Record Office who drew up a Preliminary Schedule and a draft list covering most of the collection.Mostly paper.
