John Thomas Mullock: What His Books Reveal Ágnes Juhász-Ormsby The Episcopal Library of St. John’s is among the few nineteenth- century libraries that survive in their original setting in the Atlantic provinces, and the only one in Newfoundland and Labrador.1 It was established by John Thomas Mullock (1807–69), Roman Catholic bishop of Newfoundland and later of St. John’s, who in 1859 offered his own personal collection of “over 2500 volumes as the nucleus of a Public Library.” The Episcopal Library in many ways differs from the theological libraries assembled by Mullock’s contemporaries.2 When compared, for example, to the extant collection of the Catholic bishop of Victoria, Charles John Seghers (1839–86), whose life followed a similar pattern to Mullock’s, the division in the founding collection of the Episcopal Library between the books used for “private” as opposed to “public” theological study becomes even starker. Seghers’s books showcase the customary stock of a theological library with its bulky series of manuals of canon law, collections of conciliar and papal acts and bullae, and practical, dogmatic, moral theological, and exegetical works by all the major authors of the Catholic tradition.3 In contrast to Seghers, Mullock’s library, although containing the constitutive elements of a seminary library, is a testimony to its found- er’s much broader collecting habits. Mullock’s books are not restricted to his philosophical and theological studies or to his interest in univer- sal church history. Other organisations: Natural England, RSPB, Historic England and National Trust are in the process of going through their organisation’s approval process. The WHS Coordination Unit (WHSCU) would be grateful for written endorsements by the end of 2015. The WHSCU are very happy to meet with any partner organisation to explain the Management Plan to their members. WHSCU Action Plan BT circulated a table which outlined how SS and BT will cover both local and thematic responsibilities. -

St Cuthbert Story
Cuthbert was born about the year 634 (about 1400 years ago!) He lived in Melrose in Southern Scotland. He liked to walk in the hills. One night, when he was helping to look after sheep he thought he saw angels taking a soul to heaven. A few days later he found out Saint Aidan had died. Cuthbert decided to become a monk. He became a monk at the monastery in Melrose where he met Boisil, the prior of the monastery. Boisil taught Cuthbert for 6 years. Before Boisil died, he told Cuthbert he would be a Bishop one day. Cuthbert liked to visit lonely farms and villages. Crowds of people came to visit him. He lived at Melrose monastery for 13 years. Cuthbert was sent to be Prior of Lindisfarne. Cuthbert taught the monks the new Roman church rules. Some of the monks did not like the new rules and Cuthbert had to be very patient with them. After 12 years, Cuthbert went to live on a quiet island 7 miles away from Lindisfarne. Cuthbert lived on this small island for 3 years. He grew barley and vegetables and his monks dug a well and built a guest house for visitors. The King asked Cuthbert to be Bishop of Hexham. Cuthbert didn’t want to but he still remembered what Boisil had said. Cuthbert did not want to be Bishop of Hexham but agreed to be Bishop of Lindisfarne instead. He was very sad to have to leave his small island. Cuthbert was Bishop of Lindisfarne for 2 years. The people loved him. -

Cathedral music and the First World War: A view from the Archives of Durham, St Paul’s, and York Minster Enya Helen Lauren Doyle Master of Arts (by research) University of York Music July 2016 Abstract This thesis explores the impact of the First World War on English Cathedral music, both during the long four years and in its aftermath. Throughout this study, reference will be made specifically to three English cathedrals: York Minster, Durham and St Paul’s. The examination will be carried out chronologically, in three parts: before the war (part one), during the war (part two) and after the war (part three). Each of these three parts consists of two chapters. Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 help to set the scene and offer context. In chapters 2- 5 there is a more focused and systematic investigation into the day-to-day administrative challenges that the Cathedrals faced, followed in each chapter by an assessment of the musical programme. Chapter 6 examines the long-term impact of the war on British cathedral music, especially in the centenary anniversary years. The Great War is often perceived as a complete break with the past, yet it also represented an imaginative continuity of sorts. As such, 1914-18 can be seen as a period of twilight in a lot of senses. The war managed to bring the flirtation with modernism, which was undoubtedly happening at the beginning of the century, to at least a temporary halt. Through the examination of the archives of the three cathedrals, this thesis investigates how the world war left its mark on the musical life of this portion of English religious and music life, during and after the war, drawing national comparisons as well as showing the particulars of each cathedral. -

Durham Cathedral: Building time line with significant historic events Pre Conquest 634 Oswald reclaimed the Kingdom of Northumbria from Penda of Mercia, reigning for 9 years as a Christian King. He brought Aidan from Iona and installed him as first Bishop of Lindisfarne. 641 Oswiu, brother of Oswald was made King of Northumbria after Penda defeated and killed Oswald. Oswiu ruled for 28 years. 687 Death of Cuthbert, the ascetic Prior and later Bishop of Lindisfarne (born 625). After his death the monks at Lindisfarne elevated him to sainthood in 698. The Lindisfarne Gospels are completed around this time. 793 Following the Viking attack on Holy Island and the sacking of the monastery there, the monks moved to the old Roman town of Chester le Street in 795, carrying Cuthbert’s coffin to the new priory site. 865-8 First Viking invasion by Danes, using the Humber, Trent and Ouse, they penetrated both Northumbria and Mercia appropriating territory for settlement. The Anglo Saxons called them the ‘heathen army’. 954 King Eadred conquers the Scandinavian Kingdom of York, Yorkshire and Lancashire are carved out of Northumbria, and Northumbria’s southern boundary moves from the Humber to the Tees. 995 Cuthbert's community of monks see the defensive potential of the rocky site at Durham situated on a loop of the River Wear and decide to move their church there and establish an Episcopal See under Bishop Aldhun. The first church constructed is of wood, but it is rebuilt in 998 in stone. 1020 The church is again rebuilt as a much larger stone Cathedral, completed in 1042 in the Saxon style, known as the ‘White Church’.
