Degree awarded June 2012 ii © 2012 Austin Elliott Kaiser iii DISSERTATION ABSTRACT Austin Elliott Kaiser Doctor of Philosophy Department of History June 2012 Title: Michael Ramsey, Archbishop of Canterbury: Incarnational Anglicanism and British Society, 1928-1974 This dissertation analyzes the theology and politics of Michael Ramsey between his ordination in 1928 and his retirement in 1974. Ramsey entered the priesthood after a burgeoning career in law and Liberal politics. I argue that Ramsey’s later political activism as Archbishop of Canterbury was a continuation of his early political engagement at Cambridge. However, the Anglican Incarnational theological tradition exemplified in the writings of F. D. Maurice, Charles Gore, and William Temple exerted a powerful influence on Ramsey’s politics after he entered the priesthood. This dissertation locates Ramsey within that Incarnational tradition, and I argue that the Incarnation was the locus not only of his theological writings and his historical writings on Anglican theology, but also of his political activism in the 1960s and early 1970s. I draw heavily on unpublished letters and autobiographical essays from the Ramsey Papers at Lambeth Palace, as well as on his speeches to ordinands and in House of Lords. Two chapters contain analyses of nearly all of Ramsey’s published corpus, with one devoted to his historical writings and the other to his social theological writings. A third chapter analyzes three examples of Ramsey’s activism at Canterbury (on legal reform for homosexual acts, the Rhodesian crisis of 1965, and Commonwealth immigration) within iv the context of his Incarnational social theology. Overview In a clerical career that lasted over sixty years, Michael Ramsey served the Church of England in several capacities. His writings made him one of the most renowned British theologians of the century. As an intellectual historian, he made major contributions to historical understanding of Anglican thought. His academic career culminated in one of Britain’s most prestigious appointments as Regius Professor of Divinity at Cambridge. His episcopal career led him in a remarkably swift ascension from Bishop of Durham to Archbishop of Canterbury in nine years. His tenure as Primate of All England has been widely reckoned as one of the most distinguished since the death of Archbishop Archibald Campbell Tait in 1882. Michael Ramsey was born in 1904. The son of a Cambridge mathematics don, he was raised in a comfortably middle-class family that valued intellectual accomplishment and academic achievement. His older brother, Frank, was a noted mathematician and economist whom John Maynard Keynes later memorialized in his Essays in Biography . Frank was a peripheral figure in the Bloomsbury circle, and his early death at 26 was a devastating loss to his younger brother. Ramsey left home to attend Repton, where his headmaster was the future Archbishop of Canterbury, Geoffrey Fisher. He then attended Magdalene, his father’s college at Cambridge, and briefly studied law before switching to theology and pursuing Holy Orders. While an 1 undergraduate, Ramsey participated avidly in Liberal Party politics. He spoke at campaign rallies for Liberal candidates and stood successfully for President of the Cambridge Union, an important position which many notable British politicians have used to launch their political careers. In the twilight of his career, former Prime Minister H. H. Asquith himself was so impressed by Ramsey’s speaking that he predicted the future archbishop would one day be leader of the Liberal Party. After he entered the Church, Ramsey’s early career alternated between brief periods in pastoral work and longer periods in academe. He spent the 1940s teaching theology at Durham University. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response.

    John Thomas Mullock: What His Books Reveal Ágnes Juhász-Ormsby The Episcopal Library of St. John’s is among the few nineteenth- century libraries that survive in their original setting in the Atlantic provinces, and the only one in Newfoundland and Labrador.1 It was established by John Thomas Mullock (1807–69), Roman Catholic bishop of Newfoundland and later of St. John’s, who in 1859 offered his own personal collection of “over 2500 volumes as the nucleus of a Public Library.” The Episcopal Library in many ways differs from the theological libraries assembled by Mullock’s contemporaries.2 When compared, for example, to the extant collection of the Catholic bishop of Victoria, Charles John Seghers (1839–86), whose life followed a similar pattern to Mullock’s, the division in the founding collection of the Episcopal Library between the books used for “private” as opposed to “public” theological study becomes even starker. Seghers’s books showcase the customary stock of a theological library with its bulky series of manuals of canon law, collections of conciliar and papal acts and bullae, and practical, dogmatic, moral theological, and exegetical works by all the major authors of the Catholic tradition.3 In contrast to Seghers, Mullock’s library, although containing the constitutive elements of a seminary library, is a testimony to its found- er’s much broader collecting habits. Mullock’s books are not restricted to his philosophical and theological studies or to his interest in univer- sal church history. In this country few will probably be aware of the festivities, but many would still acknowledge the tireless efforts of this royal octogenarian on behalf of her country and the Commonwealth. In the holdings of the Fisher Library is a handsome souvenir of the Queen’s reign, the so-called “Coronation Bible,” printed at the Oxford University Press under the direction of Charles Batey in 953. Batey had worked at the Press since 929, and assumed the role of Printer to the University in 946. One of his great passions in that capacity was to preserve and make better known the ancient types that had been used at the venerable Press throughout its history. The crisp, clean font chosen for the Coronation Bible is a credit to his expertise in this field. The composition of the Bible actually began in February of 952, shortly after the death of King George VI; among its many distinguishing characteristics is the fact that the entire book was the work of a single compositor. While the vast majority of the Bibles in this edition were printed on regular paper and expressly intended for pulpit use, an additional twenty-five were printed on too bulky to be used gracefully, while the of Oxford University Press in 930.

    ONE STEP FORWARD, TWO STEPS BACK: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF ANGLICAN AND ROMAN CATHOLIC BILATERAL RELATIONS FROM A THEOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE James N. Amanze Abstract ___________________________________________________________________________ This paper is a critical examination of Anglican-Roman Catholic bilateral relations from a theological perspective. The main argument of the paper is that while the Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches consider themselves to be in a special relationship as a result of a number of theological agreements reached over the past forty years aimed at bringing them closer together than ever before, they are far from achieving visible church unity. The achievements made over the years, in the form of agreed theological texts have, from time to time, been derailed by subtle theological differences between the two church traditions. This can best be described in the words of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin “One step forward, two steps back”. The paper concludes that given the small amount of progress, which is pushed back by a large amount of setbacks, church unity is unattainable. Introduction Ecumenism, that is, the activities to achieve church unity after the 16th Century Protestant Reformation in Germany has been the hallmark of the church in the Twentieth and Twenty First Centuries.     Building community: Anglo-Catholicism and social action Jeremy Morris Some years ago the Guardian reporter Stuart Jeffries spent a day with a Salvation Army couple on the Meadows estate in Nottingham. When he asked them why they had gone there, he got what to him was obviously a baffling reply: “It's called incarnational living. It's from John chapter 1. You know that bit about 'Jesus came among us.' It's all about living in the community rather than descending on it to preach.”1 It is telling that the phrase ‘incarnational living’ had to be explained, but there is all the same something a little disconcerting in hearing from the mouth of a Salvation Army officer an argument that you would normally expect to hear from the Catholic wing of Anglicanism. William Booth would surely have been a little disconcerted by that rider ‘rather than descending on it to preach’, because the early history and missiology of the Salvation Army, in its marching into working class areas and its street preaching, was precisely about cultural invasion, expressed in language of challenge, purification, conversion, and ‘saving souls’, and not characteristically in the language of incarnationalism. Yet it goes to show that the Army has not been immune to the broader history of Christian theology in this country, and that it too has been influenced by that current of ideas which first emerged clearly in the middle of the nineteenth century, and which has come to be called the Anglican tradition of social witness.
