Saturday, October 24, 2020 9 – 9:45 a.m. Morning Prayer and bishop’s address 9:45 – 11:45 a.m. Business Session #1 • Call to Order and announcements • Orientation to voting (using red/green cards, online voting training) • Opening business (Special Rule of Order, adoption of agenda, approval of minutes, etc.) • Visual voting using red/green cards (i.e. consent calendars; granting seat, voice and vote; etc.) • Elections to Council of Trustees and Disciplinary Board (online voting) • Mission plan • Apportionment schedule • Commissioning of those who have received a bishop’s appointment or nomination or who have been elected at this convention 11:45 a.m. Noonday Prayer in each minister Noon – 12:45 a.m. Lunch break Those gathering at their minster location are encouraged to leave the building for their lunch so that the room can be “aired” out before gathering again for the afternoon session. The safest option is to eat individually or outside, practicing safe distancing of 6 feet or more. 1 – 2 p.m. Minsters meet to review year one of the Minster Project and moving into year two, consider action items from the task forces to adopt 2 p.m. Business Session #2 (if needed) Awards Convention Eucharist with Spiritual Communion Joined and knitted together • The 161st Annual Convention 3 Special Rule of Order for the 2020 Annual Convention The 2020 Annual Meeting of the Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas shall be conducted through use of an Internet meeting service designated by the Chair of Convention that supports anony- mous voting and visible displays: (i) identifying those participating, (ii) identifying those seeking recognition to speak, (iii) showing (or permitting the retrieval of) the text of pending motions, and (iv) showing the results of votes. This electronic meeting of the Convention shall otherwise be subject to all rules adopted by the Convention to govern its annual meeting, which may include any reasonable limitations on, and requirements for, mem- bers’ participation. This and any such rules adopted by the Convention shall supersede any conflicting rules in Roberts Rules of Order. In addition, the following procedures shall apply: A. Unless otherwise directed for reasons of public health, members of the convention are encour- aged to gather at their minster site. Those wishing to join convention online only may do so. Voting members of convention will be given a link to a Zoom meeting (Internet meeting service) and shall maintain Internet and audio access throughout the meeting whenever present, but shall sign out upon any departure before adjournment. a. Main minster gatherings will have a single Zoom login and will transmit a broadcast of the full gathering to the online meeting. Minster broadcasts shall be named by the Minster name: e.g. Free State Minster b. Individuals shall rename themselves, so their Minster and full name is identifiable: e.g. Tallgrass – Sally Sue B. An anonymous vote conducted through the designated online balloting service (AssociationVoting. com) shall be deemed a written ballot vote, fulfilling any requirement in the Constitution and Canons or rules that a vote be conducted by written ballot. Votes shall be deemed anonymous so long as votes cast by an individual are available only to the administrator of the voting system. a. Each voting member will need access to a smart device with the ability to open a web browser: smart phone, tablet or computer. b. Balloting will be authenticated by information provided during registration: emails and last names. i. If re-balloting is necessary, a short code will also be necessary and will be communicated at the time of balloting. c. The link to the ballot (vote.associationvoting.com/edok/) will be communicated via email ahead of the meeting and will be shared during the meeting at time of voting. C. Except when a written ballot is required, business will be conducted by visual voting using red and green cards. Appeal of the Chair’s visual determination is in order. Business may be conducted by unanimous consent. 4 Joined and knitted together • The 161st Annual Convention Special Rule of Order for the 2020 Annual Convention D. Members seeking recognition from the Chair shall identify themselves: a. At Minster gatherings: Members shall approach the Zoom Verger and present themselves to the camera. The Verger will identify (in the Zoom Chat window) the person by name and posi- tion on the matter. b. Individual Log-Ins: Shall identify their desire to speak by typing their name and position on the matter. i. Examples: 1. Bob Smith speaking For 2. Jane Johnson speaking Against 3. Mark McMillan point of order c. The Chair will recognize speakers at which point they will be allowed to unmute themselves. E. The presence of a quorum shall be established by the online list of participating members. F. Each member is responsible for their audio and Internet connections; no action shall be invalidated on the grounds that the loss of, or poor quality of, a member’s individual connection prevented par- ticipation in the meeting. G. The Chair may cause or direct the disconnection or muting of a member’s connection if it is caus- ing undue interference with the meeting. The Chair’s decision to do so, which is subject to an non- debatable appeal that can be made by any member, shall be announced during the meeting and recorded in the minutes. H. This service gives us an opportunity to celebrate those whose generosity in the past has enriched the lives of Durham’s great institutions today and to look forward to a future that is full of opportunity. On 27 January 1914, the then Dean, Herbert Hensley Henson, revived the Commemoration of Founders and Benefactors. It had been written into the Cathedral Statutes of 1554 but for whatever reason had not been observed for centuries.

While looking at various narratives – predominantly about saints in historical and contemporary contexts – attached to these cathedrals, I also aim to offer some glimpses into how people interact with and relate to space. I argue that beliefs and narratives about saints play a significant role in the pil- grimage culture of the cathedral. I will also explore how the lack of a clear central narrative about the saint leaves a vacancy that will be filled with various other narratives.     Stephen Sykes and the ‘Crisis’ of Anglican Ecclesiology and Identity

    Unashamed integrity: Stephen Sykes and the ‘crisis’ of Anglican ecclesiology and identity Jeremy Morris Stephen Sykes’s Integrity of Anglicanism was published in 1978, and had a convulsive effect on discussions of Anglican identity and ecclesiology. In prose that was spare and sometimes biting, it laid into a common Anglican apologetic style that had trumpeted the virtue of Anglican ‘comprehensiveness’ and had claimed a unique ecumenical advantage for the Anglican churches as a ‘bridge’ between Protestantism and Catholicism. Much of this traditional Anglican apologetic Sykes found muddled and complacent, and he appealed to Anglicans to take systematic theology seriously, and to attempt to articulate exactly what was distinctive about Anglican doctrine, and especially the Anglican doctrine of the Church. Appearing as it did in good time for the Lambeth Conference of 1978, the Integrity of Anglicanism sharply divided opinion, both then and since.1 This article is an attempt to re-read the book, and through it to re-evaluate Sykes’s view of Anglican identity. To do that it is necessary to broaden the analysis to encompass the whole context of Sykes’s life and work, including both his earlier work on Schleiermacher, and his later years writing as a bishop and as chairman of the Doctrine Commission. What emerges from this re-reading is an assessment of Anglicanism, I would argue, marked by four main emphases: first, an attempt to clarify the method and content of the ‘essence of Christianity’, with its 1 Sykes’s own diary of the 1978 Lambeth Conference at several points attests to the controversy the book caused; for example, of his first meeting with the other theological consultants, on the first day, he wrote: ‘Various remarks were made to me about my book.

While looking at various narratives – predominantly about saints in historical and contemporary contexts – attached to these cathedrals, I also aim to offer some glimpses into how people interact with and relate to space. I argue that beliefs and narratives about saints play a significant role in the pil- grimage culture of the cathedral. I will also explore how the lack of a clear central narrative about the saint leaves a vacancy that will be filled with various other narratives.     'Setting Forth the Name of Jesu Unto Other': an Anglican Theology of Evangelism?

Andy Griffiths examines some of the very different understandings of evangelism present in the Anglican communion today. He considers different possible ways of constructing an Anglican theology of evangelism: by reference to current opinion; past Anglican writers; the Prayer Book and Articles. He concludes that a spirit of 'generous orthodoxy' should allow for different understandings. Yet there should also be limits set, to avoid approaches which would compromise the imperative of bringing unbelievers to faith in Christ. 'We must preach the word of God truly and purely, and set forth the name of Jesu unto other.' 1 This is not an article about how to evangelize. It does not even set out to create a theological approach to evangelism. Rather, it seeks to examine a contemporary Anglican controversy about theologies of evangelism. We will see that this argument, like many others, has at its heart the issue of whether almost unlimited diversity is coherent or indeed healthy in contemporary Anglicanism. I go on to outline four ways in which we might proceed ·to answer the question of what an 'Anglican theology of evangelism' might look like. I will suggest that we might proceed by canvassing present opinion, by gathering testimonies from leading Anglicans through the ages, by returning to the foundation documents, or by a more complex process that attempts to be true to Scripture and creeds, formularies and context. Advocating the last of these methods, I will return to the contemporary controversy with which I started and attempt to draw some lessons.
