World War II. – “The Blitz“ This information report describes the events of “The Blitz” during the Second World War in London. The attacks between 7th September 1940 and 10 th May 1941 are known as “The Blitz”. The report is based upon information from http://www.secondworldwar.co.uk/ , http://www.worldwar2database.com/ and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Blitz . Prelude to the War in London The Second World War started on 1 st September 1939 with the German attack on Poland. The War in London began nearly one year later. On 24 th August 1940 the German Air Force flew an attack against Thames Haven, whereby some German bombers dropped bombs on London. At this time London was not officially a target of the German Air Force. As a return, the Royal Air Force attacked Berlin. On 5th September 1940 Hitler ordered his troops to attack London by day and by night. It was the beginning of the Second World War in London. Attack on Thames Haven in 1940 The Attacks First phase The first phase of the Second World War in London was from early September 1940 to mid November 1940. In this first phase of the Second World War Hitler achieved great military success. Hitler planned to destroy the Royal Air Force to achieve his goal of British invasion. His instruction of a sustainable bombing of London and other major cities like Birmingham and Manchester began towards the end of the Battle of Britain, which the British won. Hitler ordered the German Air Force to switch their attention from the Royal Air Force to urban centres of industrial and political significance. -

Tamiya’s Fairey Swordfish by Dick Smith When the British entered World War II, their main torpedo bomber was a slow, obsolete bi-plane that had made its maiden flight nearly ten years earlier. With its fixed landing gear and lumbering appearance, the Fairey Swordfish had a top speed of only 220 miles per hour. But on the night of November 20, 1940, that speed was enough to take twelve Swordfish from the deck of the British aircraft carrier Illustrious to the harbor of Taranto where the men of the Italian fleet slept. At eleven o’clock, under a moonlit sky, twelve Swordfish attacked and sunk or severely damaged six Italian battleships along with several other vessels in the fleet. A second wave of Swordfish, an hour later, put the final touches on one of the most famous British victories in World War II. Tamiya’s 1/48th scale Swordfish Mk.1 was released in 1999 and was one of the company’s new line of “super kits.” The model features a complete interior, which leaves almost nothing for the aftermarket resin suppliers to produce. Construction starts with the jam-packed cockpit. First on the list is the pilot’s position. The floor and the accompanying bracing are painted with Model Master RAF Interior Green. The scuff plates in front of the rudder pedals are flat aluminum. The rudder pedals, seat adjustment lever are picked out in flat aluminum and flat black. The seat is RAF Interior Green with Model Master “leather” for the seat back. I made seat belts from strips of typing paper and used buckles from an IPMS photo-etched brass set. -

In June 1910, the S38, an aircra very similar to the S27 on display, achieved the record for the highest flight. It flew at 1180 feet: not very high by today’s standards but breath-taking then. The S27 was the first aeroplane to fly from a moving ship and it won an endurance record in 1912 when it flew 4 hours non-stop. RECORD BREAKER This biplane was the first type of aircra to land on a moving ship. Tragically, its record breaking pilot crashed and died the third me he aempted this dangerous manoeuvre. At a young age he had already showed interest in Zoology. He wrote his first publication –about a new caddisfly species– at the age of 20. As Botosaneanu himself wanted to remark, the prominent Romanian zoologist and man of culture Constantin Motaş had great influence on him. A small portrait of Motaş was one of the few objects adorning his ascetic office in the Amsterdam Museum. Later on, the geneticist and evolutionary biologist Theodosius Dobzhansky and the evolutionary biologist Ernst Mayr greatly influenced his thinking. In 1956, he was appoint- ed as a senior researcher at the Institute of Speleology belonging to the Rumanian Academy of Sciences. Lazare Botosaneanu began his career as an entomologist, and in particular he studied Trichoptera. Until the end of his life he would remain studying this group of insects and most of his publications are dedicated to the Trichoptera and their environment. His colleague and friend Prof. Mar- cos Gonzalez, of University of Santiago de Compostella (Spain) recently described his contribution to Entomolo- gy in an obituary published in the Trichoptera newsletter2 Lazare Botosaneanu’s first contribution to the study of Subterranean Biology took place in 1954, when he co-authored with the Romanian carcinologist Adriana Damian-Georgescu a paper on animals discovered in the drinking water conduits of the city of Bucharest. -

Taranto, Taranto, Italy; cDipartimento di Biologia Animale ed Ambientale, Università di Bari, Bari, Italy (Received 17 May 2009; final version received 14 December 2009) Thirty-eight nonindigenous marine species (NIS) (macroalgae, sponges, hydrozoans, molluscs, polychaetes, crustaceans, ascidiaceans and fish), are reported from the Apulian coast of Italy. Shipping, aquaculture and migration through the Suez Canal are the main pathways of introduction of the NIS. In Apulian waters, 21% of NIS are occasional, 18% are invasive and 61% are well-established. It is highly probable that more NIS will arrive from warm-water regions, because Mediterranean waters are warming. Furthermore, some of the successful NIS must have the ability to become dormant in order to survive adverse conditions, either seasonal or during long journeys in ballast waters. The identification of NIS depends greatly on the available taxonomic expertise; hence the paucity of taxonomists hinders our knowl- edge of NIS in our seas. We propose the creation and maintenance of a network of observatories across the Mediterranean to monitor the changes that take place along its coasts. Seeschlachten im Atlantik (Zusammenfassung) U-Boot-Krieg (aus Wikipedia) 07_48/U 995 vom Typ VII C/41, der meistgebauten U-Boot-Klasse im Zweiten Weltkrieg Als U-Boot-Krieg (auch "Unterseebootkrieg") werden Kampfhandlungen zur See bezeichnet, bei denen U-Boote eingesetzt werden, um feindliche Kriegs- und Frachtschiffe zu versenken. Die Bezeichnung "uneingeschränkter U-Boot-Krieg" wird verwendet, wenn Schiffe ohne vorherige Warnung angegriffen werden. Der Einsatz von U-Booten wandelte sich im Laufe der Zeit vom taktischen Blockadebrecher zum strategischen Blockademittel im Rahmen eines Handelskrieges. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg änderte sich die grundsätzliche Einsatzdoktrin durch die Entwicklung von Raketen tragenden Atom- U-Booten, die als Träger von Kernwaffen eine permanente Bedrohung über den maritimen Bereich hinaus darstellen. Im Gegensatz zum Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg fand hier keine völkerrechtliche Weiterentwicklung zum Einsatz von U-Booten statt. Der Begriff wird besonders auf den Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg bezogen. Hierbei sind auch völkerrechtliche Rahmenbedingungen von Bedeutung. Anfänge Während des Amerikanischen Bürgerkrieges wurden 1864 mehrere handgetriebene U-Boote gebaut. Am 17. Februar 1864 versenkte die C.S.S. H. L. Hunley durch eine Sprengladung das Kriegsschiff USS Housatonic der Nordstaaten. Es gab 5 Tote auf dem versenkten Schiff. Die Hunley gilt somit als erstes U-Boot der Welt, das ein anderes Schiff zerstört hat. Das U-Boot wurde allerdings bei dem Angriff auf die Housatonic durch die Detonation schwer beschädigt und sank, wobei auch seine achtköpfige Besatzung getötet wurde. Auftrag der Hunley war die Brechung der Blockade des Südstaatenhafens Charleston durch die Nordstaaten. Erster Weltkrieg Die technische Entwicklung der U-Boote bis zum Beginn des Ersten Weltkrieges beschreibt ein Boot, das durch Dampf-, Benzin-, Diesel- oder Petroleummaschinen über Wasser und durch batteriegetriebene Elektromotoren unter Wasser angetrieben wurde. -

2nd INFANTRY REGIMENT 1110 pages (approximate) Boxes 1243-1244 The 2nd Infantry Regiment was a component part of the 5th Infantry Division. This Division was activated in 1939 but did not enter combat until it landed on Utah Beach, Normandy, three days after D-Day. For the remainder of the war in Europe the Division participated in numerous operations and engagements of the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace and Central Europe campaigns. The records of the 2nd Infantry Regiment consist mostly of after action reports and journals which provide detailed accounts of the operations of the Regiment from July 1944 to May 1945. The records also contain correspondence on the early history of the Regiment prior to World War II and to its training activities in the United States prior to entering combat. Of particular importance is a file on the work of the Regiment while serving on occupation duty in Iceland in 1942.
