BETTER….FASTER…… FURTHER….BRAVER….. Fleet Air Arm Record Breakers & Medal Winners Quiz The Fleet Air Arm has achieved many technological firsts and broken many records in a century of Naval Aviation. The bravery of Fleet Air Arm aircrews has won them many medals, including four Victoria Crosses. Complete this trail to find out about the record breakers and Victoria Crosses on display in the Museum. Recordbreakersmarch2013Ed1 ©FleetAirArmMuseum2013 Hall 1 RECORD BREAKER Early aircra made by the Short brothers were great record breakers. In June 1910, the S38, an aircra very similar to the S27 on display, achieved the record for the highest flight. It flew at 1180 feet: not very high by today’s standards but breath-taking then. The S27 was the first aeroplane to fly from a moving ship and it won an endurance record in 1912 when it flew 4 hours non-stop. RECORD BREAKER This biplane was the first type of aircra to land on a moving ship. Tragically, its record breaking pilot crashed and died the third me he aempted this dangerous manoeuvre. The record breaking flight of 249.1MpH (400.8 KpH) took place not far from this Museum, in 1986. Only recently have other helicopters begun to challenge this outstanding achievement. MEDAL WINNER Look for the display near the Short 184 This WW1 fearless fighter pilot won his Victoria Cross when he single-handedly destroyed a German Zeppelin returning from The Victoria Cross its mission to bomb English cies. He died 10 days later when the wing of his aircra collapsed and he fell to his death. Complete the pilot’s surname: WarnEFORD He was also awarded France’s highest honour for bravery. Name this medal: MEDAL WINNER Look for the medal case at the tail end of the Wessex helicopter. Squadron Commander Bell Davies was award- ed the Victoria Cross for the first combat search and rescue by an aircra. He rescued a fellow pilot whilst under fire and carried him to safety in his one seater-plane. Find Bell Davies’s medals. This incredible bi-plane, made largely of fabric and aluminium, helped to sink Hit- ler’s largest baleship, Bismarck, in 1941. Nicknamed the Stringbag it was also used to disable Mussolini’s fleet in a daring night-me raid on Taranto harbour in southern Italy in 1941. Name this bi-plane: FAIREY SWORDFISH MEDAL WINNER - FACT FILE Find the Victoria Cross upstairs near the Swordfish. Lt Cdr Eugene Esmonde showed extraordinary courage when he took on the might of Hitler’s Luwaffe leading six Swordfish in an aack on three of Hitler’s great baleships. He died in the aempt and was awarded the VC posthumously. RECORD BREAKER Midway down Hall 2 This plane was the first American fighter to fly over 400mph and was one of the most feared planes of WW2. This is the only one in the world with the original colours and markings sll visible. This plane is called: MOST FAMOUS Far end of Hall 2 CHANCE-VOUGHT CORSAIR This plane is the Royal Navy’s version of the world renowned Spiire. Its wings fold up to make room on board and an arrestor hook has been added for deck landings. On 11 May 1969 a Royal Navy Phantom set a new world air speed record between New York and London in 4 hours and 46 minutes. What happened to the tyre when the Phantom screeched to a halt? THE TYRE BURST DOUBLE RECORD BREAKER—FACT FILE The Vampire was the first jet powered aircra to land on a ship’s deck. The Royal Navy pilot, Captain Eric Brown, holds the world record for the most types of aircra flown by one man — 487! Was it the first: Space flight? Controlled powered flight? Holiday flight? Lighter than air flight? Supersonic flight? RECORD BREAKER This Fairey Delta was the first plane to fly at over 1000mph. In 1956 it broke this air speed record by flying at 1132mph along the south coast of England, Name the Royal Navy Pilot who achieved this record: PETER TWISS RECORD BREAKER The prototype of the Worlds First Supersonic Passenger Plane is on display in the Museum. It could fly from New York to London in under 3 hours! Ordinary jets can only fly as far as Barcelona in Spain, or Venice in Italy in the same me! Name this very special aircra: CONCORDE BRITISH TECHNOLOGY FIRSTS On the ski ramp This aircra can take off without a run- way!! It can turn its engine outlets to li it vercally into the air and land. It was the First plane to use VTOL (Vercal Take Off and Landing). Can you find it’s name? SEA HARRIER BRITISH TECHNOLOGY FIRSTS - FACT FILE Look at the aircra suspended from the ceiling. The Space Shule broke many records and achieved many amazing technological feats, including using an airliner to get airborne, but here in Britain we did it first!
