Museums take up a key role in the cultural scene in Austria: Being institutions which are conserving the Austrian cultural, artistic and natural heritage in their collections, they bear great responsibility. Each individual object must be recorded, handled and preserved. Not all of the objects can be displayed in exhibitions, though. They are being stored in archives, where they are available to researchers. From those extensive collections, curators compile exhibitions which allow for views into distant times and places in order to help gain a new perspective on our present and on options for the future. Museums are places for encounters and discourse, where visitors are being presented with a new scope of ideas. In museums, people can discuss and reflect, get into conversation with each other and actively commit themselves to a better understanding of each other. The “ORF Long Night of Museums” of- fers you the unique opportunity to visit not only one museum but many. Make use of this special occasion and learn about the history and stories of times past and of distant worlds in the Austrian museums. We are looking forward to welcoming you!

Registered Austrian museums manage a collection of objects, document them in an inventory, and offer regular opening hours (www.museen-in-oesterreich.at). Besuchen Sie das ORF-Zentrum im Rahmen einer Klassikführung und erleben Sie Fernsehen hautnah!

The Viennese bakers’ guild was first mentioned in records from 1227. Since 1895, the property in Florianigasse 13 has been in the possession of the guild. An additional building in the style of the German Renaissance was added to the courtyard in 1898 to be used for administration, training and further education. Since 2000, the guild house has been the centre of the Viennese catering trades (bakers, butchers, confectioners and other food trades). During the “ORF Long Night of Museums”, the banquet hall will be open to the general public. Short films will give an insight into historical details of the catering trades. 37 The Future of Memory – Museum Simon Wiesenthal Rabensteig 3 1010 Vienna museum.vwi.ac.at 01 / 890 15 14-16 Simon Wiesenthal (1908–2005) dedicated his life after the Holo- caust to the uncovering and the criminal prosecution of the crimes of National Socialism. His motives were as clear as the task was complex: justice for the victims and a warning for coming genera- tions. Simon Wiesenthal’s thought and work are the foundations of the Vienna Wiesenthal Institute for Holocaust Studies (VWI). The three early modern vaults on the ground floor of the institute building, which have housed the Simon Wiesenthal Museum since January 2017, are thus foundations in a dual sense. The core of this little museum is formed by biographical and personal documents as well as video extracts and archival materials from his estate. 58 Emperor Francis Joseph Hat Museum 56 Imperial & Royal Wine Treasure Vaults Piaristengasse 45 1080 Vienna www.piaristenkeller.at 01 / 406 01 93 The Emperor Francis Joseph Hat Museum is an interactive museum situated in the middle of a 300-year-old monastery wine cellar. In addition to valuable collector’s items in the showcases, the hat museum offers individual hats from the “good old times” which may be worn during the guided tour of the interactive museum. GUIDED MUSEUM TOURS jetzt In contrast to the traditional approach of museums, where visi- # tors just look at the objects, guests of the tour programme at the Emperor Francis Joseph Hat Museum and the Imperial and Royal Wine Treasure Vaults can actually ‘experience’ the active effect of history and spirit of the imperial times by putting on an original Viennese hat. By wearing those hats, visitors slip into the roles of the personali- ties of the Viennese society of the past, and are then encouraged to take an active part in old Austrian imperial court customs of the 19th century (such as hand kissing). The main emphasis of the hat museum is on hats from the time of Emperor Francis Joseph I, which was an outstanding period considering the diversity of headwear worn by the noble Viennese society and the splendid uniforms of the imperial army.

NOTE_ Take part in some wine tasting in the wine cellar during your visit and enjoy a glass of Sisi sparkling wine (€ 3,–) – a treat for the palate and the soul. Children are offered a glass of “Scout special” (€ 1,–).
