Back in my childhood, I truly believed that everything was much simpler. And if I have to give you my honest opinion as to why things were the way they were, it would be how people communicated with each other. There was always an element of touch, which is losing its essence in today’s world.

Time has moved on and so have I. Getting older can be beautiful and scary at the same time. The feeling first hit me when I lost my father. He was the kindest and most selfless person I knew, and I was devastated. My father taught me to be compassionate and hard working. He was a surgeon who spent his entire career caring for other people. He often would only charge patients for what they could afford or, if they couldn't pay, he wouldn't charge them at all. There was an aura about him from the moment you shook his hand or heard him speak that inspired your . I remember at his funeral, all the businesses and shops in the town where we were from in Turkey shut down for the procession. The residents carried his casket on their shoulders all the way from the town center to the grave site. My father showed me, by his example, what it means to leave a mark on other people.

As adults, we discuss the virtues of honesty, fairness, kindness, and compassion that we learned as kids. However how many of us really practice them in our day to day lives? When we grow older and develop into the human beings that we are today, we enter a world altogether different from the kind and liberal one that our parents taught us enter a world altogether different from the kind and liberal one that our parents taught us about- it’s one where trustworthiness is never guaranteed and truth-telling appears like a faraway ideal.

In a world that changes and moves faster and faster, we often feel like we aren’t good enough, that there is so much more we could be doing and accomplishing. We are ever striving for the ultimate in perfection that we believe others have achieved. What we fail to realize is that in the rush of becoming someone or something else and achieving the distant milestone we lose the pride in sensing who we are.

We were all born with an innate desire to share with other people. We are all social beings and connecting with other people is what makes us human. We have forgotten that the best way for us to find joy in our own lives is to bring joy into the lives of others. Sharing your thoughts and life with others is what nurtures your being. Technology and have made it easier for us to meet and connect with each other but they also have become weapons of self-destruction. We spend so much time online that we have lost touch with what truly matters. We have started to measure ourselves not by how true we are to ourselves but by how many likes and comments we get on our newsfeeds.

Hello is a social network built on loves, not likes. There is so much , agony, jealousy and hatred in the world that you could be posting the cutest moments around you or appreciating a spectacular view and the next moment you know you could be termed a fraud. Overexposure of social media and its easy accessibility has made today’s generation dependent on it and as I mentioned before, I don’t blame it because it has indirectly become a part and parcel of our existence. But when I hear about school kids getting influenced through this platform to the point that they want to end their life just because they got hooked to a challenge, it tests my faith in humanity. How can there be so much wrong in a world filled with so much potential for doing what's right?

Hope starts with us. Every single one of us has the potential to be honest, kind, fair and compassionate. I believe with all my heart that technology and social media can help us make the world a better place. I have long dreamed of a place online that is more hopeful and kind, a place without filters, a place where we feel safe to express ourselves openly and honestly, where we truly care for and support each other, where we can be genuine and intimate and raw, a place where we don't need to be afraid—a place that would make my father proud.

We're making my dream a reality at hello. Hello is a social network built on loves, not likes. Hello is a celebration of love and friendship and togetherness and all the values that make us human. It's a culmination of my life's work, but I can't do this alone. If you want to create a kinder social network, join our on hello.com. Invite your friends, and bring a neighbour and a stranger too. Together, we are stronger. Together, we can build a better world!
