Hernandez Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Sonnet Retman, Associate Professor Department of American Ethnic Studies This project begins with an analysis of racial passing narratives, and considers the ways that the genre provides a useful deconstructive tool to better understand essence-based productions of race and racial authenticity within Chicana/o assimilation narratives. Through their critical exploration of the performative aspects of race, passing novels expose the fissures within these essentialist logics and in so doing they lodge their protest against the conditions under which passing could occur. I explore the ways that writers and artists have strategically used genre, knowing that readers will approach the text with a set of expectations, only to complicate the narrative while still operating within its formal conventions. This project maps strategic manipulations of genre as the primary tool to produce racial identities or exploit preexisting notions of race and gender with the aim to Hernandez 4 resist marginalization. I focus on the political discursive practices within both genres that judge passing and assimilation at the level of the individual. Such judgments stem from in-group policing that defines group belonging on the basis of racial or ethnic authenticity, rooted in notions of folk culture. This dissertation combines multiple artistic forms including literature, visual culture and theater. I begin with an analysis of Frances E.W. Harper’s Iola Leroy (1892), which I place in dialogue with W.E.B. Du Bois’s 1900 Paris Exposition Photo Exhibition, “The American Negro,” and Currier & Ives 1870s/80s comic lithograph series, Darktown. I then shift the disciplinary vantage to Chicana/o texts including María Amparo Ruiz de Burton’s Who Would Have Thought It? (1872), El Teatro Campesino’s acto, Los Vendidos (1967), and Américo Paredes’ novel, George Washington Gómez (1990). A parodist, joker, liar, con-artist, and storyteller, the trickster fabricates believable illusions with words—and thus becomes author and embodiment of a fluid, flexible, and politically radical narrative form.” -Jeanne Rosier Smith2 Border Crossings: Passing and Other(ed) Strategic Performances of Race in African American and U.S. Chicana/o Literature begins with an analysis of racial passing narratives, and considers the ways that the genre provides a useful deconstructive tool to better understand essence-based productions of race and racial authenticity. Through their critical exploration of the performative aspects of race, passing novels expose the fissures within these essentialist logics and in so doing they lodge their protest against the conditions under which passing could occur. While the passing genre at once reveals the constructedness of race, it also demonstrates the persistent beliefs that race is product of Nature—and these expectations provide the opportunity for a successful pass. The comparison between “reading” race on the body and the operations of literary genre stem from shared practices. Both train readers to recognize and label what they see before them by providing the taxonomic hallmarks to view the object of study as stable and a product of Nature instead of ideology. Genre first trains readers to recognize familiar patterns through scripted tropes and literary devices, but it also trains readers to expect these patterns as unspoken contractual recompense between writer and reader. Pérez, Chair This dissertation investigates the development and contradictions of the discourse of mestizaje in its key Mexican ideologues and its revision by Mexican American or Chicana/o intellectuals. Great attention is given to tracing Mexico’s dominant conceptions of racial mixing, from Spanish colonization to Mexico’s post-Revolutionary period. Although mestizaje continues to be a constant point of reference in U.S. Latino/a discourse, not enough attention has been given to how this ideology has been complicit with white supremacy and the exclusion of indigenous people. Mestizofilia, the dominant mestizaje ideology formulated by white and mestizo elites after Mexico’s independence, proposed that racial mixing could be used as a way to “whiten” and homogenize the Mexican population, two characteristics deemed necessary for the creation of a strong national identity conducive to national progress. Mexican intellectuals like Vicente Riva Palacio, Andrés Molina Enríquez, José Vasconcelos and Manuel Gamio proposed the remaking of the Mexican population through state sponsored European immigration, racial mixing for indigenous people, and the implementation of public education as a way to assimilate the population into European culture.

Most deal with diachronic considerations. As for the dialect of Saintonge only a few articles are available. This whole area, which until a few generations ago contained a variety of apparently closely related patois or dialects— such as Aunisian, Saintongeais, and others in Lower Poitou— , is today for the most part devoid of them. All traces of a local speech have now’ disappeared from Aunis. And in Saintonge, patois speakers are very limited as to their number even in the most remote villages. The present study consists of three distinct and unequal phases: one pertaining to the discovering and gethering of an adequate sample of Saintongeais patois, as it is spoken today* another presenting a synchronic analysis of its most pertinent features; and, finally, one attempting to interpret the results of this analysis in the light of time and area dimensions.

    Abstract: What, how, and who is transbutch? In this thesis, I examine memoirs and personal essays that define and defy boundaries between “butch" and “transmasculine" subjectivity –– and investigate my own queer experience in the process –– in order to counter the myth of an irreparable trans/ butch divide. Deemed by some to be “border wars,” conflicts between transness and butchness are emblematic of the contested (hi)stories on which the identities are founded: namely, white supremacy, colonialism, transmedicalism, and lesbian separatism/trans-exclusionary radical fem- inism. Ensuing identity-battles –– which have increased with increased access to biomedical transition –– rely on a teleological approach to identity, and, I argue, may only be ameliorated by prioritizing experiential multiplicity and political affinity over fixed, essential truth. Through en- gagement with a variety of personal narratives by authors such as S. Typically, a tracheoscopy requires the endoscope to go through the nasal cavity and then the larynx to reach the trachea, where it can be used to administer a local anesthetic. For a typical tracheoscopy, a physician will use a liquid solution of lidocaine as the anesthetic. When this liquid solution is applied to the patient’s larynx, it causes gaging and discomfort resulting in a lengthy procedure time. A method has been developed to circumvent this time and discomfort by using vaporized anesthetic. The vapor lidocaine causes little to no gagging for the patient during theprocedure and results in a shorter procedure time. This method of delivery currently relies on doctors to not only own an endoscope already, but to have an endoscope which includes the necessary adaptor to allow the passage of the nebulized lidocaine. Furthermore, vaporizing lidocaine and delivering it through an endoscope are both very expensive procedures that are performedseparately. By developing an internally powered, portable endoscope that can vaporize and deliver lidocaine, Eagle BioTech hopes to simplify and eliminate the discomfort for trans-nasal and/or per oral vocal anatomy examination procedures. The device will shorten time of procedures while relieving patients from gagging and discomfort. Ideally the device will be sold for under $1000, making it more affordable for local and international markets.
