Blucher Rules Battle Scenario Battle of Ligny – 16 June 1815 Situation: Napoleon’s last victory, Ligny was his attempt to defeat or drive off the Prussian army of Blücher to prevent it uniting with an Anglo-Allied contingent under Wellington. The battle was fought just north of Fleurus (previously the site of two other major battles) in modern-day Belgium. It pitted 68,000 French of the Armée du Nord against Blucher’s 80,000 Prussians. Blucher met with Wellington about midday and confirmed the Prussian intention to stand at Ligny and await reinforcement. However, Wellington would be prevented from directly assisting Blucher by the French attack at Quatre Bras. Having assembled on the battlefield through the morning and early afternoon, and hearing cannon fire from Quatre Bras (providing some assurance of a secure flank) the French were ready to launch their attack by 2.30pm. Three shots fired by the Guard Artillery signalled the commencement of the French advance and the battle. Blucher Scale: Normal Momentum Dice: Players per side # 1 4 2-3 3 Army Morale: French: 11 (given their proximity, most of them are just off the map, the reinforcements have already been included) Prussian: 20 Game Clock: Set the Game Clock at 15 for the first turn. First Side: French Reinforcements: The Guard Corps is a reinforcement on the south edge of Map Section A2. The French player simply announces that it is arriving during any French turn and places and moves it in accordance with the rules on page 81. The Guard Corps has a Reinforcement move distance of 4BW rather than 2BW. 4 Cavalry Corps is a reinforcement on the south edge of Map Section B2. The French player simply announces that it is arriving during any French turn and places and moves it in accordance with the rules on page 81. 6 Corps is a reinforcement on the south edge of map section B2. It arrives on Turn 25. Optional 6 Corps reinforcement rule: On turn 19 the French CinC rolls a die for 6 Corps and conceals it under a cup (don’t use the MO cup as this die will be concealed for a number of turns). The number rolled corresponds to a turn of arrival in the table below. Before the die is rolled the French CinC may declare they are subtracting one from the die roll (things are desperate and Napoleon has ordered up 6 Corps earlier). If the French side does modify the die roll and goes on to win, they must forever after acknowledge that it was only this desperate and cheesy act that afforded them that win. For this scenario, the batteries to be allocated are: French: 7 Heavy, 11 Horse, 16 foot Prussians: 5 Heavy, 9 Horse, 12 Foot. Victory: Use the Victory and Defeat rules on page 70 in Chapter 8. All three objectives begin the game under Prussian control. Setup: The Prussians setup first. French infantry and artillery units setup no closer than 3 BW to Prussian units except that one French infantry unit can always setup within 2 BW of St Amand (3 Corps set-up area comes within 2BW at the closest point). French cavalry must setup at least 5 BW from Prussian units. 2 Some Understrength traits differ from the cards provided with The 100 Days: A Blucher Campaign. Ligny occurred after some fighting and our research also provided different strengths for a few cards. Just using the cards at face value would be fine. Other Optional Rules: French 1st Corps The French 1st Corps spent the day wandering back and forth between Quatre Bras and Ligny. That may not be entirely fair, but it did not fight at either battle. At Ligny its near-appearance caused some consternation on both sides. If players wish, they can use the following rule to simulate this. On turn 22 the Prussian player rolls a die and conceals it under a cup. The Prussian consults the table below. On the turn indicated the die roll is revealed. On that turn the Prussians must activate make a reserve move with their most north-westerly concealed unit and move it as close to the northwest corner of the board as possible. Should they be unable to do so, the French have won. On the following French turn, the French player may not make any reserve moves. South friendly to French. Ligny and Sombreffe buildings are stone. Historical Outcome: After intense fighting back and forth the French 3rd and 4th Corps wrested Ligny and St Amand from the Prussians. The fighting had drawn in virtually all of the Prussian reserves and the French Yound Guard on the left. Satisfied the Prussians had used their reserves Napoleon ordered up the Old Guard, Guard Cavalry and 4th Cavalry Corps. At about 20:00 these troops smartly cleared Ligny, and its surrounds, and erupted out of its north side. This was too much for the Prussians, some of whom broke and the rest began a retreat ordered by Gneisenau (Blucher was missing after being unhorsed, ridden over and almost captured resisting this attack). Not quite getting into action, French 6 Corps advanced to just south of Sombreffe after the battle. While the battle was lost, the Prussians retreated in relatively good order maintaining rearguards in Sombreffe, on the Namur road and just north of Bry until well into the night and early the next morning. There was no immediate French pursuit. While some 8,000 stragglers and deserters retreated towards Namur, and out of the figuring for the remainder of the campaign, the bulk of the army retreated north to Tilly. Consequently, the Prussians were in a position to intervene at Waterloo on 18 June and ensure the French lost the campaign.
