EL GOLFO, A VISTA DE PÁJARO Con apenas 268 km2 de extensión y una población de poco más de 10.000 almas, El Hierro se divide en solo tres municipios: Valverde –la capital de la isla–, El Pinar y Fron- tera. La iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, situada en este último, es cono- cida por su curioso campanario, una construcción exenta, situada sobre la montaña de Joapira, cercana al templo, y recortada contra una pared volcánica. ¶ Just 130.7 mi² (268 km²) in length and with a population of just over 10,000, El Hierro is divided into just three municipalities: Valverde (the island’s capital), El Pinar and Frontera. The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, located in Frontera, is famous for its peculiar bell tower, an independent building cut out of a volcanic rock wall on the mountain of Joapira. The Candelaria bell tower provides views of almost all of El Golfo, the massive semicircular valley that occupies the northern part of El Hierro.
